Samuel Tucker Media Studies Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Introducion Analysis IMDb: Year 1999 Tags Action, Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi Rating 6.5 / 10 Metascore 51 / 100 We begin with the 20th Century Fox and LucasFilm logos, blaring out there orchestral ensemble that is known throughout movie history. The cut to black. A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....” We see the old Star Wars classic brought back after many years to make fans remember the excitement rush back into their Star Wars fandom. The loud Star Wars Theme begins to play as “Star Wars” in it’s original font is pasted across the screen , once again to reminisce and also capture new viewers. All of this is on a black background with stars all over making us know immediately that it is a scifi film. The title begins to shrink back into the centre of the screen and “Episode I” ][ “THE PHANTOM MENACE” appear, whilst scrolling back, soon followed by the backstory of this episode. All constantly scrolling slowly into the stars in the centre of the screen as the beautifully remastered music continues to play. The 3 paragraphs of backstory end in “...” as the film begins, the camera drifts down into the stars to reveal a ship flying towards a large group of space stations above a planet. We are cut to inside of the ship and the mysterious character asking the captain to contact the station that they are to land on. Where the alien explains that this is alright to receive the ambassadors. The ship enters the bay doors and lands where it is slowly surrounded by droids carrying weapons, meaning that this is a possibly hostile place, it cuts to a door sliding open and two hooded figures being greeted by a humanoid droid that introduces himself and shows them to a meeting room and leaves to find his masters. The figures both remove their hoods as one says they “have a bad feeling about this” as to which the other responds to keep his mind there and then. It is obvious that this is a Master and his apprentice, not only by the age difference but by the sense of wisdom or naivety and innocence in their respective voices as they speak. They then discuss that another master warned him to be mindful of the future. This could be foreshadowing for not only the rest of this film, but the entire franchise if thought about chronologically. Our assumptions are then confirmed by the words “Young Padawan” and Master” being said to one another. The two slowly stroll over to the window giving the audience a sense that nothing is going wrong and everything is currently going to be peaceful, where they continue to discuss the task at hand, Negotiations of the trade federation. Cut to the aliens talking to the Droid who introduced them, he it believes that they are “Jedi Knights” and the Aliens respond fearfully, that they are here to force peace and instead of

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Introducion Analysis  IMDb: Year 1999 Tags Action, Adventure, Fantasy, SciFi Rating 6.5 / 10 Metascore 51 / 100  We begin with the 20th Century Fox and LucasFilm logos, blaring out there orchestral ensemble that is known throughout movie history. The cut to black. “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. . . .” We see the old Star Wars classic brought back after many years to make fans remember the excitement rush back into their Star Wars fandom. The 3 paragraphs of backstory end in “. . .” as the film begins, the camera drifts down into the stars to reveal a ship flying towards a large group of space stations above a planet. Our assumptions are then confirmed by the words “Young Padawan” and “Master” being said to one another. The two slowly stroll over to the window giving the audience a sense that nothing is going wrong and everything is currently going to be peaceful, where they continue to discuss the task at hand, Negotiations of the trade federation. Cut to the aliens talking to the Droid who introduced them, he it believes that they are “Jedi Knights” and the Aliens respond fearfully, that they are here to force peace and instead of

meeting with them, choses to contact Lord Sidious. They decide to send the Droid with refreshments which the Jedi kindly accept as they continue to discuss why they are waiting. A man who seems to obviously be the overseer of this operation, “Lord Sidious” decides that he needs to have them killed. Cut to the ship, that is now being targeted by droids and destroyed in a fantastic explosion, there seem to be no survivors. As the explosion occurs the Jedi sense it and pull their weapons as gas begins to fill the room. They lower their lightsabers and take a deep breath each. End of 5 Minute into  In this introduction we see who the enemies are, who the main, good characters are and the general vibe of the entire film. It is a very interesting introduction as there is then, no form of credits to separate the into from the rest of the film.

This is an important part of any film. The Studio credits. This film specifically has two different studios, 20th Century Fox and LucasFilm.  They are important as they show either who made, produced or funded the film. We only have the music and sound effects of the studio credits. This, in this case, is 20th Century Fox’s orchestral theme that is played continuously over the top of both credits.

This is an important part of the Star Wars franchise as it is a unique introduction that can be identified by anyone in this day or age. It tells the unique backstory of the current episode and ends where the movie begins almost to tempt the audience into the fim. We have here the main theme (nondiegetic) as the opening text rolls over the screen

This is an important establishing shot as we can immediately tell that we’re on a ship, in space about to land on a planet or on a space station. It also gives us that immediate SciFi feeling. It is so obvious it is sci fi that it could remove the planet in the background and still be. There are two different sounds playing here, firstly the sound of the ship (diegetic) and the opening theme music that is slowly dying down (nondiegetic)

Page 3: MediaStudies: "Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace" Deconstruction

This wide shot that incorporates the entire landing area shows where the ship lands and that it is then surrounded by droids, which act in the same way as general employees or at a stretch henchmen. However, it is made very clear that they are armed and ready to attack if given the order, this makes the audience a tad more confused as this is supposed to be a peaceful place and they were ready to receive the ambassadors. The sound in this scene is very echoey, The ship landing, causing a constant loud hum along with the busy crown sound of all the droids clanking around the bay, at this point there is a very quiet, tense music playing.

This is the first mid shot in which we see the main characters remove their hoods and let us see their faces. No one would know who these two are unless a deep fan remembers the name “Obi Wan” which is only briefly mentioned in the original trilogy. We get a first hand look at these two from a 180 degree angle as the camera pans with them walking across the room. Sound in this scene revolves around dialogue of these two characters talking, the soft footsteps of their leather boots padding across the clean floor as they walk and low music for effect.

This mid shot of the two staring down onto the droid is a tad more comedic, which shows the lightened, family friendly part of Star Wars as the droid is the one sent into the room with the Jedi and looks helplessly back and forth at each of the aliens in fear, this could be strange because in normal Sci Fi, robots aren’t meant to have emotion, but in this, they do. This is what makes it different from other Sci Fi films, there are other films about bots having emotion EG (Real Steel and Chappie) but this is different, and original. Seminal perhaps. The sound here is comprised of dialogue, both in the foreground (that is important) and the crowd in the background that are constantly communication. All matched with low music that is starting to build

Conclusion  My conclusion to this is that they try to move straight into the film after the iconic opening credits, I believe that they do this effectively because immediately the audience is shown where they are, the theme of the film and what exactly is happening. Part of this is due to the backstory in the introduction, however it is also due to the fact that they have strong characters who are immediately and easily recognised as the protagonists in this film. The sound is made to a very detailed mark, they have the humming of the ship as it lands to the echos of the droids as their metal feet march over the hard floors. The Music (nondiegetic) is used throughout to build tension at certain scenes and used effectively when different emotions (EG Speeds up at the sign of action, slows down at sadness and becomes louder during tension) The camera work is very well executed as we are constantly reminded who is talking as they are almost always in the shot, either close up, mid or over the shoulder. If noone is talking they make a point of the tension or body language between characters such as arm crossing and tilting the character’s head to give a more serious look. My favourite parts about this intro is that it is extremely iconic and uses only music and text to convey the story before we, as an audience, are put straight into the action. There is barely any lines before we meet the protagonists and find out what their intentions are. I enjoy the mysteriousness of it all and hope to be able to incorporate this into my production.
