CSP Engineering (B) builds new PAR-Duo machine at parquet producer HaboPAR-Duo: the solution for the production of two-layer parquet on a medium-sized scale

Over the past decade, CSP Engineering from Dessel, Belgium, has been working on the develop-ment of computerised solutions and machines tailored to smaller and medium-sized producers in the parquet industry. The most recent innovation in the CSP machine range is the PAR-Duo. This unique machine ensures efficient and intelligent production of two-layer parquet on a ply-wood base. Over the past few months, parquet producer Habo in Genk (B) has started using the PAR-Duo machine and both supplier and client are delighted with the results.

Two-layerJan Peeters, general manager of CSP Engineering comments, “The rapidly grow-ing demand for semi-solid parquet means that several smaller and medium-sized parquet producers need efficient ma-chines to produce this type of parquet. We knew what we had to do and we set out to develop a machine which glues solid wood top layers onto plywood bases with a pro-duction capacity of up to 250,000 square metres per annum. This capacity is enough for the major part of the market.”

Efficient use of raw materialJan Peeters explains that efficiency and flexibility were the priorities in the devel-opment of the PAR-Duo: “We wanted a machine which could handle plywood bas-es from various manufacturers in a flex-ible manner and at the same time use the plywood plates as efficiently as possible. This would mean as little waste as possi-ble of raw materials. At the same time, we also had to take into account the variable lengths of the supplied noble wood for the top layer.”

Intelligent machineJan Peeters continues: “That’s why we’ve developed the PAR-Duo, an intelligent ma-chine which retains the exact dimensions when the solid wood top layer is fed. It then adapts the plywood plank processing as required. This keeps production costs down to a minimum. A work buffer of ply-wood plates is available at the PAR-Duo to feed it into the machine automatically.”

Edge glueing of plywoodThe glueing follows once the plywood bases are fed-in and adapted to the avail-able top layer. The planks are fed so that they fit in perfectly and are directed via a conveyor belt to the glueing unit. At that point, a PU hot-melt glueing system en-sures durable adhesion between the ply-wood bases and the solid wood top layer. Cold glueing is also possible, if required. The PAR-Duo provides edge-glueing of the plywood bases, integrated into the feeding system. This ensures a minimum quantity of waste and very strong adhe-sion. After the glueing of top layer onto the plywood, the boards are pressed

intensively into a 6-metre long aggregate developed for that purpose. In the end phase, the PAR-Duo again shows its inge-nuity. Indeed, the machine has a perfect knowledge of the various dimensions of the top layers in progress. By means of the integrated cross-cut saw, the boards are perfectly separated at the edges of the original top-layers. The boards can be stacked or one can provide a carrier or a roller conveyor to fill the knots in the boards in line.The entire process takes place at a tidy and adjustable variable speed. Three oper-ators are enough to use the machine: one at the plywood base feed, one at the top layer feed, and one at the end phase to remove the boards. The boards then only need to be taken to the planing machine for the final touching up.

Parquet producer HaboLast year, the PAR-Duo was installed at various parquet producers in Belgium, Netherlands, and France. In the spring of 2011, it was the turn of Habo in Genk. It is no coincidence that the machine

ended up there, as Jan Peeters explains. He says, “Habo and CSP Engineering have enjoyed an excellent working partnership for many years. It was here, too, that the first preliminary model of the PAR-Scan scanner was once installed, a model entirely tai-lor made to the needs of Habo. We’ve maintained relations ever since and CSP Engineering is one of the preferred suppliers of machines for parquet production. Amongst other things, Habo also uses one of our stacking machines.” Stefaan Luykx from Habo expressed complete satisfaction with the CSP Engineering machines. He says, “The CSP approach is based on dialogue and flexibility and this, together with the ex-cellent machines from CSP, ensures excellent relations between our companies.” They have also been delighted with the PAR-Duo, which has more than met their expectations. Stefaan Luykx explains: “Due to the growing need for semi-solid parquet on the market, we decided to invest in this machine. We regard the PAR-Duo as the ideal so-lution due to its quality, capacity, and efficiency. The concept of glueing in a continuous production flow makes full use of both the top layer and the plywood base!”

Flexibility and precisionStefaan Luykx continues: “What we also appreciate is the flex-ibility of the machines. The PAR-Duo can cope perfectly with

different thicknesses of both the plywood base and the top layer. Here, we produce two types of semi-solid parquet: a variant with a top layer of 6mm on a plywood base of 12mm and a variant with a top layer of 4mm on a plywood base of 9mm. When we discussed about the installation and configuration, we chose to eliminate possible thickness tolerances of the plywood base by calibrating the plywood strips in line. CSP Engineering has inte-grated our sander with the PAR-Duo so that no extra workers are needed for this operation. If you don’t calibrate the plywood, you run the risk that, with a thicker plywood bottom layer, the solid wood top layer is becoming too thin after planing. This ensures that we can always offer a top quality product with the stated top layer thickness, so that we can further enhance our reputation for quality products.”

Project De WaegeneerEDat er over smaak niet kan gediscussieerd worden… daarover kan je stevig discussiëren. Eén ding staat vast: binnen het smaakspectrum bevindt zich een bepaald cultuurdomein dat we kortweg maar veelzeggend ‘de goede smaak’ kunnen noemen enne… daarover valt niet te discussiëren. En waar dat domein zich nu precies bevindt of hoe het er volgens de regels van de kunst moet uitzien… tja, dat weet niemand. Feit is: van zodra je de wereld van ‘de goede smaak’ betreedt, weet je ook meteen dat je er bent en toen we dit huis in Wilrijk binnengingen, wisten we het dan ook meteen…

Je bent jong en… Het doet deugd om nog jonge mensen te ontmoeten die de schoonheid van een oud en charmant huis weten te waarderen en die ook bereid zijn de nodige inspanningen te leveren om het verleden mee te nemen in hun toekomst. We bevinden ons in dat betere stukje van antwerpen waar sommige lanen bezaaid liggen met superbe villa’s en dito domeinen terwijl andere lanen een aaneenschakeling vor-men van prachtige herenhuizen. Wij bezoeken alvast één van die mooie, oude herenhuizen. tot enkele jaren terug was dit mooie pand onderverdeeld in 4 kleine appartement-jes die mettertijd het beste van zichzelf hadden gegeven aan frequent wisselende huurders. “Het gebouw was volledig doorleefd”, weet Jim, die met zijn echtgenote en zijn twee kinderen, nicolas en elise, goed een jaar geleden de volledig gerestaureerde woning betrok. Jim heeft weliswaar een veel-eisende job maar… thuis is thuis. “Hij brengt zijn werk nooit mee naar huis”, luidt het, en van zulke mensen weten we dat ze aan hun habitat erg hoge eisen stellen. mama zorgt voor de kindjes en dat doet ze met volle teugen. Zij is er zich terdege van bewust dat de tijd niet stil staat en dat ieder mo-ment met de jonge spruiten moet gekoesterd worden. en laat ons eerlijk wezen… voor onze fotograaf michel mocht het speelgoed wel even aan de kant gezet worden “maar normaal ligt het er hier wel anders bij”, geeft de moeder des huizes grootmoedig toe. De speelkamer op de verdieping, hoe ruim en gezellig ook, wordt inderdaad niet al te vaak gebruikt.

Oud en nieuwOp sommige plaatsen op het gelijkvloers kon je eertijds de zolder zien. Het zegt veel. Het huis in Wilrijk was volledig opgebruikt en aan een ‘tweede leven’ toe. Hier werd de cul-tuur van ‘de goede smaak’ in velerlei betekenissen tot leven gewekt. We vinden een sublieme combinatie van restauratie en nieuwbouw, een zeldzaam huwelijk dat in perfecte har-monie verloopt zonder dissonanten. Datgene wat ‘waarde-vol’ was werd bewaard, de rest werd nieuwbouw. De voorzijde van het gebouw ademt de sfeer van het oude herenhuis uit: de schitterende plafonds met handgetrokken mouluren en rozassen bleven uiteraard bewaard… een fraai stukje van stukadoorskunst. Ook de oude binnendeuren en de prachtige antieke schouwen kregen in het nieuwe leven van de woning een tweede kans. De achterzijde van het pand is kompleet nieuw. Die indeling in oud en nieuw is merkbaar op alle verdiepingen. Op het gelijkvloers gaan de ‘bewaarde plaatsen’ van vroeger over in een nieuwbouw-gedeelte waar de eettafel staat en waar de keuken werd gebouwd. De keuken is ‘open’ en hedendaags. De overgang van de antieke plaatsen naar de nieuwbouw is bevreemdend geslaagd. terwijl de open en strakke keuken eerder mo-dernistisch zou moeten lijken slaagt zij erin om verleidelijk te knipogen naar het verleden van de woning. Het volledig wit-gevlamd-marmeren aanrecht en de witte marmer tegen de muur doen wat denken aan de wastafels uit grootmoeders tijd. Je moet er maar opkomen. De mooie antieke ramen aan de voorzijde kunnen zich perfect verzoenen met de moderne glaspartij die uitgeeft op de tuin: hoog, licht en luchtig.
