AS Media Evaluation- Preliminary Task

My media product uses, challenges and developed forms and conventions of real media products in several ways. The use of a logo in my magazine provides an iconic symbol in which the audience can relate to whenever they see it. This is similar to the “MTV” logo which makes the “MTV” magazine easily recognisable to it audience. The masthead of the magazine is bold and stands out on the front cover. This immediately draws you to the magazine and may entice an audience. A Large image is in the centre of the page that represents the main issue of the magazine. This technique is employed by the majority of magazines to intrigue their own target audience.

My media product caters for a variety of social groups. The use of font is an important factor here. A slim, italic font brings connotations of moving at speed; therefore I used this to portray the sports headline on the front cover. Another use of font is a typewriter effect to represent intelligence when referring to UCAS. The use of competitions that are boldly advertised on the paper may attract a wide audience in the hope that they may win something. I also used colloquial language such as “exams” so the target audience is able to read comfortably.

My media product would be distributed over three institutions. Firstly, I would upload the magazine to the internet where college students can subscribe and access it on the college website. This makes it very accessible and easy to view. Secondly, I would offer the magazine in local retail shops such as WH Smith’s so students are able to purchase the magazine even outside college. Finally, the magazine would be distributed in the college shop, giving students the opportunity to receive a hard copy of the magazine very easily.

My target audience for the magazine was students from the college. The issues concern them and therefore all the techniques used were employed to cater for them.

I addressed my audience by including issues that concern them, and that they can relate too. For example during this period of examinations my main point of sale was advice for these. I also was able to directly address the audience as the information is personal to them, as it is centred on college activities, e.g.

sport events. I was able to attract my audience by the use of bold texts and eye catching images as stated previously. Also the use of competitions creates a sense that there is something to be gained out of reading the magazine.

The platform I choose to use for my media product was Microsoft Publisher. This was useful as it provides many templates in which to construct my magazine around. I was also able to incorporate images from the internet directly into my magazine which was very useful. In the production of my media product I have learnt that technology is of high importance as it allows you to distribute on a large scale and saves a huge amount of time.
