Media language Creating meaning for the audience

Mise en sceneMise en scene is an expression used to describe the design aspects of a film production, essentially it means "visual theme" through storyboarding, cinematography and stage design, and in poetically artful ways through direction. It is also commonly used to refer to multiple single scenes within the film to represent the film. In our documentary we will use mise en scene in many ways. For example, using correct lighting in interviews to make the setting seem realistic and to create verisimilitude. We will use correct costume such as a PE teacher wearing sports clothing and any background footage of the sports will include students wearing correct uniform in certain settings. It would seem unrealistic if we filmed sports background footage in a super market. When filming our vox pops we will shoot this inside a shopping centre outside a sports shop, this will mean that the setting is related to the topic and we can reach a larger group of people than if we interviewed sports people in other settings. It also means we will be able to get a huge response from different individuals so it will be a representative view on the topic. Everything inside the footage will be relevant to the script and direction that the documentary is to be portrayed. Interviews with boxing coaches will be set in boxing rings and dance teachers in dance studios. This will increase realism, as well as make the professionals look trustworthy in their own environments. Also any props, make up, design and acting will be relevant to the theme of teenagers in sport. This means we will include teenagers, parents and experts, this is because they are our target audience and the documentary will therefore apply to them as well as look professional.

Shot typesIn our documentary we will use different shot types in order to create a realistic, effective and professional documentary that will appeal to our primary and secondary target audiences. In interviews we will use a standard mid shot in order to visually see their expression as well as making it seem like a real life interview. The audience will believe that they are talking to someone next to the camera because of eye direction. As well as this we will use a second camera to film a side angle, this will act as a cut in shot, making it easier and more interesting when it comes to editing. We will cut between the two shots so the audience see two sides of the expert. In vox pops we will use a medium close up/ mid shot in order to visually see expression from the subject. The subjects will be stood up and unlike the interview set up, the shots will be more informal creating a realistic atmosphere. This is because the shot is filmed in a public place linking with Mise En Scene. We will also use shot types such as close ups of sports equipment, this will be used as background footage when introducing an expert or a sport. Long shots will also be used with background footage when filming sports people playing football/rugby from a long distance. Another shot type we will use is establishing. These shots will set the scene when we introduce an expert. These shots will create meaning for the audience as they will be relevant to the topic and will create verisimilitude.
