Spokane hosts the Tri-City Americans tonight looking to buck the trend from this year’s season series, as the Ams won 7 of the first 9 matchups, including a 5-1 contest in Kennewick a week ago. Kailer Yamamoto scored the Chiefs’ only goal off an assist from Jaret Anderson-Dolan as they struggled to find holes in Tri-City goaltender Evan Sarthou (38 saves). Tri-City went 3-for-5 on the power play. Tonight is game 10 of 12 between the two clubs this season; they’ll finish with a home-and-home on March 17 and 18.

The Chiefs came away with a win in their last game against the Americans at Spokane Arena; 4-3 on February 11. Ethan McIndoe led the way offensively with 2 goals in the 2nd period to earn first star honors as Spokane went 2-for-3 on the power play.

Kailer Yamamoto leads all Chiefs in the season series versus Tri-City with 8 goals and 4 assists for 12 points in only 7 games. Keanu Yamamoto (5-5-10) and Hudson Elynuik (2-8-10) are also top contributors, as they have been all year. McIndoe has 5 scores against the Americans this year to go along with 3 assists.

Morgan Geekie has been the top scorer for Tri-City against the Chiefs with 6 goals and a series-high 10 assists for 16 points. Vladislav Lukin has punched in 7 goals and 7 assists while team captain Tyler Sandhu has added 6 goals and 7 helpers. NHL Top Prospect Michael Rasmussen, who has been out of the Americans lineup since February 1, has 6 goals (& 3 assists) against the Chiefs.

Specialty units have been instrumental in the season series and it’s easy to see why: Spokane has scored on 8-of-32 power play chances (25%) but Tri-City has converted 14-of-38 (36.8%). In the Chiefs’ two wins, they are 4-for-7 on the PP.

Spokane is clinging to an outside chance at a playoff spot as they trail Portland by 9 points and Victoria by 12 for the second and final wild card berth into the WHL Playoffs. They have earned at least a point in 5-of-7, including 4 wins, to give themselves a chance with 13 games remaining. They face both teams twice more.

The Americans are red-hot having won six in a row, with their last lost coming in the Feb. 11 game vs. Spokane. They beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-3 last night at home in their “Pink The Rink” night, led by a career night from Austyn Playfair with 4 points (2G, 2A). Nolan Yaremko added a goal and 2 assists while Kyle Olson scored twice. Dylan Coghlan recorded only one assist but was +7 on the night. Rylan Parenteau started in goal and made 36 saves on 39 shots faced.

JAD TURNING IT UP… Second-year forward Jaret Anderson-Dolan has turned up the heat in the second half of the season with 23G and 18A over his last 31 games including 13G & 11A over the last 16 and at least one goal in 9 of his last 11. He has 6 multi-goal games this season (3 hat tricks) after recording one last year. “JAD” was listed at 31st overall in ISS’s February rankings and 40th in the CSS Midterm Rankings for the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He is just the 4th Chief to reach the 30-goal mark during his 17-year-old season, joining notable names Travis Green (33; 1987-88), Ray Whitney (57; 89-90) and Pat Falloon (60; 89-90). MAKING HIS MARK… Kailer Yamamoto has been on a torrid pace during his draft year. The third-year forward has 75 points (34G, 41A) in 52 GP so far this season (4G, 7A over the last 7 GP), good for 11th on the WHL’s points list. He piled up 5G & 13A on a 9-game point streak snapped on NYE after another 9-game streak earlier this season. He has 24 multi-point games, including six 3-point games and one 4-point (1G & 3A vs SEA on 12/28). The Chiefs are 18-6-3-0 when Yamamoto scores a goal. On Feb. 13, he became the 27th player in franchise history to reach 200 career points (4th American-born) and 10th to do so in 3 or fewer season (1st American). He was named to the 2017 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Quebec and played for Team Orr, picking up 1G & 1A. Yamamoto earned WHL Player of the Week honors on Oct. 31. He has been blanked from the stat sheet just 10 times all season (once leaving early with injury). With a late birthday, he will first become eligible for the NHL Entry Draft in 2017. A Spokane native, he impressed in stints at international tournaments w/ Team USA (Five Nations, U-18, U-20 NJEC) and produced 128 points (42G, 86A) in his first 2 seasons with the Chiefs (125 GP). Multiple news outlets project Yamamoto as a potential 1st round pick, including Sportsnet’s January rankings with him at 22nd overall. KNOCK ON WOODS… Riley Woods, acquired from Regina at the trade deadline, has fit right in with his new team, with 3 goals &11 assists in 22 games with the Chiefs, including 1 goal and the shootout winner vs. Everett on Jan. 22 and 3 assists vs. Medicine Hat on Feb. 3. Woods is in his 2nd WHL season after scoring 9 goals and 5 assists as a rookie for Regina last year. ZOOM ZOOM… Rookie forward Eli Zummack has chipped in secondary scoring lately, scoring a goal in 6 of his last 16 games while adding 5 assists. The 16-year-old Kelowna product was acquired by the Chiefs last season as part of the deal that sent Adam Helewka to Red Deer. He was originally a 2nd round pick by the Rebels and was permanently called up by the Chiefs in late November. THEY’RE WATCHING… The Chiefs had five players named to the NHL Central Scouting’s Midterm Rankings in advance of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in June. Kailer Yamamoto led the way at 17th among North American skaters, while Jaret Anderson-Dolan came in a 40th and Ethan McIndoe at 141st. Jake McGrew earned a ranking with a “Limited Viewing” tag while Dawson Weatherill was 31st among North American goalies. NUIK WITH THE PUCK… Hudson Elynuik has been a catalyst for the Chiefs, with 19 points (7G, 12A) over his last 18 games as he briefly overtook Kailer Yamamoto for the team lead in assists. Elynuik has recorded 15 multi-point games, including two 4-point games (Oct. 1 & Jan. 6) and a 5-point game (Nov. 25). He has 4 multi-goal games. DOE-ING THE WORK… Ethan McIndoe has been rewarded for his hard work at the front of the net, with the second-year forward scoring a goal in 5 of his last 8 games. He has already posted career highs with 16G & 9A. NO TIME TO WAIT… Defenseman Ty Smith, the 1st overall pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft, has already found himself playing top minutes and quarterbacking the Chiefs’ power play. The Lloydminster product ranks t-14th in the WHL among rookies, one point ahead of fellow Chief Ondrej Najman, at 24 points (3G, 21A). He is t-2nd among 16-year-olds. SHAKE IT UP… On Dec. 14, the Chiefs completed a trade with the Saskatoon Blades that brought 19-year-old forward Wyatt Sloboshan and 18-year-old defenseman Nolan Reid to the Lilac City while sending overage forward Markson Bechtold and 19-year-old defenseman Evan Fiala to the Blades. Spokane also acquired a 3rd round pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft. On January 2, the Chiefs flipped Sloboshan and the 3rd round pick to Regina for wingers Rykr Cole (97) and Riley Woods (98) while shipping LW Curtis Miske (97) to Prince Albert for a 2018 4th round pick. Woods scored the OT winner vs. Kelowna in his 1st game as a Chief on Jan. 4. VETERAN ADDITION… On Dec. 27, the Chiefs added 20-year-old Alex Mowbray. The 5-foot-11 forward previously played 177 games with the Medicine Hat Tigers, including a 22-point (11G, 11A) campaign last season. This year, he was playing for the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL), where he had 20 points (10G, 10A) and 73 PIM in 32 games. MAKE THEM COUNT… Spokane has actually fared better with fewer shots as they are 13-5-4-1 when putting fewer than 30 shots on goal, but only 12-19-6-1 when they get 30+ pucks through to the opposing goaltender. They put a season-high 52 shots on goal against Seattle on Dec. 28 in a 5-4 OT win and 50 vs. Kootenay on Jan. 21 (5-2 W). SEND THE HATS FLYING… On Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, teammates Hudson Elynuik and Jaret Anderson-Dolan each recorded a hat trick. It was Spokane’s first multiple hat trick game since the 2013-14 season, when Mitch Holmberg and Dominic Zwerger each tallied 3 goals against Kamloops (Feb. 23, 2014; 9-4 W). Anderson-Dolan added his second of the year on Dec. 7 vs. VIC and third on Feb. 3 vs. M.H. LINE IN THE SAND… The Chiefs have been steadily successful when controlling things in their own end this season. They are 16-3-0-0 when allowing 2 or fewer goals against but 9-22-6-3 with allowing 3 or more.

BIG BROTHER… The older of the Yamamoto brothers, Keanu, has picked up 36 assists in 59 games including a team-leading 20 PP helpers and a 6-assist game on Nov. 25 vs. Vancouver, which tied for the 2nd-most assists in one game in franchise history. He broke a career-high 14-game point streak (8G-12A) on Dec. 27, including 4-game goal streak ending on Dec. 7. Keanu is the elder statesman on this year’s Chiefs’ squad with 258 games played (34th player in franchise history to reach 250). The Yamamoto brothers have been left off the stat sheet just six times this season, with at least one of the two recording a point in 53 of 59. BLACK & WHITE… Three Chiefs – D Ty Smith, F Koby Morrisseau and F Eli Zummack – were named by Hockey Canada to the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Ontario (Oct. 27 – Nov. 5). Smith and Zummack competed for Team Canada Black while Morrisseau is on Team White. Smith was also honored as team captain for Canada Black and tallied two goals in Black’s 4-3 win over Team USA to clinch their group. Black went on to earn silver as Smith and Zummack partnered up for their only goal in a 2-1 loss to Sweden. Morrisseau and Canada White fell in the bronze medal game to Russia. HURRICANE HUDSON… Chiefs forward Hudson Elynuik was selected in the third round (74th overall) in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. The towering centerman scored 19 goals and added 25 assists in 56 GP last season, turning heads after the turn of the calendar year with a point in 17 of 20 games starting on January 9, including a 10-game point streak. Elynuik’s father Pat was the 8th Overall pick in the 1986 draft to the Winnipeg Jets & went on to play 500+ NHL games. HEY MR. CARTER... Scott Carter was announced as the Chiefs’ new GM on Sept. 8. A Penticton, B.C. native, Carter boasts 28+ years of experience as a hockey scout, business manager and entrepreneur. He was an NHL regional scout from 1987-2015, President & GM of the Penticton Vees from 2004-2008, BCHL Executive of the Year in 2005, co-founder of the BCHHF in 1991, co-founder of the WPHL in 1994 and has been a full partner in Vaughn Custom Sports since 1996. Carter replaced long-time GM Tim Speltz, who became Director of Western Area Scouting for the Toronto Maple Leafs after 26 years at the helm of the Chiefs. NATIONAL NODS… The Spokane Chiefs had 6 players recognized with invitations to national team camps over the summer. Four players – D Ty Smith, D Matt Leduc, F Eli Zummack and F Koby Morrisseau – were invited to Hockey Canada’s U17 camp. Jaret Anderson-Dolan went to Canada’s U18 camp. Kailer Yamamoto competed at USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp, then joined Team USA at the USA Hockey CCM All-American Prospects Game in Philadelphia on Sept. 22 (he recorded 2A & a +1). BENCH BOSS… Don Nachbaur is in his 7th season as head coach having signed an extension through the 2017-18 season. The WHL veteran ranks 1st in franchise history in career wins (259) and eclipsed Mike Babcock this season for the all-time lead in career games coached for the Chiefs earlier this season (now at 480). Entering the season, his .552 winning percentage with Spokane ranked 2nd behind Hardy Sauter (.629). Nachbaur is one of four WHL coaches with 600+ career wins (690). He is also the winningest coach in Tri-City Americans history w/ 235.
