Founded in 2008 by social entrepreneurs Sean Kelly and Andy Mackensen, HUMAN (“Helping Unite Mankind And Nutrition”) Healthy Vending is America’s premier healthy foods distribution platform. Via healthy vending machines, healthy micro markets, and other innovative automated retail technologies, HUMAN delivers on its vision to “make healthy food more convenient than junk food.” The HUMAN Healthy Platform can be found in over 2000 schools, offices, hospitals, health clubs, YMCAs, and other locations in over 40 U.S. States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The “better-for-you” platform delivers a wide variety of healthy snacks, fresh produce, coffees, and locally-sourced foods. In addition to providing healthful food options, HUMAN healthy storefronts provide nutrition education via high-definition LCD screens that display streaming videos and other digital content.

HUMAN is committed to social and environmental stewardship. In January of 2013, HUMAN became the first in the vending industry to become a Certified B Corporation. Certified B Corporations meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. As a Certified B Corp, HUMAN is legally required to consider the impact of its decisions on its employees, franchisees, suppliers, community, consumers, and environment.

Additionally, HUMAN donates 10% of profits to charities that fight the causes of childhood obesity and malnutrition, with a predominate recipient of those funds being HUMAN’s non-profit arm, HUMAN Everywhere.

Inc Magazine ranked HUMAN as #168 on its “Inc 500 List of Fastest Growing Private Companies in America,” Entrepreneur Magazine ranked HUMAN as one of its “Top 100 Brilliant Companies” and Forbes Magazine ranked HUMAN as one of “America’s Most Promising Companies” twice in a row. HUMAN Healthy Vending is the only vending company to make Forbes’ list and is one of only ten companies to rank in the top 50 for the past two years.

Co-founders Sean Kelly (L) and Andy Mackensen (R)

As a biomedical engineer and social entrepreneur, Sean Kelly has always been fascinated with how things work and how they could work better, especially for the betterment of society. That’s why he co-founded HUMAN Healthy Vending with Andy Mackensen in 2008.

Sean’s entrepreneurial tenacity has landed him on coveted lists, such as Forbes’ “ America’s Most Pow-erful CEOs 40 and Under,” Forbes’ “America’s Most Promising CEOs Under 35,” Forbes’ “30 Under 30,”

“CNN Money’s Top 10 Generation Next Entrepreneurs,” Businessweek Magazine’s “Top 25 Young

Entrepreneurs” and Mother Nature Network’s, “Innovation Generation: 30 Fresh Thinkers Helping Humanity Adapt to What’s Next.”

Previous to HUMAN, Sean founded Fit Fuel, LLC, the country’s first 100% healthy vending company, which he helped grow to over $4 million in sales. Sean was a Hodson Trust Scholar at The Johns Hopkins University and has a biomedical engineering degree with a specialization in biomechanics from Columbia University. He holds two national championship medals in freestyle snowboarding and was one of 20 people in the world to compete in two 10K races on two different continents (Australia and North America) during the same day for the worldwide Nike Human Race.

Andy Mackensen believes that entrepreneurs can and should effect positive change by ac-tively pursuing solutions to the world’s greatest challenges. It is no coincidence that Andy has experience tackling problems of international proportion—as a Naval Officer and Fast Boat Commander, he successfully led numerous counter-terrorist Special Forces operations dur-ing the Iraq War and earned two

Navy Commendation Medals.

Andy is an expert in vending business optimization, internet marketing strategies, building high-performance sales teams, and making people smile. He holds a BS in Business Administration from Boston University and an MBA from the Stanford Gradu-ate School of Business. He enjoys skiing, running, being active, and the pursuit of social entrepreneurship.

HUMAN’s vending machines are holistically sustainable – from their machine technology to the foods they vend. Here’s what else makes HUMAN machines so darn spiffy:

• We offer better-for-you foods and drinks, including locally-sourced items! We have a catalogue of over 5000 food & drink items that have been screened by a panel of health experts, including doctors and registered dietitians. Plus, our machines are able to stock fresh fruit and vegetables. We work directly with our franchisees and locations to ensure that the foods vended in our machines meet the location’s specific dietary, allergy, and legislative requirements.

• We educate…digitally. HUMAN machines are the only vending machines that educate the consumer at the point of sale. Our high-definition LCD screens display streaming video and digital content, including the nutrition facts of the products in the machine, as well as tips on how to read a nutrition label. A doctor and reporter in Buffalo, New York, said of our machines: “...reading that LCD screen may encourage the kids to start reading labels, then they’ll realize that the snacks they enjoy don’t have to be loaded with fats, processed foods, and sugar…” - Dr. Peter Ostrow, medical reporter for WIVB.

• We’re green. Our machines are up to 50% more energy-efficient than their dinosaur competitors. Plus, our machines have remote sensors that automatically track inventory and product expiration dates, which save our franchisees from wasting their gas to restock their machines!

• We’re technologically legit. For the convenience of our patrons, our machines accept credit and debit cards, RFID tags, employee or student ID cars, and cash. For the convenience of our franchisees, our machines are equipped with strategically-placed infrared sensors and a self- diagnosing system – both of which prevent vending errors and possible machine complications. Also, our machines feature conveyor belts rather than old-school coils, thus increasing their versatility and capacity. This allows our machines to vend much more than just foods and drinks, including items like toiletries, workout towels, clothing, nutrition supplements, school supplies and more.

• We’re full service. That’s right. Ever wanted an entire healthful meal straight from a vending machine? We’ve got you covered. Our machines can offer chilled or frozen foods that can be microwaved internally before dispensed. We also have machines with fair-trade & organic coffee!

• We’re free to locations. We want to make it a no-brainer to have healthy vending at schools, hospitals, gyms, government and corporate locations and community centers, so we make it free to have us there. As we like to say, “we make nutrition easy.”

WE’RE SOCIAL!

THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR’S PROGRAM

MEET CAPTAIN HUMAN!

HUMAN Everywhere STREET TEAM

The Young Entrepreneur’s Program’s mission is to empower youth to learn the ropes of social entrepreneurship by owning and operating their own healthy vending business in the comfort of their school and with the support of their peers, school staff and HUMAN Healthy Vending. Students learn about the challenges we face in today’s world: food deserts, health dispari-ties and junk food diets that play a large role in our current health crises. Even better? They’ll learn how to find solutions.

Captain HUMAN has an extraordinary mission: to make healthful food just as convenient, appeal-ing and accessible as junk food. Captain HUMAN fights ALIENs, which are food-like substances that Attack Life as Infectious Enemies of Nutrition. You’ll often find this green and grinning superhero in school classrooms teaching students how to be mindful consumers and imparting his slogan, “EASY NUTRITION EVERYWHERE!”

HUMAN in the COMMUNITY

We consider ourselves – our headquarters, franchisees, and locations – one big family of social entrepreneurs. Social entrepreneurship is defined by using the power of business to solve social problems. By donating 10% of corporate proceeds to charities that teach nutrition and social entrepreneurship in underserved communities, and by running a non-profit arm, HUMAN is doing its part to create a culture of social entrepreneurship. HUMAN franchisees also do their part in leading the charge by hosting nutrition-focused sampling events throughout their communities and educating consumers on how to choose healthful snacks and beverages. HUMAN makes healthy food FUN!

WHAT OUR FRANCHISEES ARE SAYING

“We started looking at how we could eat better and realized we could do better for our family…

and then it became a greater purpose- we could do better for Charlotte.”

- Patti Moore, Charlotte, NC

“I can’t tell you the level of excitement that these kids have for the product- parents actually come up to us, thanking us for putting in the vending machine, thank us for helping make a difference, thank us for helping their children become more educated. It’s really inspiring, the community is rooting for us to succeed and I’ve never been in a business where people actually want you to succeed and they’re parting with their hard earned dollars and they’re happy to do so. “ - Pat DePirro, Miami, FL

“My husband John and I operate this business and we felt strongly that we wanted to start a business that we could be proud of and that could impact our community and our society and certainly our kids by giving them healthier options.” - John & Suzanne McMillan, Nashville, TN

WHAT OUR LOCATIONS ARE SAYING

“At Hawken, they try to make lunches as healthy as they can; they give the calories, all the nutritional information, and so the HUMAN Healthy Vending Program is along those same

lines. So that when the kids do need more food, we’re giving them the healthy option. We’re not just giving them junk, which is backwards from what we’re trying to do at lunch time.”

- Bridget Harrison, School Nurse in Cleveland, OH

“The first time the students saw the machine they were ecstatic! I think it’s because it’s just so colorful and eye catching, that was the first thing they noticed. And then when they got to see all the new items in there they were really intrigued. The faculty love the fact that it has credit card access...and I get tickled when I hear great feedback about what they’ve tried from the machine and what they really like.” - Gina Turcotte, Director of Advancement at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Greenville, SC

“HUMAN Healthy Vending provides us with wellness options that are not available from our conventional vending supplier. We are excited to be the first medical center in Hawaii to take this approach with our vending program” - Pamela MacChlerie, RD, Director, Food & Nutrition Services, Queen’s Medical Center, Honolulu, HI

“HUMAN Healthy Vending fits our mission to a T. Being an organization that promotes healthy lifestyles, we made a decision to replace conventional snack machines with healthy alternatives, so we are very excited to have HUMAN’s plentiful options. Our members are excited too as they can often be found gathering around the machine and talking about the products. I hope we can have more machines in here soon” - Bill Barringer, VP Operations, YMCA of Greenville, SC

“We found that HUMAN Healthy Vending will complement our wellness initiatives by promoting health and nutrition. Not only are we providing healthy options, we are uniting with HUMAN in giving back to the community” - Sheila Nassef, HR Wellness Specialist, DSM Pharmaceuticals, Greenville, NC

“Getting healthy products into schools, in a machine that was marketable and that kids would really like, wasn’t an option to us before HUMAN Healthy Vending. I have actually recommended HUMAN every opportunity that I’ve had. I believe in the product, I believe in the mission of the organization, which is to help prevent childhood obesity, to help promote healthy and nutritious snacks and foods in our society. 1 out of every 3 kids in our country is going to develop type II diabetes by the time they’re 18 if we don’t do something to change current trends. I see this as a great tool—one tool—in the process to make a very positive change for the kids in our district and in our state” - Dr. Chris Lineberry, Principal, Florence Virtual Academy, Florence, AZ

“It’s extremely important for my employees to have access to very healthy options at work since they’re here for the majority of their days. All are looking to stay healthy and maintain good health, and as a company that is our vision to promote health for our patients as well as our employees.” - Ribka Fox, HR Director at Quest Diagnostics in Sherman Oaks, CA

WOMEN’S HEALTH

“At Santa Monica-based H.U.M.A.N. (Helping Unite Man and Nutri-tion) Healthy Vending, top sellers include Pirate’s Booty, Kashi granola bars and Stacy’s Pita Chips, says founder and ‘chief human-ist’ Sean Kelly.” “...such fare is better than the top-selling items from mainstream vend-ing machines, according to the State of the Vending Industry report: Snickers bars, followed by Peanut M&Ms, Twix bars, Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream potato chips, Doritos Nacho Cheesier Big Grab, Lay’s chips,

“Sean Kelly, chief executive officer of Human Healthy Vend-ing, which designed the machine with the digital message screen, said that promotions like digital messages, free samples and contests helped to increase monthly sales to an average of about $1,500 per machine, up from $1,000 last year. ‘You cannot just take a standard vending machine, throw graphics on it, put some healthier options in there and expect everything to work out perfectly,’ he said.”

1. Rethink your snacks. Processed food can cause you to feel anxious, foggy, and hyperactive. You can prevent these symptoms by eating whole foods, especially more fruits and leafy, green vegetables and avoiding foods with chemical addi-tives. As Hippocrates once said, “Let food be thy medicine.” The added bonus is that by fueling yourself optimally, you also set yourself up for professional success because what you eat is tied to how you feel and function.

Action: If you find yourself turning to a vending machine for a meal or snack, choose items that have ingredients you can pronounce. Remember WOLF: Whole, Organic, and Local Foods. Want something filling? Go for something with healthful fat and protein, like unsalted nuts.

2. Find joyful movement. Studies consistently show that while exercise may not lead to weight loss, it is a sure way to improve your health. Physical activity releases feel-good, stress-relieving endorphins. Instead of finding exercises to do for the sake of exercising, find an activity you enjoy doing. The “intrinsic exercise” movement espouses that we should do exercises that provide us with joy and make us feel good in our bodies rather than doing exercises as a means to an end (i.e. as punishment for eating).

Action: Find an exercise you enjoy by experimenting with differ-ent exercises and movements. Instead of seeking exercises that burn calories, seek movement that makes you feel good. You’ll be more likely to stick to it and reap the health benefits.

3. Let technology work for you. There are many fitness and health-focused smartphone apps that can make your hectic life a little easier. From apps that track your weight-lifting progress, to apps that find the right songs to match your running tempo, there is something on the market for everyone. Some of my favorites include:

Everest — provides step-by-step tips and encouragement from other users to help you reach your personal goals or “summit”;Fitocracy — this social-networking-meets-gym-time app helps you share your workouts and motivation with others;Fooducate — allows you to scan a food item’s barcode to find out whether it’s healthful; andGratitude Journal — a mobile journaling tool that asks users to write down at least five things they’re grateful for each day.

Action: Download a few free smartphone apps for fitness or health and test out which ones you like. You never know — these apps may be just the thing you need to keep you on the right track.

THE BIGGEST TOLL IS on quality of life and theexample you are setting for future generations.

Sean KellyCEO and co-founder, HUMAN

YMCA professionals are just like most working professionals: stressed out and often eating foods based on convenience, rather than how they make you feel. According to a survey from the American Psychological Association, more than one-third of American workers experience chronic work-related stress. The result? Billions of dollars are lost annually due to ab-senteeism and medical bills.

The biggest toll, however, is on your quality of life and the example you’re setting for members and future genera-tions. As a YMCA professional, you want to be a good example to your members. Since optimal health is about the bal-ance of mind, body, and spirit— and this is at the core of the Y’s messaging and experience — how do you work on these things while also juggling your career and other commitments?

The key: You have to realize that your professional success is intricately tied to your personal wellbeing. Here are seven actionable items to improve your overall wellbeing:

WALKINGTHE WALK

Here’s how to improve your physical and emotional wellbeing in seven actionable steps.

THE POINTProfessional success is tied to personal wellbeing.

How is that work-life balance working out for you?We often hear that we’ve got to strike this elusive thing called “bal-ance” between our professional and personal lives. Chances are, however, you’ve yet to find it. And that’s because, in many ways,

it just doesn’t exist. As famed entrepreneur Richard Branson says, “I don’t divide work and play: It’s all living.”

Thelatesttrendsinbringinghealthfuleatingtotheoffice:See if your company wellness program would consider bringing in healthy vending machines or a healthful self-serve micro-market placed seamlessly into your office space. Healthy vending machines vend healthful items, including fresh fruit and locally-sourced products. Employees can use key cards, credit cards and more. Healthy vending machines are free to office locations that meet minimum qualifications. Many machines are high-tech and even eco-friendly. Healthy Micro-markets: Imagine a self-serve natural foods store integrated seamlessly into your office space -- that is a micro- market. Also free to offices that meet minimum qualifications, micro-markets are a great option

for larger office spaces that want to provide a breadth of healthful snack and meal options. Fair-trade & organic coffee machines: There are now sleek vending machines that vend fair-trade and organic coffee, which is a great time- and money-saver for employees who leave the office for expensive store-bought coffee.

Whenchoosingmeals:Ask yourself: “what’s the foundation of this meal?“ If it is a muffin, for example, you know just by looking at it and touching it that its foundation is flour, sugar and oil, so you may want to steer clear. Alternately, if the foundation seems healthful- like a salad - and it is just the add-ons that make it less nutritious - just be mindful about what you add on (or about what you should take off). The range

of calories and fat in your favorite items is crazy-like the 1490-calorie steak omelet at Ihop versus the 152-calorie “Low Fat Fitness” omelet from Mimi’s Cafe. This just goes to show you that you can still eat things you like and still not ruin your efforts to live healthfully... as long as you are mindful about it (and do your research beforehand if you can!).

OtherQuickTips:“Fast food” does not have to equal junk food: ditch fried items in favor of grilled or steamed items.

Instead of white flour items (like white rice or white pasta), opt for brown rice and/or whole grain/whole wheat.

Make fruits and/or vegetables your side order.

Limit foods with the following descriptors: rich, batter, breaded, butter, cream, crispy, decadent, anything with “fried” in the de-scription, and scalloped. All of these descrip-tors translate to excess calories and fat.

Watch your portion size. In the 1950s, ham-burger patties were 1.5 ounces, while today’s burgers weigh in at around 8 ounces. You do not have to eat everything served to you and you can be proactive about portions by shar-ing a meal or choosing side dishes that are light, such as fresh vegetables.

Do not drink your meal. Opt for water or low-sugar beverages. Remember that 4g of sugar are equivalent to a teaspoon.

Plan your week. Sundays are great days to plan your meals and cook ahead of time. You can make a big batch of brown rice or steamed vegetables to bring to the office each day.

Be a mindful eater. Take time to taste your food and honor feelings of fullness.

At the end of the day, your workplace is a second home and how you eat and interact there plays a huge role (if not the biggest role) in your overall wellbeing. By learn-ing how to sidestep the junk food, make informed decisions and improve your office wellness programs, your office can be the next trailblazer in the food revolution!

4. Find your zen. Meditation centers oneself, and to calm one’s mind. A consis-tent meditation practice may help lower blood pressure and stress. The benefit of long-term practice is gaining the ability to control thoughts that can trigger stress.

Action: Try out a class, checking out a book on meditation, or sim-ply finding a peaceful spot in your home or YMCA to sit in solitude and concentrate on just being and breathing.

5. Prioritize “you time.” We cannot be our best selves if we always put work and others before ourselves. As they say: Put your own oxygen mask on first.

Action: Learn to say “no.” This can be very hard at first, but you’ll get the hang of it. You talk to your members every day about the importance of a healthy mind and body, but do you take care of your own? If you want to make sure you fit in workouts and meditation time, schedule it into your calendar and consider it a date with yourself that you cannot break. Give yourself the respect you would a friend or colleague.

6. Get your zzzs. Challenges, including work-related stressors, become magnified when you’re sleep-deprived. Adding insult to injury, your body’s hunger and satiation cues also get out of whack when you’re sleep-deprived, which can leave you feeling famished all day. Do yourself a favor and get at least seven hours of sleep each night.

Action: Always missing a reasonable bedtime? Schedule it into your calendar. Have trouble sleeping? Try meditating before you go to bed.

7. Add, don’t subtract. Studies show that it’s much easier to add a new task to an existing habit than to try to start a new habit. It’s also better to break down goals into small steps. For example, want to be able to do 50 push-ups and can’t even do one? Start by doing one push up after brushing your teeth and adding another every day. Before you know it, you reach your goal.

Action: Choose a small goal and add it to an existing habit. While it’s easy to get lost in the hustle of our lives, especially when we’re doing a job that serves others, we have to real-ize that our ability to lead is tied directly to how we feel in mind, body, and spirit. As a YMCA professional, you owe it to yourself, and those you work with and for, to make the time to fuel your bodies and minds optimally.

What to Do When Your Office is a Junk Food Maze? By Sean Kelly

I once queried my friends to find out what their office snacking options were. I was astonished with the results. The majority

reported that their offices brought in catered lunches loaded with potato chips and dessert trays. Then, there was the friend who worked at a law firm that supplied cabinets filled to the brim with full-sized candy bars, chip bags, cookies and more. With full-time employees spending at least a third of their lives in the office, do they even have a chance to live health-fully? The answer is yes. Some office spaces, like Google, are com-mendable for making it easy for their employees to make healthful choices, while other offices are less than helpful.

Even those of us who work in corporate wellness can find our-selves straying from wellness when we are pulling late hours and the leftover kitchen donuts call our names. Here are some of the best tips I have learned for choosing healthful snacks and meals during the workday:

When choosing snacks at the office:Choose a snack that has a rounded mix of protein, healthful fat and fi-ber to help you feel satisfied. Some options include: nuts, a fruit and nut bar or a piece of fruit with a tablespoon of nut butter. Choose snacks with ingredients you can pronounce as highly processed foods can cause you to feel anx-ious, foggy and hyperactive. Disregard the front label of snack packages; that is where the prod-uct’s marketing messages are. Instead, go straight for the nutrition facts and ingredients. Remember that nutritional components such as fiber, protein and fat only tell a part of a product’s story. Read the entire label (nutri-tion facts and ingredients list) to get the full story. Use Smart phone apps to make informed decisions. The free app Fooducate allows consumers to scan barcodes of foods to find out how healthful they are. The Good Food Near You app, also free, helps you find the most healthful restau-rant near you and browse its menu, with the ability to sort by calories, lowest fat and more.
