backgrounderDELTA HOSPITALa brief history

Planning for the hospital began in the early 1960s and was enthusiastically supported by the community. In 1974, Delta Municipal Council and the Greater Vancouver Regional Hospital District (GVRHD) jointly purchased the land where Delta Hospital sits today. Construction on the first phase immediately got underway for a 75 bed extended care hospital which officially opened on January 28, 1977. Quickly thereafter, building began on the second phase - an acute care hospital with an emergency department, operating rooms, X-ray, laboratory, hospital records, sterilization and house-keeping facilities and room for ambulatory services with an emphasis on daycare surgery. In March 1977, Delta Hospital received approval for a further 75 acute care beds. Delta Hospital officially opened on September 5, 1980.

In Spring of 2002, after wide-spread healthcare reform recommended centralizing services to Richmond, Vancouver and Surrey, Delta Hospital was downgraded to a sub-acute care facility and lost its acute and intensive care services. A coalition of community members, came together in effort to build awareness and raise money to mount pressure on political decision makers to reinstate the acute care status of Delta Hospital. With strong community support, Delta Hospital’s acute care status was reinstated in July 2008.

In 2008, the Emergency department was expanded - tripling its floor space. Surgical Daycare was renovated and relocated, and a new lobby was added to welcome patients. Within a few months of having Delta Hospital’s acute care status reinstated, 12 additional acute care beds were added, along with a Rapid Access Clinic and a newly renovated Endoscopy Suite. A state-of-the-art 64 slice CT scanner arrived in March 2009. In 2012, a $500,000 Cardiac Care package, including a vital portable ultrasound, was purchased for Delta Hospital.

Today, as part of the Fraser Health Authority, Delta Hospital is one of an integrated network of hospitals providing linked services with 11 other acute care sites. Delta Hospital serves a population of over 100,000 in the communities of North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. It is a primary care, Level II community hospital with the ability to provide first point of contact services that include diagnoses, treatments, disease prevention, illness and injury care.

Delta Hospital has 50 acute care beds. Additionally, the Rapid Access Clinic provides specialized outpatient care. Mountain View Manor, Delta Hospital’s Residential Care Facility has 92 beds. Delta Hospital’s Emergency Room has 10 acute care beds, 10 observation beds, and 1 ambulance bay. In addition, it has 2 negative pressure rooms, several spaces in fast track for suturing and Orthopedics exams, and a trauma room providing around the clock care. In addition, the Surgical Daycare department has 3 operating rooms, 13 pre- and post- operation care beds, 6 post-anesthetic recovery bays, and a dedicated 2 room endoscopy unit. A much anticipate Orthopedic Services and a Friday cast clinic was added in 2016.

In 2011, a ‘Master Concept Plan’ was completed by Fraser Health, looking at a 20 year vision for the hospital. The plan outlined the current and future medical needs of this community and the direction regarding expansion and development that the hospital should take. In 2015, the funding for the first phase of the ‘Master Concept Plan’ was completed and construction for the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostics Building will begin shortly.

Delta Hospital offers a full suite of medical services, comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services, and community health programs. The hospital has over 580 employees (part and full time) that provide quality healthcare to this community.

fact sheetCAPITAL CAMPAIGN‘Healthy & Growing’ Diagnostic Services Building

summaryEnhancing and expanding diagnostic services will help Delta Hospital meet the healthcare needs of our growing community and aging population. Securing the funds (in total $12.5 million - $7.5 million from funds raised by Delta Hospital Foundation) to build the new Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services building allows Delta Hospital to continue to provide outstanding patient care to its community. This expansion is the largest in Delta Hospital’s history.

strengthening the backbone Diagnostic Services is the backbone of Delta Hospital. It houses the laboratory and medical imaging departments. The results from a medical test from the lab, an X-Ray from Medical Imaging, or a CT scan, can and will save lives. Results gathered from these tests give doctors the information they need to make accurate diagnoses and prescribe the correct treatments to their patients. Whether it is a broken arm or a suspected illness, medical tests and their results ultimately steer the direction of treatment.

Delta Hospital’s Diagnostic Services has been operating at full capacity for many years. As our community continues to both grow and age, so does our need for expanded and enhanced diagnostic services. In 2016, there were 523,167 lab tests performed and 44,911 medical imaging exams, including X-Rays, Ultrasounds, CT Scans, and Mammograms. The ability for any hospital to have a state-of-the-art diagnostic facility, run by a knowledgeable and professional medical staff is central to the administration of successful healthcare. Delta Hospital will soon be in this position and will no longer be deterred by space or equipment limitations. This means that patient wait times for processing samples and test results will decrease, and treatments, through accurate diagnoses, will be quicker to determine; allowing for more patients to be on the road to healthy recoveries sooner.

Enhancing and expanding Diagnostic Services will: • help medical staff deliver outstanding patient care • allow for faster and more precise diagnoses • give more privacy and comfort to patients • shorten stays for patients • lessen need for patient transfers • enable the housing of additional state-of-the-art medical equipment • ultimately lead to less stress for medical staff, patients and their families

the planDiagnostic Services will double in size, making it easier for staff to treat patients and operate more efficiently. This new build-ing will allow for 32,000 more patient visits each year. This new building will be located on the south side of Delta Hospital’s acute care wing. It will be situated adjacent to the Emergency Department and the Main Entrance.

Delta Hospital Foundation, through its generous donors, raised its committed $7.5 million for this $12.5 million partnership project with Fraser Health. Groundbreaking is set to take place in the early Spring of 2017. Fraser Health will operate and maintain this healthcare centre when it opens.

The Medical Imaging Department will be relocated to Level 1 of the Diagnostics building. It will be built adjacent to the Emergency Department, Out-patient Entrance (Main Entrance) and to operating rooms. The Laboratory Medicine Department will be relocated to Level 2 of the Diagnostics building. It will be built adjacent to the Out-patient Entrance (Main Entrance), Emergency Department, and the In-patient wards and clinics.
