BACKGROUNDThe lake is 186 miles long and has nearly 2,000 miles of shoreline. Straddling the Arizona-Utah border, its sapphire blue water is rimmed by towering red sandstone cliffs, buttes, and more than 90 major canyons and beautiful sandy beaches—making it the ideal destination for houseboating, kayaking and other outdoor activities.

Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas is one of the largest concessioners on the lake, operating marinas, lodges, restaurants, tours and houseboat/watercraft rentals in Arizona and Utah. It operates primarily out of two hubs: Wahweap Marina, located in Arizona near the town of Page, and at Bullfrog Marina, located mid-lake in Utah. In addition to the robust operations at these two destinations, Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas also offers amenities at Halls Crossing Marina, Hite and Dangling Rope Marina, all in Utah.

SEASONLake Powell is open year-round, however, peak visitation occurs between late May through October, with July and August being the busiest months.

HISTORY Lake Powell is the nation’s second largest man-made reservoir. It was created by the damming of the Colorado River in Glen Canyon in order to provide drinking water and generate electricity for western cities such as Los Angeles and Phoenix, and to provide a place for recreation. The lake is named in honor of John Wesley Powell, who explored the area in 1869 as director of the U.S. Geological Survey.

The lake lies within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, which was created in 1972 “to provide for public use and enjoyment and to preserve the area’s scientific, historic, and scenic features.” The recreation area received more than two million visitors in 2012, 100,000 of whom stayed on a houseboat operated by Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas.

FEESAs a part of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, there is an entrance fee for each private, non-commercial vehicle and its passengers that is valid for seven consecutive days.

LAKE POWELL AT A GLANCE

• Lake Powell is the second-largest man-made lake by surface area in the United States and is the largest based on current volume and surface area.

ACTIVITIES

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell offer countless outdoor activities that facilitate a broad spectrum of adventure—from a casual day trip to full immersion into all the area has to offer.

FISHINGLake Powell has a bounty of smallmouth and striped bass, walleye, catfish, crappie and bluegill that can be caught from your boat or with the help of an expert guide. Whether you’re a seasoned fisherman hoping for a record catch, or just want to relax under the sun with a rod and reel and try your hand at fishing, Lake Powell is the destination of choice. The lake is teaming with Smallmouth Bass, Striped Bass, Walleye, Catfish, Crappie and Bluegill— so there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be hooking dinner for your whole group!

Because Lake Powell spans two states, we encourage guests to visit both the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the Arizona Game and Fishing Department for fishing and license information.

HIKINGVery few roads traverse the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, leaving much of its expansive red sandstone landmarks to be explored on foot. The area has a number of marked trails and nearly 2,000 miles of backcountry and side canyons open for exploration. Hikers will find numerous hidden trails in Lake Powell’s canyons, which offer incredible views and peaceful surroundings. These sites and trails can only be accessed by boat or kayak, adding to the adventure.

One of the best ways to explore the rugged beauty of this wilderness is via horseback. For reservations for this adventure, phone 928-660-2674.

WHITEWATER RAFTING

Wilderness River Adventures operates a number of whitewater rafting options on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon and Canyonlands National Parks. Grand Canyon rafting operates April to October and Cataract Canyon May to mid August, with trips departing frequently at both locations. There is no waiting list for rafting trips.

Wilderness River Adventures has been running the Colorado River since 1983 and has more than 140 years of combined experience on the river. The company constantly upgrades its gear and uses state-of-the-art oar and motorized boats. Motorized boats are 37 feet long and can transport up to 15 passengers and their gear. Oar boats are 18 feet long and accommodate up to five passengers.

River trips are guided by experienced and knowledgeable guides who not only navigate the raft through rapids, but also share the area’s history, geology and secrets. Guides also serve as camp chefs serving delicacies such as steak and birthday cake for those celebrating on the river. Rafters are provided with all necessary camping equipment including: tent, sleeping bag, camp chair, dry bag, food, water, sodas, a souvenir cup, hat and t-shirt. Learn more at riveradventures.com

GRAND CANYON ADVENTURESThe Grand Canyon’s segment of the Colorado River is assured a reliable flow of water from Glen Canyon Dam. This facilitates predictable and sustained rapids even during drought years. Wilderness River Adventures offers a wide range of trips for those looking to raft this iconic locale, including motorized and oar boats with upper, lower, and full-canyon itineraries, with trip lengths ranging from three to 16 days.

Upper and lower canyon trips include a hiking guide for the 10-mile trek through the canyon. Lower and full canyon trips also include a helicopter flight, shower, lunch at the Bar 10 Ranch and a flight back to Las Vegas, NV, South Rim of the Grand Canyon or Page, AZ.

Raft trips depart from Potash, UT, a few miles south of Moab, and travel 96 miles to Hite Marina on the northern tip of Lake Powell. Trips range in length from two to five days.

HYBRID TRIPSFor those who want the hands-on action of a paddle trip but would like the opportunity to occasionally rest their weary arms, river trips with both oar and motorized rafts are available through the Grand Canyon with 5 1/2, 6 1/2 r 12-day options.

Not only will you be able to spend more quality time with your loved ones, but the wide array of activities means there is something for everyone and there will never be a dull moment.

• Mancations: guys looking to get away from the ladies for a little bonding and manly activities need not look any further! With houseboats, water sports, fishing, white water rafting and other outdoor activities, Lake Powell is the ideal location for a guy’s only getaway.
