Myths and Mountains, Inc. is not your average travel company. While hundreds of other tour operators funnel their customers to and from popular tourist destinations, Myths
and Mountains provides travelers with an intimate experience with the places they visit. This philosophy, along with a vast network of local figures in the places the company
visits, places Myths and Mountains at the forefront of the so-called “experiential travel” trend. When travelers who use Myths and Mountains come home, they bring more than
just pictures and souvenirs; they bring memories that will last a lifetime.
Myths and Mountains was born in 1984 when the company’s president and founder Dr. Toni Neubauer took a trip to Nepal. Neubauer has spent more than 20 years working in Asia and Southeast Asia, and has developed a close relationship with the people of the area. Through Myths and Mountains, she hopes to share the enrichment she has experienced through her travels by connecting travelers with the area’s cultures.
Rooted in adventure
One of the central aspects of any culture is worship. That’s why many Myths and Mountains trips are designed around the world’s holy
places. Often far off the beaten tourist path, these trips give travelers the chance to visit and even worship at these unique places.
Travelers with Myths and Mountains can take a pilgrimage to the holy Mount Chomolhari in Bhutan or meditate and worship with the holy
men of Nepal’s monasteries. Of the other side of the globe, Ecuador’s shamans will demonstrate healing arts passed down for generations.
Trips for the soul
Adventure is at the heart of travel. The people at Myths and Mountains know this, and have organized a host of trips designed to get travelers’ blood pumping. For those looking to scrape the heavens, the company offers guided tours of Nepal’s Annapurna Massif and treks to Peru’s Machu Picchu, Mount Everest Base Camp, or through the ancient monasteries of Tibet.
For athletic adventurers
Myths and Mountains also provides tours for animal lovers hoping to see some of the world’s wildest creatures.
The company offers three separate trips to the world’s most unique ecosystem: the Galapagos Islands. On these trips, travelers can explore the islands by boat, walk
among wildlife on land, or follow Charles Darwin’s original path through the islands. Wildlife lovers who aren’t afraid of a little humidity can venture to the Tambopata-
Cadamo Wildlife Research Center, located deep in the Peruvian Amazon. The area is home to more than 500 bird and 1,000 butterfly species, which travelers can see from
a perch atop the center’s canopy tower.
Wildlife viewings
In addition to their organized trips, Myths and Mountains offers travelers the chance to craft a custom travel experience. By making use of the company’s vast network of locals, staff can cater to almost any curiosity travelers have in the regions they serve. Bring a map, a plan, and a budget and the Myths and Mountains team can make a plan that fits your needs.
Custom tours
Custom Adventures
Myths and Mountains hopes travelers will come back from their tours enriched. The company also works to enrich the communities in which it works, namely
through the READ (Rural Education And Development) program. Also founded by Dr. Neubauer, READ works with rural communities in Bhutan,
India, and Nepal to build libraries. Those libraries provide the children and adults in remote villages access not only to books, but to current newspapers and
magazines, the internet, and education. Once the library is built, READ works with members of the local community to establish for-profit enterprises that benefit the
community over the long-term.
