PHOENIX SUNS DRAFT NOTES 2007 • The Phoenix Suns own two first-round draft picks (24, 29) for the second consecutive year and for the third time since 2002. Phoenix selected guards Rajon Rondo (21st overall) and Sergio Rodriguez (27th) in the first round of the 2006 NBA Draft, but traded both players in separate draft night deals. • Phoenix owns three draft picks, including the 59th overall selection in the second round. The last time the Suns made three draft selections was in the 1996 NBA Draft when the club chose Steve Nash (15th) in the first round and Russ Millard (39th) and Ben Davis (43rd) in the second round. • If the Suns hold onto their first two picks, it would mark only the fifth time in franchise history the team has made two first-round selections (1975, Alvan Adams-4th, Ricky Sobers-16th; 1988, Tim Perry-7th, Dan Majerle-14th; 1995, Michael Finley-21st, Mario Bennett-27th ; 2002, Amaré Stoudemire-9th and Casey Jacobsen-22nd; 2006, Rajon Rondo-21st and Sergio Rodriguez-27th). • Phoenix acquired the 24th pick from the Cleveland Cavaliers (via Boston) as part of a 2006 draft day trade. The Suns traded the draft rights to Kentucky’s Rajon Rondo to the Celtics and the contract of forward/center Brian Grant for a lottery-protected first round draft pick (via Cleveland) and cash considerations. • Phoenix has either traded or acquired a first-round draft pick in four consecutive drafts. In 2003, Phoenix acquired the draft rights to Leandro Barbosa (28th overall) from San Antonio in exchange for a future first-round pick (Phoenix completed the deal by sending the 30th pick overall in the 2005 NBA Draft to S.A., who conveyed it to New York). In 2004, Phoenix traded the draft rights to Luol Deng (7th) for a conditional first-round pick, the draft rights to Jackson Vroman (31st) and cash. In 2005, the Suns swapped the draft rights to guard Nate Robinson (21st) and Quentin Richardson to New York in exchange for the draft rights to Dijon Thompson (54th) and center Kurt Thomas. In 2006, Phoenix traded the draft rights to Rajon Rondo (21st) and Brian Grant to Boston for a lottery-protected first-round pick (via Cleveland) and traded the draft rights to Sergio Rodriguez (27th) to Portland for cash considerations. • For only the third time in the last 10 NBA Drafts, Phoenix owns a second-round pick (59th). The last time the Suns made a second-round choice AND did not trade the pick was in the 2001 NBA Draft when Phoenix grabbed forward Alton Ford with the 51st pick overall. • The Suns’ 59th pick in the second round will be the team’s latest draft selection since the club drafted Ron Singleton of Grand Canyon with 145th pick in the seventh round of the 1987 NBA Draft. The league switched to a three-round draft in 1988 and then to the current two-round format in 1989.

PHOENIX SUNS DRAFT NOTES 2007, page 2 • The Suns have unearthed some gems in the second round of the draft including former Suns player Jeff Hornacek (46th overall, 1986), former Suns player and current arena emcee Cedric Ceballos (48th, 1990) and current Suns President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Steve Kerr (50th overall, 1988) and current Warriors guard Stephen Jackson (42nd overall, 1997), the youngest Suns draft pick in franchise history (19 years, 2 months, 20 days). • Phoenix has drafted an early entry candidate 15 times in club history, including 11 of its last 12 selections. Since 1997, the Suns have selected 11 underclassman, including Rajon Rondo and Sergio Rodriguez, 2006; Nate Robinson and Marcin Gortat, 2005; Luol Deng, 2004; Amaré Stoudemire and Casey Jacobsen, 2002; Alton Ford, 2001; Jake Tsakalidis, 2000; Shawn Marion, 1999; Stephen Jackson, 1997. The lone exception was Zarko Cabarkapa in 2003. Suns Ring of Honor member Alvan Adams was the Suns’ first underclassman chosen, but he was not an early entry candidate. The Suns drafted the junior in the 1975 NBA Draft before the NBA adopted the current Early Entry procedure whereby any athlete with remaining college eligibility who desires to enter the NBA Draft may do so by renouncing his college eligibility in a letter to the Commissioner postmarked 45 days before the draft. • The international influence in the NBA has touched the Suns several times. Phoenix chose Sergio Rodriguez (Spain, traded on draft night to Portland) in 2006, Marcin Gortat (Poland, traded on draft night to Orlando) in 2005, Luol Deng (Sudan, traded on draft night to Chicago) in 2004, Zarko Cabarkapa (Serbia & Montenegro) in 2003, Jake Tsakalidis (Georgia, Greece) in 2000, Steve Nash (Canada/South Africa) in 1996, Milous Babic (Croatia) in 1990, Georgi Glouchkov (Bulgaria) in 1985, Kalevi Sarkalahti (Finland) in 1973, and Gerhardus Schreur (Netherlands) in 1970. The Suns also traded for Leandro Barbosa (Brazil) on draft night in 2003. • The Suns concluded the 2006-07 season with 14 players, but only three were originally drafted by the Suns and all are former All-Stars. They include Shawn Marion (9th, 1999), Amaré Stoudemire (9th, 2002) and Steve Nash (15th, 1996). • In their history the Suns made some interesting “miscellaneous” draft picks. Current NBA referee Bernie Fryer was a seventh-round (109th overall) choice by Phoenix out of Brigham Young in the 1972 NBA Draft. NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin was a third-round (40th overall) choice by Phoenix out of Eastern Michigan in 1974. In addition, the Suns selected three players who are fathers of current or former NBA players. Phoenix picked Sam Clancy, Sr. (father of former Philadelphia 76ers forward Sam Clancy) in the third round (62nd overall) of the 1981 NBA Draft, Lynn Greer, Sr. (father of current Milwaukee Bucks guard Lynn Greer) in the 11th round (170th overall) of the 1973 NBA Draft and Walt Szczerbiak of George Washington in the fourth round (65th overall) of the 1971 NBA Draft, father of Boston Celtics swingman Wally Szczerbiak. • Phoenix will participate in the NBA Summer League (Las Vegas, Nevada) for the fourth consecutive year next month. This year’s Vegas summer league runs from July 6-15 and the Suns will play five games. The Suns first game is July 9 vs. Cleveland.

NBA DRAFT 2007 NOTES

• Eighty-four players applied for early entry in NBA Draft 2007, including 59 players from U.S. colleges and institutions and 25 international players. Those who have applied for early entry have the right to withdraw their names from consideration by notifying the NBA of their decision in writing 10 days prior to the draft. Of the 94 players who applied for early entry in 2006, 47 withdrew.

• Testing the draft waters is becoming a popular trend, with many high profile college juniors not automatically slated for the first round taking advantage of the rule that allows them to declare for the draft without hiring an agent, work out for teams and, perhaps, secure an invite to the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando. In 2006, Nevada’s Nick Fazekas, Rice’s Morris Almond and Pittsburgh’s Aaron Gray went through the process and decided to return to school for another season. South Carolina’s Renaldo Balkman (20th), P.J. Tucker of Texas (35th), Louisiana Tech’s Paul Millsap (47th), Miami’s Guillermo Diaz (52nd), George Washington’s J.R. Pinnock (58th) and Iowa State’s Will Blalock (60th) rolled the dice and were drafted. Iowa State’s Curtis Stinson, San Diego State’s Marcus Slaughter and Missouri’s Thomas Gardner went undrafted.

• Of the 60 players that were drafted in 2006, 15 spent time in D-League this past season, the second in which NBA teams were allowed to assign players. They ranged from the ninth overall pick (Patrick O’Bryant) to the 60th pick (Will Blalock). Thirty players from the past two drafts were assigned to D-League affiliates. In all, 24 players were assigned to D-League teams from NBA rosters last season.

• There were eight college seniors selected in the first round of the 2006 draft. Of the 30 players selected in the first round, 15 had at least three years of experience on the collegiate level. Twenty-two went to college for at least two years.

• NBA teams continue to find quality players in the second round of the NBA Draft. Of the 30 players chosen in the second round of the 2006 draft, 19 played in the NBA this past season. Nine other players have their rights held by NBA teams. Only two players – Denham Brown and J.R. Pinnock – were cut by their respective teams in training camp. Minnesota’s Craig Smith (36th) and Utah’s Paul Millsap (47th) each earned All-Rookie Second Team honors.

• In the 2006 draft, the Washington Wizards (Oleksiy Pecherov, 18th) and Portland Trail Blazers (Joel Freeland, 30th) spent first round picks on international players, who did not play in the NBA this past season. In 2005, the San Antonio Spurs chose Ian Manhinmi with the 28th overall selection. This trend figures to continue this year, with several young international players hoping to get into the first round, despite being several years away from contributing in the NBA.

NBA DRAFT 2007 NOTES, page 2

• Kevin Durant (Texas) and Greg Oden (Ohio State) became the first freshmen selected to the AP All-America First Team since 1990. Since freshmen became eligible to play in 1972, only two other freshmen have received these honors -- Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma in 1983 and Chris Jackson of LSU in 1990. Oden is the first Ohio State All-America selection in college basketball since Jim Jackson in 1992. Alando Tucker and Acie Law were Wisconsin's and Texas', respectively, first-ever AP All-America First Team selections. Aaron Afflalo became the first UCLA hoopster since Ed O'Bannon in 1995 to garner AP All-America First Team honors.

• The last team to win back-to-back NCAA titles before the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007 was the Duke Blue Devils in 1991 and 1992. In the 1992 NBA Draft, the Blue Devils had two players drafted – Christian Laettner (Minnesota, 3rd) and Brian Davis (Phoenix, 48th). Florida’s Al Horford, Corey Brewer and Joakim Noah figure to be selected in the first round of the 2007 draft. Taurean Green, should he keep his name in the draft, figures to be selected in the second round.

• As a result of a rule change this year, NBA teams were not permitted to conduct individual workouts with draft-eligible players prior to June 5. Workouts scheduled and sanctioned by the NBA were conducted at the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in Orlando, and open to all teams.

• Portsmouth Still Matters: Last year, 10 players parlayed their visit to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament into a spot in the NBA, including: David Noel (North Carolina) of Milwaukee, Chris Quinn (Notre Dame) and Robert Hite (Miami) of Miami, Jose Juan Barea (Northeastern) of Dallas, Steve Novak (Marquette) of Houston, Tarence Kinsey (South Carolina) of Memphis, Bobby Jones (Washington) of Philadelphia, Justin Williams (Wyoming) of Sacramento, Solomon Jones (South Florida) of Atlanta and Mike Hall (George Washington) of Washington.

• Last year, the Toronto Raptors won the lottery and chose Italy’s Andrea Bargnani with the top pick, but it was Portland’s Brandon Roy, the sixth overall selection, who garnered NBA Rookie of the Year honors. The last top overall pick to win Rookie of the Year was LeBron James in 2003-04. Since 1996, only four players – Allen Iverson, Tim Duncan, Elton Brand (shared honors with Steve Francis) and James – have gone on to win Rookie of the Year.

NBA DRAFT 2007 NOTES, page 3

• As the draft continues to get deeper each year, more “first-round talents” get pushed into the second round. While the second round affords no guarantees, teams have taken to the idea of giving a three-year contract, at a reasonable price, to players they feel may have slipped through the cracks and have great potential. A three-year deal allows the team to secure the player’s “Bird rights,” meaning they can exceed the salary cap in order to re-sign him. In 2001, the Golden State Warriors nabbed Gilbert Arenas in the second round, but only signed him to a two-year deal, and were unable to match the offer sheet he signed with Washington in 2003.

• The Philadelphia 76ers own the 21st and 30th overall picks in addition to a lottery pick. The Charlotte Bobcats (lottery pick and No. 22) have two picks in the first round, as do the Detroit Pistons (15 and 27). Phoenix also has two first-round picks (24 and 29). The Chicago Bulls have the right to swap first-round positions with the Knicks as one condition of the Eddy Curry trade, a right they are likely to exercise this year. Chicago is slated to pick 23rd, while the Knicks' position will be determined by the NBA Draft Lottery.

• In the early days, the draft used to last as long as teams desired, with the proceedings ending only when every team tired of calling out names. As of 1973, the draft lasted an amazing 20 rounds (at least it did for the fledgling Buffalo Braves, who needed all the players they could get after winning only 21 games the season before). In 1974, the league adopted a 10-round NBA Draft, a format that stayed in place until 1985, when it was scaled back to seven rounds. After three years of seven-round drafts, the draft was shaved to three rounds in 1988 and to its current length of two rounds in 1989.

• Eight players from this year’s National Championship game stand a good chance of being drafted. Florida’s Al Horford, Corey Brewer, Joakim Noah and Taurean Green, and Ohio State’s Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr. Daequan Cook and Ron Lewis could all hear their names called on June 28. In recent years, the National Championship game has been heavily populated with future draft picks the same year. In 2005, four players from North Carolina (Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton, Sean May and Rashad McCants) went in the lottery, while Illinois’ Deron Williams and Luther Head each went in the first round. In 2003, Carmelo Anthony of Syracuse and Kirk Hinrich and Nick Collison of Kansas were all drafted in the lottery. In 2002, Maryland’s Chris Wilcox, Juan Dixon and Lonny Baxter joined Indiana’s Jared Jeffries as draft picks.
