Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino begins the 61st  live racing season on Thursday, December 26 and extends through Tuesday, April 21, 2020.

The highly anticipated 68-day meet offers some of the most attractive races in the Southwest. The season is powered by the $700,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) and a sparkling stakes schedule worth $5 million filled with many $100,000 stakes races.

Over $1.5 million in purses will be on the line during Sunland Derby (Gr. III) day – Sunday, March 22, 2020. The 17th  running of the $700,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) at one and one-eighth miles is the richest and most important race of the meet for thee-year-olds seeking a berth in the 2020 Kentucky Derby. The Sunland Derby (Gr. III) winner receives 50 crucial qualifying points for entry into the Kentucky Derby. 2017 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) winner went on to win the Iowa Derby. Irap, fourth place finisher in the 2017 Sunland Derby (Gr. III), went on to win the Blue Grass Stakes (Gr. II) at Keeneland, the Ohio Derby (Gr. III) and the Indiana Derby (Gr. III) and was third in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga.

A new state record all-sources handle of over $4.8 million was set on the 2019 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) day card. The tally was the most ever bet on a single card in the history of New Mexico racing. A record crowd of 19,081 fans came out to cheer the 2015 edition of the Sunland Derby (Gr. III) won by Firing Line.   He would run second to eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby. Sunland Derby (Gr. III) winners Cutting Humor (2019), Hence (2017), Chitu (2014), Governor Charlie (2013), Daddy Nose Best (2012) and Twice the Appeal (2011) all ran in the Kentucky Derby. In 2009, Mine That Derby parlayed a fourth place finish in the Sunland Derby to a victory in the Kentucky Derby at 50-1 odds.

In addition to the Sunland Derby (Gr. III), the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks, $100,000 Harry W. Henson Handicap, $100,000 Bill Thomas Memorial Stakes, $120,000 New Mexico State University Stakes, $120,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks and

CLIMATE It’s rare to have a day in summer or winter when the sun doesn’t shine. In fact, it shines over 300 days a year! Winters are usually mild with an average daytime temperature of 60° F and an average low of 32.5° F. Occasionally, temperatures will drop enough to see snow, but it never lasts long, just enough for kids and some young-at-heart adults to get excited about the unusual winter-wonderland scene covering the desert, mountains and valley. Then, it’s gone as quickly as it came. The summers are hot and dry with a little less than 9 inches of rainfall each year. The average temperature during the day is 95° F if you just count June, July and August. When you consider the five months of May through September that actually make up the summer, the average daytime temperature drops to 91.5° F. It isn’t uncommon for the thermometer to drop 20 degrees or more during the summer night.

LOCATIONSituated on the border of two nations and three states, Sunland Park lies in the Chihuahuan Desert, 3,762 feet above sea level. The Rio Grande River flows directly parallel to the track, separating Texas from Mexico, and it creates a lush green valley ripe for farming and ranching. The area’s varied topography presents a scenic landscape and provides a pleasing contrast between arid desert, green valley and rugged mountains.

TIME ZONEEl Paso and Sunland Park are in the Mountain Time Zone and observe Daylight Saving Time from mid-March through October.

POPULATIONEl Paso is the sixth largest city in the state of Texas, with 649,121 inhabitants per the 2000 census (including El Paso County residents, that number is raised to 728,943). With its proximity to Juarez, Mexico, El Paso’s sister city, it’s difficult to talk about the population of one city without considering that of the other. Just across the border and within walking distance of each other’s downtown areas, Juarez is home to 1,700,000 people. Las Cruces is the fastest-growing city in New Mexico and the 11th fastest growing in the nation. Las Cruces, New Mexico, lies in the heart of the fertile Mesilla Valley and claims a population of 74,267. The population of Sunland Park, New Mexico, the home of Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, is approximately 8,179. This makes for a combined total population of over 2 million, creating the largest metropolitan area on the border between the United States and Mexico.

Our Turf Club is open through the year for Simulcast Wagering. However, during our racing season, all seating is reserved. Tables may be purchased for the season or reserved on a daily basis. NTRA ACCRED ITED MEMBERS MAP

NTRA SAFETY AND INTEGRITY ALLIANCEThe NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance is a standing organization whose purpose is to establish standards and practices to promote safety and integrity in horse racing and to secure their implementation. Corporate partners of the Alliance include Pfizer Animal Health and Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. Information on the Alliance, including the Alliance Code of Standards, can be found at www.NTRAalliance.com.

“Sunland Park has done an extraordinary job of working with the New Mexico Racing Commission to make the safety of horses and riders, and the integrity of the sport top priorities at its track in New Mexico,” said Alex Waldrop, President and CEO of the NTRA and acting head of the Alliance. “We commend Sunland for making great strides since their initial accreditation with the implementation of a number of best practices track-wide.”

Sunland Park received its initial Alliance accreditation in 2011 and is one of 23 racing facilities currently fully accredited by the Alliance. All accreditations and reaccreditations carry an effective period of two years. The accreditation was the culmination of a lengthy process that began with the track’s completion of a 48-page written application and continued

as Sunland hosted several meetings with Alliance officials. An on-site review included inspections of all facets of the racing facility. Interviews were also conducted with track executives, racetrack personnel, jockeys, owners, trainers, stewards and fans.

In areas intended to create a safer racing environment, best practices in use at Sunland Park include an on-site substance abuse and addiction treatment program; utilization of the Uniform National Trainers Test (adopted by the New Mexico State Racing Commission); and notification of House Rules in the Condition Book. In areas of equine drug testing and penalties, best practices identified include out-of-competition testing for blood and/or gene doping agents; frozen storage and retroactive “supertesting” of suspect plasma or urine samples; and use of an official testing laboratory that is fully-accredited by the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC); and proper security assessment and training. Regarding the health and safety of jockeys, best practices recognized include adherence to the Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) model rules pertaining to the scale of weights and jockey qualifications.

LEADING THOROUGHBRED TRAINERS

JUSTIN EVANS For the sixth time in the last seven years, Justin Evans took top honors as leading conditioner during the 2019 Sunland Park meet. One of America’s leading trainers based upon win percentage, Justin Evans won 37 times last season, hitting with a remarkable 27 percent of his starters and earning nearly $600,000 in purse money. During this campaign, Evans also reached a career milestone, eclipsing 2,000 wins as a trainer. Among his stakes winners last season were Raagheb, who captured the Winsham Lad Handicap. Evans streak of six straight trainer titles was snapped in 2018 when he finished second behind the late Henry Dominguez. In recent years, Evans has trained stars at Sunland Park like Bill and Sue Tomasic’s multiple stakes winner Mt Veeder, as well as Concord Fast for Teed Off Stables LLC, and Citizen Geller for UKUSA stables. Evans once again took top honors in the 2019 trainer standings at both the Downs at Albuquerque and SunRay Park and Casino meetings. He scored with 38 percent of his starters at the Downs at Albuquerque, including stakes winner Gunners One for owner Tommy Gunstream as well as Bokeelia Island, co-owned by Cindy Evans Perez and Justin’s wife Vanessa. Bokeelia Island also picked up a win in the Veterans Stakes at Zia Park where Evans is also leading in the standings. In all, Evans runners have won nearly 120 races in 2019. In his career, which started in 1999, Evans has won more than 2,100 races from over 8,700 starters with total earnings topping $26 million. Justin owns a home in Santa Teresa, New Mexico and is joined on the racing circuit by Vanessa and their children Austin, Addison and Anderson.

TODD FINCHER The 2018-19 season for Todd Fincher again proved successful, finishing fifth in the overall standings for wins, but topping all trainers from an earnings standpoint. Fincher’s 28 winners tallied up more than $934,000 in earnings last season, capped by three-time stakes winner Runaway Ghost, who not only scored victories in the Curribot and Fort Bliss Stakes, but topped his campaign for owner Joe Peacock with a win in the Sunland Park Handicap. Fincher also teamed with owners Dale F. Taylor Racing LLC, Bobby J McQueen & Suzanne Kirby with multiple stakes winner Hustle Up, winner of both the Mine That Bird Derby and Red Hedeman Mile. Fincher’s success carried over to the Downs at Albuquerque, where he finished third in the trainer standings, highlighted by Hustle Up taking the Casino at the Downs Derby and Let It Roll, winner of the Carlos Salazar Stakes for owners R.D. and Shaun Hubbard. Fincher has enjoyed immense success at Zia Park this season as well, winning the New Mexico Classic Cup Oaks with Flight Song, as well as with Peppers Pride Filly and Mare Championship winner Hennessy Express as well as Hustle Up in the Rocky Gulch Classic Cup Championship. Arguably, one of the highlights of Fincher’s career came last year when he saddled Runaway Ghost to victory in the $800,000 Grade 3 Sunland Derby in 2018. Fincher has logged more than 1,060 wins in his career and his horses have earned a staggering $28 million in purse monies. Some of Fincher’s past stakes stars include Smash Dancer, Enchanted Outlaw, Glory Be Mine, Chuchuluco and Queen Greeley.

COPPER TOP FUTURITY21st running to be held Tuesday, April 21, 2020$130,000 Guaranteed • Four & One-Half Furlongs • 2-Year-Olds (TB)

With a quick burst of acceleration out of the gate, Shame On Read and jockey Elvin Gonzalez had the rest of the field at his mercy, running away with a gate-to-wire score in the $149,353 Copper Top Futurity. Sent off as the 2-to-1 post time favorite, Shame On Read broke out of the gate and assumed command quickly, leading his nearest rivals through an opening quarter mile of 22.83 seconds. Gonzalez kept busy at the head of the lane aboard the New Mexico-bred son of Shame On Charlie before distancing himself from the field, crossing the wire 3 lengths in front, completing the 4 1/2 furlongs in a final time of 52.20 seconds. Trained by Dallas Barton and owned by Glenn and Linda Berry, Shame On Read ran third in his career debut here on April 14 when trials for the Copper Top were held. The win places his lifetime earnings at $75,000.

RILEY ALLISON DERBY (Formerly the Riley Allison Futurity)

57th running to be held Sunday, January 26, 2019$100,000 Guaranteed • One Mile • 3-Year-Olds (TB)

Nitrous, trained by Steve Asmussen for the partnership of Winchell Thoroughbreds and Stonestreet Stables, won his two-turn debut when narrowly securing a win in the $106,000 Riley Allison Derby.Sent off as the prohibitive 3-to-5 favorite, Nitrous ($3.20) prevailed under leading jockey Luis Contreras, closing from last to first and outnodding Sheriff Brown at the wire.  Nitrous had established his class as a juvenile with a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga. A Kentucky-bred son Tapit, Nitrous rallied down the center of the course and fought with a resilient Sheriff Brown to win in a photo. He covered the mile on a fast track in 1 minute, 36.98 seconds. Nitrous would go on to place in the Woody Stephens Handicap (Gr. 1) and Belmont Park last summer.

Cutting Humor prevails in $800,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. I I I) thri l ler

Starlight Racing’s Cutting Humor, under an all-out drive from jockey John Velazquez, narrowly edged late-running Anothertwistafate to win Sunday’s 16th running of the $800,000 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) in track record time. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the son of First Samurai ranged up five-wide around the far turn after tracking a quick early pace. A duel between post time favorite Mucho Gusto and Hustle Up saw quick fractions of 22.76 seconds and 45.63 seconds for the opening half-mile.

Cutting Humor, always within striking range, loomed up around the far turn and challenged Mucho Gusto at the head of the lane. After putting that one away, Velazquez kept busy aboard the winner, prevailing by a neck over a fast-charging Anothertwistafate and jockey Juan Hernandez. The margin of victory marks the closest finish in the history of the race.

“The pace of the race was so fast,” Velazquez said in the winner’s circle. “The way he held on there at the end was good experience.”

The final time of 1 minute, 46.94 seconds for the 1 1/8 miles established a new stakes and course record, bettering the old course record of Oh So Regal, who ran the same distance last year in 1 minute, 47.12 seconds.

With the win, Cutting Humor all but assured himself a spot in the starting gate for the 2019 Kentucky Derby. The top four finishers

in the Sunland Derby earn qualifying points for entry into the Run for the Roses. Cutting Humor, with the win, is firmly on the leaderboard with 50 points.

Cutting Humor is a 2-time winner from 6 lifetime starts. He broke his maiden last December at Gulfstream Park West in his final start as a 2-year-old. His victory in the Sunland Derby (Gr. III) adds $460,800 to his lifetime earnings, which now stand at nearly $517,000.

Runner-up Anothertwistafate produced a gallant effort in the Sunland Derby (Gr. III). Trained by Blaine Wright, the son of Scat Daddy added 20 Kentucky Derby points to his career ledger. The second place finish snapped a three-race win streak, which included a victory in the El Camino Real Derby on the tapeta surface at Golden Gate Fields last time out.

After the top pair, it was nearly six lengths back to third place finisher Mucho Gusto, who was sent off as the post time favorite. The Bob Baffert trainee battled the winner briefly at the head of the lane before losing contact with the top pair. By virtue of his third place finish, Mucho Gusto added 10 points to his resume.

Sent off as the second choice in the wagering at odds of 2.30-to-1, Cutting Humor returned $6.60 to his winning backers among the on-track crowd of nearly 17,000 fans. The Sunland Derby card achieved new heights for overall handle. All sources handle on the 12-race program surpassed $4.8 million. The previous record was the 2018 Sunland Derby (Gr. III) card at $4.3 million.

*Because of EHV-1 virus outbreak, the 2016 Sunland Derby (GR III) was canceled and replaced by the Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes. NTR - New Track Record

Chasing Yesterday overcomes tardy start to win $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks

Not even a tardy getaway could prevent Chasing Yesterday from an impressive score in the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks.

The 3-year-old filly by Tapit and a half-sister to 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Chasing Yesterday overcame a hop at the start under jockey Drayden Van Dyke, rallied to contest the leading pair of

Enlisting and K P Slickem down the backstretch, assumed a slim lead around the far turn before opening up on her rivals on her way to a 1 and 1/4 length win for trainer Bob Baffert, who picked up his eighth win in the prestigious event.

Baffert admitted to some nervous moments during the race, particularly after the break.

“She was standing just fine in the gate until the horse next to her moved and she hopped right at the start,” Baffert said. “We had some real nightmares, but she’s such a good filly and her class prevailed.” Baffert has won the Sunland Park Oaks a record eight times.

In addition to the $116,400 paycheck she earned on Sunday, which increases her lifetime winnings to $440,680 for owners Summer Wind Equine, Chasing Yesterday picked up 50 qualifying points in her quest to reach the starting gate for the 2019 Kentucky Oaks.

Chasing Yesterday is a four-time stakes winner. She won the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes last December at Los Alamitos Race Course in her final race as a 2-year-old. She also owns victories in the Desi Arnaz Stakes last fall at Del Mar and the Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita Park. She has won five times from six career starts, her only loss coming last summer in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga. Chasing Yesterday ran the 1 1/16 miles in a final time of 1 minute, 43.18 seconds and returned $2.10 as the overwhelming post time favorite. K P Slickem ran well to hold on for second, just a head in front of Backflash.

*Because of EHV-1 virus outbreak, the 2016 Sunland Park Oaks was canceled and replaced by the Plum Pretty Stakes.

Jessies First Down, one of the greatest Quarter Horses of all-time, went virtually unchallenged in the 2018 Championship at Sunland Park (Gr. I). Under regular pilot Rodrigo Vallejo, the venerable champion turned on the jets in deep stretch to defeat Jess Bein the Hero by an expanding one-length. The 7-year-old gelded son of Fdd Dynasty also won the 2016 Championship at Sunland Park. Before his retirement in 2019, the speed merchant ran out a staggering sum of over $1.6 million in career earnings.
