Bob Anderson, owner of OlDeLights, has been restoring and repairing older and unique light fixtures for almost 25 years. He began his business as an interior decorator and found a passion in light restoration. Ander son phased ou t interior decorating when he realized how much he enjoyed working on repairing antique lighting. Most of the pieces in the shop are dated back to 1850 and are as young as 1950. Candle pieces, gas lamps and electric lighting fixtures can be found at Anderson’s shop. He has converted older pieces into electric lighting fixtures so that they are not just beautiful but they are functional.
OlDeLights has been a staple in maintaining the Victorian image of Cape May. Anderson’s restorative work can be seen throughout Congress Hall and the Physick Estate. Antique lighting can also be found in many of the Bed and Breakfasts and private homes around Cape May. Restorative pieces are of
better quality than newer pieces Anderson stated. “I enjoy seeing the look of surprise on a customer’s face when they see their piece restored to its former glory. Often people walk right by their fixture without knowing it. It is all in perspective. I like seeing the look on someone’s face when they see what I saw all along,” Anderson said.
All lighting is unique. Every piece has been custom
treated based on time period and aesthetics. It was not until after World War ll that lighting became more generic and mass produced. OlDeLights offers expertise in creating unique lighting fixtures. Anderson has taken what some customers refer to as a “frankenlamp,” a lamp with mismatched pieces, and turned it into two separate pieces. The customization is what draws people in, Anderson said.
Many people have come back to the shop hoping to purchase a piece they had seen previously and found themselves disappointed the one-of-a-kind fixture had been sold.
Anderson will be closing the doors of OlDeLights this year. He is hoping to find homes for all of the special fixtures. There is something for everyone including floor and table lamps, chandeliers and sconces. All fixtures are like new and ready to be used. A discount of 35% will be offered November 28th through the 30th as well as a 50% off discount will be available from December 5th until the 7th. All sales will be final. OlDeLights accepts Master Card, Visa, Discover and American Express. Do not wait too long as all pieces are one of a kind.
OlDeLights is located at 678 Washington Street in Cape May. For additional information please call 609-898-0661.
