1) In what ways does your media product, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products?

Page 3: Media Evaluation Question 1

Throughout the course of the year I have researched different music videos , music albums and websites to ensure that when I created my own, they were as realistic and professional as possible. Throughout this research into these different music medias I what was special about each video and how each used the different conventions of music videos, music albums and music websites so that I could ensure I maintained a high level of realism when I created my own. During this power point I will answer how my media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products and I will use my own research as evidence when I need too.

One of the music videos that I analysed during the research stage of my media coursework was “hey brother” by Avicii. While analysing this music video I was looking at the different conventions that It used and how I could use them in my own media product.

One way I conformed to real media products is that I counted how cuts there was throughout the video so that when I was creating my own product I could I would know an estimate of how many is normally used, this way my own music video would have a similar amount of cuts to a real house music video and therefore would hopefully look professional.

a convention that I noticed which was recurring in multiple videos and album artworks while I analysed similar media products was that the house genre in music videos was often associated with the theme of violence and rebellion. In many music videos by artists I analysed I noticed that crime/rebellion was often included to give a certain representation of that artist. In some the crime or violence was used to go along with the lyrics of a song, however it was also used as a way that artist being recognized. One example shown bellow is from the music video by Avicii ‘The nights’, in this video Avicii uses spray paint to show his logo at multiple points throughout the video.

I used this in my own media product however I challenged this theme slightly as rather than using it in my music video, I used in on the website and the album artwork. One of the screenshots bellow show a picture that I have taken and have used for the digipak of the artist. The picture I have taken shows the artist (eXistence) against a wall next to the signature X that is associated with the artist. I used this spray-paint for a Similar reason that Avicii and some other Artists have done throughout my research, this X stands as a logo for the artist and is a way of instantly recognising him in whatever situation is used in. For example it also appears in the music video as well as the website.

INCLUDING A VEHICLE

While analysing “we’ll be coming back” by Calvin Harris I noticed the use of vehicles to go along with the music and sometimes to match the beat, for example when the music is fast there would be a shot of the bike, and while the music is slower a shot of something else was shown. I used this in the process of creating our music video and when the music was fast I used a shot of the bike. To challenge this however I did not include the bike as part of the narrative and used it along side the narrative that I already used in the video about the girl and the boy.

Using the bike also allowed us match the speed of the music to the speed of the bike so that the tempo of the music normally matched with what was going on in the video.

USING THE ARTIST WITHIN THE VIDEO

Using the artist himself within the video is another way that our production is similar to real media products. From our research we noticed cases that the artist was used in the video to show him off as the “Star” and to ensure that he would not be forgotten within the narrative story. This links to Richard Dyers’s star theory as the artist in the video is the star/product so he must be seen throughout the duration of the video.

In Tiesto’s red light video you see Tiesto throughout the video preparing for a concert in Vegas, our video however challenges this slightly and shows the artist (eXistence) travelling to the location of the photo-shoot.

USING THE LOGO IN THE ALBUM ARTWORK

From all of my research into different artists music videos, websites and albums I noticed a recurring use of logos throughout all productions. The logo for all the artists that I have looked into has always been important and is used in most products they create. One example as show bellow is the use of the logo on the album cover. As you can see bellow I have used this on a greater scale than Avicii has on his album cover and this is so that eXistence is instantly recognisable whenever anyone looks at it.

Another example of this which I have also use is by including the logo on merchandise. Many artists use there logo on merchandise such as phone cases and T shirts, which as you can see bellow I have also used as a way of recognising the artist, without having a picture of him on the shirt/ case itself.
