CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?

MY MUSIC VIDEOMy music video is conventional due to the genre of the song. It is a pop rock song with a serious message behind it and I believe the music video reflects the message in the song rather well.

The camera shots are also conventional, using a variety of long shots, medium shots and close ups. I’m proud of the various shots I used, including a birds eye view during the running down the stairs sequence. I tried to attempt a tracking shot for one scene but I was limited in equipment. Instead I used a panning shot.

The editing was also conventional in terms of having a sequence of fast/medium paced cuts. However, some may argue that the cloning effect used in the video may be developing the conventions of typical music videos. It’s an interesting visual effect to keep the audience intrigued but also shows how the girl cannot see her conscience (she is invisible to her). This visual is also used in high end music videos, which may have been seen as challenging due to the limit on production and technology available.

The scene where the girl storms out of the classroom was not purposely slowed down but done to create a symbolic signifier that the girl feels that world has slowed down for her as everyone seems to be against her. This may be seen as slightly challenging the conventions of music videos as usually the pace is very fast and there is hardly has any slow motion.

The mise-en-scene of the music video was taken into consideration before the filming. I made sure that the conscience’s outfit was light and the normal girl’s outfit was dark to create a symbolic signifier of their personalities and moods. The girl character also wears a leather jacket as it is an item clothing the real artist (P!NK) would normally be seen in, so it is something familiar for the audience to recognise. The wall of the bedroom was also covered with pictures and magazine cuttings. This was to show that she is an average teenage girl but also to reflect her personality and worries. Also, the audience will identify this a typical stereotype of what teenage girls might do.

MY DIGIPACK

The digipack is quite conventional in terms of the artist being the main focus of it, being on the front cover with the pink font. However, some people have said it might be challenging conventions because of the effect on the artists images, which is called holgra-ish. I argue though that it is hard to be completely conventional with a digipack as there aren’t many set rules with digipacks unlike music videos. In some cases they may even be controversial so more people draw attention to it. Plus, this idea was original drawn up from an existing product (Snow Patrol Final Straw album), so I wouldn’t call my product unconventional.

MUSIC POSTERMy music poster is conventional. I used the image from the front cover of the digipak for the poster to ensure that audiences noticed the link between the album and advert. I feel that this way, the advert is working more effectively to advertise the product. The text is also conventional on the poster with information about the digipack and pull quotes from a music magazine.
