Page 1: Media evaluation

In what ways does your media product use and

develop or challenge forms and conventions of real

media products?

Page 2: Media evaluation

• With my media product I initially attempted to follow the conventions, but I came to realise that the conventions of a teen drama are hard to pin down. It’s easy to identify a teen drama e.g. The age of the characters tend to give it away, with my teaser trailer you can see that both characters are teenagers without there even being any dialogue and once you get into the teaser trailer you recognise the root of the problem is to do with some form education (college) and this is another main convention of teen drama the idea that the plot is set around academics. I wanted to give the audience and insight of the characters relationship and what is happening to it briefly I especially wanted to focus on the impact that the downfall of the relationship is having on one character particularly.

Another convention that I followed was the whole idea of the characters being relatable to this was done in both the trailers I analysed that followed conventions uniquely . As you can see from both images you can see they’re the main focused characters this is the case in both my Frienemies teaser trailer and the Superbad teaser trailer. But from each image you can see the contrasting body languages of the characters the character to the right who’s being focused on seems as though he’s trying to make an effort (express them self) and seems quite passionate or annoyed whilst the image to the left seems like a less heated conversation and just seems chilled out.

With the release date of my film I decided to go with the not setting a release date to make the audience want to know more. I went with a pitch black background to resemble the kidulthood titling the colours resemble the atmosphere in the teaser.

• Instead of focusing on a group of friends teen drama I decided to focus on two characters one particularly ,I did this because it made it clear to the audience who the main character was. By doing this I used the same image of the main character in both my magazine front cover and film poster this enabled me to get the point out there to the audience that he was the character with the most significance.

• With the settings in the teaser trailer I also followed the conventions of a teen drama, the two settings we see both characters in college and the characters talking outside a block of flats. I decided to make the storyline realistic which again is a convention of a teen dramas, but with props I decided to use none whatsoever so here I aborted the idea of following conventions of a teen drama.

• In my teaser trailer I decided to use slow paced music but it was the type of music which was aimed to spark nostalgic, regretful feelings. In contrast to the kidulthood trailer which was rapidly paced with the characters and settings changing constantly I decided to not follow this idea and decided to focus on 2 characters and the relationship. Although the Superbad trailer was slower paced it pushed the idea of a bunch of teenage boys getting up to no good and doing what it takes to be seen as ‘cool’
