In this essay I will be discussing the ownership of Media ownership I will refer to my case study on the film companies, warp, working titles and vertigo, some of which are mini majors and some independent along with referring to the conglomerate universal during this essay. Some of the key issues among ownership are control, profitability, distribution and funding, these issues can be very serious as the success of a company and a film can hang on some of these issues. Independent film companies such as vertigo, would struggle with distribution because due to lack of funds it is hard to get films out there, through advertising and due to a niche audience the revenue and profit from films is substantially lower than that of a conglomerate and so is their budget, whereas with a conglomerate they likely have their own distribution company so, they don’t have to sell their idea nor would they struggle with funds, a conglomerate such as universal would over shadow adverts from conglomerates on social media, if a film is not properly distributed then it will likely not be very successful in the box office at generating profit. Another issue is creative control, due to the niche audience of independent company such as warp films their ideas are not very restricted like those of a conglomerate as they don’t have to appeal to the masses, this means they would have far greater creative control than a conglomerate, however due to this, there will be restricted profits as it is a small or niche market appeal, whereas with conglomerates like universal follow a more, conventional film outline and plot to keep appeal up and bring in high levels at the box office and profit. Another issue is profitability, due to companies such as warp films being independent they have much more niche and creative films, these films are not solely aimed at making profit, meaning there are smaller markets this means that their profit compared to a conglomerate such as universal is very restricted, this means some films may not bring in any profit and may actually loose them money,

Another issue is profitability, due to companies such as warp films being independent they have much more niche and creative films, these films are not solely aimed at making profit, meaning there are smaller markets this means that their profit compared to a conglomerate such as universal is very restricted, this means some films may not bring in any profit and may actually loose them money, whereas with a conglomerate they are far less likely to be at a loss because there is a much more large and varied target market meaning they will likely appeal to more people.

The last issue is funding, companies such as warp films which are independent, will find sourcing funds much more difficult in some respects as they will have less of their own funds, they will also struggle because they have less of a good reputation than conglomerates, however due to creativity they can get crowd funded or spotted which will lead to funding, this is not however an option for conglomerates really, however conglomerates, have a good reputation and are known for films which do well so can much more easily get a loan and failing that they are likely to have their own funds to use on top of that, or their own distribution companies if funding is an issue, films success can be greatly affected, and negatively, as films will not be distributed as well.

Over all I would say that the issues discussed are a huge problem and much more so for the independent film companies, meaning that the future of independent films could be very bleak, on top of this I think it is almost unfair as Conglomerates easily overshadow and almost destroy independent film companies despite the rise in independent content Creators in more recent years, they will struggle to distribute and get their films seen, despite the exceptional quality Story and entertainment value along with creativity.
