Delhi: Jail inmates battle stigma with vision 1st September'19

Pushpa spent her childhood in jail. But that did

not stop her from dreaming of a better future.

Today, the 20-year-old girl is pursuing a

company secretary course. After being taught at

a special school arranged for her by the India

Vision Foundation, Pushpa has managed to piece

together a new life. She has also become an

inspiration for several others, including some

inmates. Over 25 years, the foundation, which

was set up by former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, has

helped more than 2.5 lakh inmates and their

children leave behind the stigma of a life in jail.

“I was a child when I went to the jail with my

parents. I have lived through the trauma of

staying behind bars. When I was admitted to a

school and grew up, I decided to undo whatever

stigma my parents had gathered,” said Pushpa.

In 2001, Pushpa was admitted to a private school, and she topped in her class XII examinations.

Bedi recalls that the idea to set up the India Vision Foundation was concieved while she was heading

the Tihar prisons in Delhi. “I had found thousands of children of inmates and youngsters, who were

jailed for crimes, running into depression due to the environment on the jail premises. We pushed for

reforms in an organised way. We started engaging with children, set up schools within the jail, and

assisted the children and the youngsters in achieving their goals,” she said. Apart from offering

education, the foundation has also been providing training for inmates who are interested in

performing arts and other jobs.

“Jail‟s life sends you into depression and isolates you from the rest of the world. Music brought me

back to the life,” said 22-year-old Ankush. The mechanical engineer has been jailed for committing

street crimes. Even though he is escorted by guards when he steps out to practise, Ankush now calls

the jail to be his new workplace.

Rakesh, a manager with a multinational company in Haryana, was released from a jail a year back.

He was arrested on fraud charges. “I am a trained musician now, and I keep going back through the

gates to train other inmates. They also go through the same trauma that I suffered when I went

behind bars.”

On Saturday, more than 100 inmates, beneficiaries and prison officials from different jails across

Delhi and NCR had gathered to celebrate the silver jubilee of the India Vision Foundation.

25 years on, Kiran Bedi’s bid to help convicts’ children going strong 1st September'19

At the 25th year celebration of Kiran Bedi’s India Vision Foundation Saturday afternoon, former

convicts, families of convicts currently serving terms, and teachers with the foundation spoke about

the impact of its projects.

The 38-year-old woman was due to deliver a

baby in a month when she was convicted in a

dowry case in 2001. She gave birth to a baby

girl, but inside Tihar Jail. “The girl is now in

Class XII and goes to a private school. When she

turned three, India Vision Foundation put her in

a girls‟ hostel and changed her life,” said the

woman with a hint of pride in her voice.

The former convict, who now runs a tailoring

business in South Delhi, was a part of the 25th

year celebration of Kiran Bedi‟s foundation

Saturday afternoon. Former convicts, families of

convicts currently serving terms, and teachers with the foundation spoke about the impact of its

projects.

Bedi said, “The idea of IVF came to my mind during my stint at Tihar Jail. Children of convicts had

nothing to do, there were no schools for them. We began by arranging a playroom for them, and

from there the project grew.”

At the event, a teacher who is a part of the foundation said, “These children come from broken

families and we have to fill that gap.” A 14-year-old boy, whose mother is currently serving a term,

spoke about the hostel and the school he now goes to. “My mother went to prison when I was just

one year old. My sister found out about the foundation and I was enrolled in school,” he said.

Bedi served as the Inspector General of Delhi Prisons from 1993-95 and is currently L-G, Puducherry.

IVF‟s other projects include Dhun, in which convicts are provided music training. The event ended

with a musical performance by police personnel and former convicts, who had been trained under the

project.

Kiran Bedi’s NGO celebrates 25 years of changing lives 1st September'19

A unique initiative ‘Creche Curriculum’ was also launched by Bedi, which has been developed by the

NGO to provide a standardised curriculum for children living inside prisons.

Life has taken a radical change in the last

decade for Pushpa, who was part of a child

education program started by NGO- India

Vision Foundation (IVF), founded by

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Kiran

Bedi.

“I was part of the creche started by the

foundation. After receiving basic education,

many of us were given the opportunity to

pursue higher studies and were sent to SSC

school in Noida...Our founder and other

members kept me motivated throughout,”

said Pushpa who is now an employee at Institute of Banking and Finance.

Like Pushpa, there are scores of other individuals who have undergone reform practices put in place

by the NGO in the prisons of multiple states across the country.

Here, on Saturday, the IVF celebrated its 25th foundation day at Air Force Auditorium. Founder

Kiran Bedi graced the event as the special guest.

At the event, a special musical was held by inmates of Rohtak prison, who were trained to play

musical instruments under the „Dhun‟ program of the NGO.

“When I look back and ponder about how IVF was born, how we started in a very humble manner,

we have travelled a long way and have been able to touch the lives of over 2,50,000 individuals. Our

endeavour though is to reach out further and transform more lives”

said Bedi.

Robin, one of the Rohtak prison inmates, said Bedi is like a mother to him, “She has changed my life

completely, I hopefully will meet my biological mother one day but she (Bedi) has nurtured and

taken care of us,” said Robin.

A unique initiative „Creche Curriculum‟ was also launched by Bedi, which has been developed by the

NGO to provide a standardised curriculum for children living inside prisons.
