The main image is very weird, even for fans of the band Gorillaz and as a result, those who didn’t previously know about the band will be intrigued and would go to the page with the article on (pg 44) which is displayed in big text at the bottom of the picture.

By writing articles about popular celebrities that aren’t particularly doing anything at the time, the issue attracts interest from the fans and could generate loyalty to the magazine because they don’t get attention from other media like TV or other magazines.

By entitling these articles “Regulars” the magazine implies to readers that the formats of these articles are popular with other readers in turn suggest that the magazine is popular and successful, and would make them more likely to buy the magazine because they have perceived the magazine in this way.

Most of the articles have a picture relating to them on the page; this gives the reader just a little bit more information allowing them to pick which article they would be interested in reading, making the magazine easier to navigate than if there were no pictures.

The very simple red, black and white colour scheme used on the page does not distract from the purpose of the magazine, but still looks attractive and is effective, making it easy for the reader to take in the pages.

Page 2: Media contents

All the main articles are clearly displayed down the right hand side of the page, making the articles stand out and means the reader can very quickly and easily skim across the page and find articles that would interest them.

By marking the cover stories on the contents page by separating the markings from the rest of the issue by giving them their own column, the reader can immediately find the article they wanted to read about after seeing it on the cover (which could have been the only reason why they brought the issue).

Here, the magazine offers the reader to save a large amount of money as a result of buying the issue. This is likely to work and would also encourage the reader to get their friends to buy it as well, and by offering it once, others would hear about it and would buy future issues hopping to get the same offer.

Here, the magazine offers a little bit of (in this case novelty*) news. By offering a little bit of news, the reader will be encouraged to read on to find out more news of a similar nature and so would read on.

*Novelty because the band in question are a rock band and it is unlike them to place an acoustic set.

By listing all the bands featured in this issue, it again makes the page easy to just skim over to find articles that would interest them.

The amount of text here and how it is very clearly set up in a grid, gives the impression that the magazine is very serious, professional and almost refined. This also sets the tone of the magazine suggesting that (this issue at least) is going to be serious and possibly sensitive.

The main image is very serious and almost how the artist’s face is partly covered by shadow. This connotes that the artist is not the usual outrageous, controversial self, but is instead in a very dark place. By depicting him like this, the reader would want to know why he doesn’t look how they expect him to do, in turn encouraging them to read on.

By typing the names of big acts in bold and italics, the readers’ attention it drawn to the text that doesn’t follow the pattern of the rest of the page. Likewise, the yellow capital letters used in the headers also draws attention to the area, enticing the reader.

A lot of rhetorical questions are used in the tag lines in the text. This directly engages with the reader, attracting their interest and makes them feel like the editor/ creators of the magazine are talking to them which could make them feel appreciated which in turn could create a sense of loyalty towards the magazine.

The list of No.1 on the left hand side of the page makes the magazine easy to navigate. The actual chart itself is also very clear so is easy to read.

The format of this contents page is the exact same in very issue of billboard just with different content. This again makes the page easy to navigate, especially to those who buy the magazine regularly.

The pictures are all likely to appeal to the target audience because the artists are portrayed to be cool and/or performing on stage, enticing the readers to read the relevant articles. They can also do this easily because the page number is in the bottom left corner of each picture.

The relatively small amount of text on page makes the page easy to read (manageable) and also encourages the audience to read on because they do not offer a lot of information on this page.

By advertising their presence in other media forms like “Online” the magazine is more likely to appeal to a wider audience; for example the parson may prefer to learn about the latest news on the internet because it can be updated instantly. Here, the magazine notifies the reader about events occurring in

the music industry. This would appeal to their target audience because they would want to know about gigs they could go to. This could also create a sense of loyalty because the readers can rely on the magazine to keep them up to date with the latest events happening in the near future.

The picture relates to the target audience because it shows a live event something that the reader would want/wanted to go to. Either way, they would want to read the relevant report to know what the magazine thought about the event, enticing the reader.

There is a very clear, simple colour scheme on this page; yellow is used on the headings making them standout in turn meaning the reader can straight away see the most important things on the page.

There is a very clear format on the page; they have the heading in tallow text, then the sub headings follow in black, bold font followed by the next heading and so on. This again makes the page easy to navigate.

The magazine labels which articles on the cover on this page by marking them with a star (and “cover story” written on them). This means that the reader can easily find what they are looking for if the brought the issue solely because of an article advertised on the cover.

Here, the deputy editor has written a short statement about this issue. By directly addressing the reader, they would feel like they are being talked to and would feel almost included in the issue. This would also possibly increase the loyalty of the readers, encouraging them to buy the next issue because it gives off a friendly vibe.

The splat here does two things; firstly it attract attention to the area of the page because it is a feature that the magazine thins will appeal to a lot of their target audience, but secondly connotes rebellion which is what rock music is mainly about.
