Splashy Sea Lions

The sea lions that camped out in PIER 39’s West Marina have been an international sensation for more than 25 years. A few California sea lions began “hauling out” in PIER 39’s West Marina shortly after the 1989 San Francisco Loma Prieta earthquake. The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves and took over K-Dock in January 1990. At first they numbered from 10-50, but due to a plentiful herring supply, the available dock space and protective environment, the population soon grew to more than 300 within a couple of months. The Marine Mammal Center, an organization devoted to the rescue and rehabilitation of marine mammals and the study of these animals’ health, advised PIER 39 that the sea lions should be allowed to stay. As a result, The Marine Mammal Center and PIER 39 have worked together for the last two decades to ensure the health and well being of PIER 39’s sea lion population. An educational program was also developed to educate visitors and school groups about these marine mammals. In November 2009, a record number of sea lions were counted on K-Dock (1,701 to be exact!), but later that same month, their numbers quickly dwindled. By December 2009, only a handful of sea lions were hauled out on K-Dock. Researchers at The Marine Mammal Center attributed their departure to a shift in their food source that caused the population to travel to other regions in their normal range including the Oregon Coast to feed. However, the California sea lions slowly began migrating back to PIER 39, much to the delight of locals and tourists who gather from all over the world to watch the playful mammals. You can watch the sea lions from wherever you are around the world! Visit the Sea Lion section on pier39,com to check out the Sea Lion Webcam. EXPLORE THE BAY Aquarium of the Bay brings you up close and personal with sharks, rays, jellies and 20,000 other aquatic animals, as well as some land-dwelling creatures. Walk through 300 feet of crystal-clear tunnels as local aquatic animals swim overhead. View graceful gliding moon jellies and pacific sea nettles, and enjoy hands-on animal interactions with leopard sharks, sea stars, rays, skates, turtles and others. Visitors can also participate in special presentations at the Bay Lab, an interactive climate change exhibit, and check out shark feeding presentations and other special activities. In 2013, three North American river otters joined Aquarium of the Bay for Otters: Watershed Ambassadors, which features the animals in a recreation of their natural habitat. The Sea Lions camped out in PIER 39’s West Marina have been endearingly coined PIER 39’s “Sea Lebrities.” The boisterous barking pinnipeds started arriving in droves in January 1990, shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake. At first they numbered from ten to 50, but due to a plentiful herring supply, available dock space and the marina’s protective environment, the population grew to more than 300 within a few months. During the summer months, the sea lions migrate south to the Channel Islands for breeding season, but a small group stays year-round at PIER 39’s K-Dock. If you’re looking to learn more about the California sea lions, visit the Sea Lion Center, located on Level 2 of PIER 39, above K-Dock. The Sea Lion Center, operated and managed by Aquarium of the Bay, is a hub for all things sea lion, including interactive displays, educational videos and many fascinating presentations led by Aquarium of the Bay Naturalists. Touch a sea lion pelt, size yourself up next to a real sea lion skeleton and more.

Blue & Gold Fleet Wins The 2014 Roger Murphy National Marine Safety Award

SAN FRANCISCO – (March 5, 2014) – Blue & Gold Fleet was awarded the 2014 Roger Murphy National Marine Safety Award at the Passenger Vessel Association’s conference in Texas. This award recognizes companies who demonstrate safety in the marine environment, and embody the principles and techniques of the safety training required in the passenger vessel industry. Blue & Gold Fleet’s company-wide safety management system has resulted in the safe transportation of 2.8 million passengers who ride both the ferry and excursions services on the San Francisco Bay, one of the most congested inland waterways in the country.

“This recognition is what our mission at Blue & Gold is all about and what we spend hours of practice and training on,” said Carolyn Horgan, President of Blue & Gold Fleet. “We have proudly created a proactive safety culture.” This became evident in the summer and fall of 2013, when the San Francisco Bay Area endured two transit strikes and a five-day closure of the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge. During those 13 days, Blue & Gold Fleet had 18 vessels in operation and carried over 200,000 passengers, an increase of three times the normal load, and all without incident.

"This company-wide reduction of incidents and claims cannot be attributed to any one person, but reflects Blue & Gold employees’ commitment to safety, “ said Director of Operations Patrick Murphy.

The award, established in 2003, is named after the late Roger Murphy, a long-time proponent of marine safety and training, and founder of the precursor to the Passenger Vessel Association Safety and Security Committee. Roger Murphy was also the founder of Blue & Gold Fleet.

About Blue & Gold Fleet Blue & Gold Fleet is the premier provider of ferry and water excursion services on San Francisco Bay, offering the famous one-hour Bay Cruise Adventure, 90-minute Escape from the Rock cruise and RocketBoat, the ultimate high-speed thrill ride along the city’s waterfront. PIER 39 Welcomes Open Heart to the Bay End of The PIER SAN FRANCISCO – (July 14, 2014) – PIER 39 is excited to announce the unveiling of their newest piece of art, Open Heart, which will be permanently located on Level 1 at the picturesque Bay End of PIER 39. Open Heart is part of San Francisco General Hospital Foundation’s 2014 “Hearts in San Francisco” collection that supports the vital programs and initiatives of San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

“PIER 39 is iconic to San Francisco, as are the hearts that we see throughout the city,” said Sue Currin, CEO of The General. “Each year, artists create new hearts to support the city’s only trauma center. We are thrilled to have this heart on display here, and to welcome PIER 39 into our family of corporate sponsors. It is through their generous support that San Francisco General Hospital Foundation is able to fund vital programs and initiatives at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.”

Open Heart was hand-painted by local artist Patrick Dintino, a San Francisco native whose mother’s life was saved more than a decade ago by open heart surgery. “Open Heart represents the larger idea of love and understanding self-concept—of opening our hearts and seeing what’s inside, what makes us tick,” said Dintino. “It symbolizes the openness of our city’s heart, as well as the idea of falling in love with and leaving your heart in San Francisco.”

San Francisco General Hospital Foundation is currently accepting artist submissions for the 2015 “Hearts in San Francisco” series. Design renderings may be submitted online at sfghf.net by the Friday, August 1, 2014 deadline.

About “Hearts in San Francisco” The city-wide public art project, ‘Hearts in San Francisco’ was introduced in 2004, featuring 130 five-foot tall heart sculptures designed by local and national established and emerging artists. The unique works of art were featured in plazas, parks and on street corners throughout San Francisco. To conclude the public art display, hearts were auctioned and sold with proceeds benefitting SFGHF and its efforts to fund projects and initiatives that provide quality care at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Since then, more than 100 hearts have been created to benefit programs at The General.
