HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER Goals of the Library Media Center Orientation Learn the arrangement of the library media center and what is located in each section. Identify specific parts of books and print materials. Understand expectations and procedures in the media center as a student at Hialeah Gardens High School. Anabel Parra, Media Specialist 4. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER What will this presentation do for you? This presentation is designed to help you become familiar with the library media center at Hialeah Gardens High School. You will have a chance to review information that you already know as well as learn new things. There are question and answer slides for you to practice that tests your library knowledge. The story is imaginary, even if it is based on something that might have happened, or people who may have existed. Fiction is pretend. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 7. This is an example of a book that is part of the fiction collection. The call letter on the spine is F for Fiction. What is true about a book in the fiction section? Fiction contains: (choose the best answer) 1. Details about a persons life it could be the authors life or the life of someone else. 2. They are about things that are real. Non-fiction books can be about people, about places, about things they can be history or geography, arts & crafts, weather, music, sports, recipe books, even science fair projects or dinosaurs . . . HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 11. This is a non-fiction book. It contains text and photographs that examine the creation and uses of rocks and minerals. Non-fiction often teaches you how to do things as well as providing details on a topic. What describes a non-fiction book best? 1. Non-fiction books are made-up. Not real. 2. There are more pictures in non-fiction at Hialeah Gardens Media Center than there are words. 3. You must have a pass signed by your teacher in order to use the LMC when you are not with one of your teachers. Make sure Ms. Parra signs your pass when you leave. 2. As in any classroom, no food, drinks, gum, and electronic devices are permitted. 3. Please work quietly so you dont disturb other students in the LMC. 4. You must have a pass during lunch to enter the LMC. 5. Always use the main entrance to enter and leave the LMC. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 15. Library Media Center Fines: There is a five cents per day per book fine for late books please return your books on time for others to use. Or renew your books BEFORE they are due! You will be charged the total cost for lost or damaged books. The fine will be assessed according to the damage and price of the book. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 16. Hours and Checkout of Materials: The Library Media Center is open from 7:10 a.m. 2:30 p.m. You need a pass from a teacher in order to visit the library during lunch. You may check out 2 books for 2 weeks at a time. You may renew your books twice. You may print from computers (if available). Cost to print is 10 cents per page, black & white. 50 cents per page to print in color. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 17. Review Hours and Checkout of Materials: The Media Center is open from: 7:10 a.m. 2:30 p.m. Monday Friday After school time TBA. You may check-out 2 books at a time for 2 weeks. You may use the media center during lunch but must have a pass from a teacher. You may print from computers: 10 cents per page in black & white or 50 cents per page in color. You may use the copier for: 15 cents per page (even back to back). HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 18. Biography biography (b- g r -f ) n. a biography is the written history of a persons life. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 19. This book is an account of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is written, composed, and produced by another person. Biographies have the call number 92 followed by the persons last name. This books call number is 92 KING. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 20. A biography is a resource that contains: 1. Information about a persons death certificate, not about the persons life. 2. Facts and photos about a place or time in history, not about people. 3. Description of a persons life; the who, what, when, where, and (maybe even the) how concerning the person the book is about. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 21. Reference Books ref"er*ence ('re-f rn(t)s n. a work (such as a dictionary, encyclopedia, almanac or atlas) containing useful facts or information. The call number is R followed by the first three letters of the title of the work. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 22. What are reference books? Reference books usually remain in the library they are not available for check out. Almanacs, Atlases, Calculation & Conversion Tools, Calendars, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Periodical Directories, Style & Writing Guides, Telephone & Address Guides, and more. Call number R in their own reference section of the LMC. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 23. What are reference books? 1. They are books you check out for pleasure reading. 2. Reference books are usually collections of information, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases or almanacs. 3. Reference books are rarely checked out because we have most online through Destiny. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 24. Periodical (periodical) pr-d- -kl n. A publication issued at regular intervals of more than one day. Some periodicals are published every week, some every month, others every two months or even once or twice each year. They are produced regularly. You know them as magazines. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 25. Popular periodicals come in many styles and are fun to look at. Lots of graphics (photographs, drawings, etc.). Articles are usually short, written in simple language. The purpose of periodicals (sometimes called magazines) is to entertain the reader, to sell products, and/or to promote a viewpoint. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 26. What are periodicals? 1. Periodicals usually have very long, very difficult to read articles in them. 2. This type of material is published one time, unless there is a revised copy published at a later date. 3. Popular periodicals come in many formats, often pleasing to look at. The purpose of popular periodicals is to entertain the reader. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 27. Periodicals (magazines) cannot be checked out. However, once a month, the older issues are placed on top of a long desk by the front door, you may: TAKE THESE HOME FOREVER! FREE!!! The catalog is called DESTINY and that is where you can look for books and eBooks found in the HGHS Media Center. Databases are collections of information arranged for ease and speed of search and retrieval. HIALEAH GARDENS MEDIA CENTER 29. Electronic Resources (available in the library, classroom & home) Destiny: A catalog of books & materials for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Search for Hialeah Gardens Senior High School under HIGH SCHOOLS, and right-click, highlight Create Short-cut and click, OK.
