How Effective is the combination of your main product and

ancillary texts?

Richard Dyer’s theory of “star image”

• The term “Star” refers to the semi-mythological set of meanings constructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience

• An example of a star includes acts like maddona

Dyer’s theory

• Dyer says that there are two paradoxes. 1) the star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary for the consumer and 2) the star must be simultaneously present and absent for the consumer.

• Some common values of stardom include youthfulness, rebellion and sexual magnetism.

Our Star Image• Our target audience is 16-25. They are a new and upcoming band, they appear very normal and organic towards the target audience. The band will have a very youthful and unique style. However as they all wear black it conveys a sense of rebellion. We have created three products to show there star image in the form of a Pop video, a digipak and a magazine advert.

Our Digipak- Our album cover fits the

theme/atmospheric look we have for our poster and throughout our music video.

- This photograph particularly emphasises the the band and the sense of mystery behind the band, especially as the lights mean you cant see their eyes properly which makes you feel inquisitive about them.

-This photograph particularly highlights the youthfulness and appearance of the band. We have them all dressed in black which gives a sense of rebellion

Back Page- The back page of the

album also has a similar connotation as the sense of youth and mystery our present.

- It also fits with Dyers paradox that a star must be simultaneously present and absent to the consumer. Although we can see a picture of the band we cannot see them properly and the back cover only shows us the back of them which makes them absent.

Digipak continued…

• The inside of our digipak conveys a sense of mystery.

• It also gives a fairytale like feel to the band which makes them extra-ordinary. However the shots of them playing together makes them appear normal therefore sticking to Dyer’s other paradox that a star must be simultaneously ordinary and extraordinary to the consumer.

Our Magazine Advert• The magazine advert is fits the

theme of the first single, and the single’s music video.

• This image and layout represents the band as rebellious and mysterious and is the same picture that we used for the front cover.

• The artificial lighting also shows that the band are a bit different and we are presenting them as having something more than other bands.

Our Pop Video

• We used our third product to show that the band were easy to relate to as they are just normal people but that they are more than normal as they are in a mysterious location.

• It also shows the band are youthful and rebellious.

Pop Video cont.

• It has a fairytale theme to it the trail of light bulbs and the mysterious girl add that element.

• Some bands which I think have a similar look/brand to our band include white lies:

They have a similar look as they all wear black to give them a mysterious edge. They are also quite young and therefore attract the same target audience as out band
