Riding on the digitization drive, direct‐to‐home (DTH) operators such as Dish TV and Tata
Sky have hiked their pan‐India tariff by over 10 percent.
This increase which spans across all packs and regions including South India has been
initiated after the second phase of digitization which started on 31st March covering 38 citieswith a population of more than 1 million. Dish TV has hiked its set‐top box prices twice in
February and with this increase in monthly subscription fees, it is expecting average revenue
per user to touch INR 180 next fiscal. Tata Sky has also increased its base tariff by at least 10
percent without making any formal announcement. DTH players argue that it was not possible to sustain high operating cost involved in DTH services and were forced to pass on
some part of service tax component to subscribers.
