FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP – MEDIA INFORMATION

Rallycross is head-to-head short, sharp racing on mixed surfaces (dirt and asphalt) contained within

amphitheatre venues. High profile drivers are equipped with RX Supercars with over 600bhp and

the ability to accelerate from 0-60mph in less than two seconds – faster than an F1 car. Race

meetings include four action-packed qualifying heats (Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4) with the most successful

drivers progressing through to semi-finals and a final.

HISTORY OF RALLYCROSS

Rallycross was invented by Robert Reed, who was the producer on ITV’s World of Sport programme

at the time. The first event took place at Lydden Hill on 4 February back in 1967, where it quickly

became a staple of Saturday afternoon sports in the UK with both ITV and BBC broadcasting

rallycross. The popularity of rallycross soon spread, with the first event on the European mainland

held in Holland in 1969, with the Scandinavian rallycross debut taking place in Sweden two years

later.

FIA WORLD RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP – MEDIA INFORMATION

The FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy debuted World RX debuted in

2014 with a calendar including events in Argentina, Turkey, Canada and throughout Europe.

Building on the success of World RX’s first five seasons and the burgeoning momentum behind the

series, the 2019 calendar will incorporate 10 rounds across four continents. Along the way, it will visit

some of the world’s most historic rallycross tracks, while introducing two exciting new challenges in

the shape of Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit and the legendary Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in

Belgium. Following its successful debut last year, Silverstone’s Speedmachine Festival returns on May

25-26.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

ABOUT RALLYCROSS

Each event is made up of open practice sessions, four rounds of timed qualifying

races, two knock out semi-finals and one final. The qualifying races are run over four

laps with a maximum of five cars starting abreast.

Note that this year marks the introduction of Reverse Grids in Q2 and Q3. A draw will

beforehand.

- Q2. Race starters determined according to timed classification of Q1, but could

be reversed as described above. This follows the same format until Q3, with Q4

reverting to the timed classification of Q3.

After the qualifying races, there will be an Intermediate Classification according to

each driver’s total points scored in the four qualifiers

SEMI-FINALS

There will be six starters arranged on a two-by-two grid and each semi-final will be

run over six laps. The top 12 scoring drivers in the intermediate classification will

qualify for the semi-finals. The winner, second and third placed drivers in each semi-

final will qualify for the final.

FINALS

Finals will also have six starters, arranged over three rows and will be run over six

laps.

The semi-final winner with the highest number of points in the event will start on the

‘pole’ side of the grid, followed by the other semi-final winner. The same procedure

will be used between the two second-placed drivers and two third-placed drivers.

The winner of the final will be the winner of the event. Positions one to six in the final

classification will be according to the result of the final. The remaining drivers will be

ABOUT COOPER TIRES

Cooper Tire Europe is sole tyre supplier and Associate Partner to World RX. The company

has a very long and extremely successful history in the rallycross arena and is the

rallycross tyre of choice for competitors across the world, having supplied tyres to

European Rallycross Champions for the past two decades.

Cooper’s supremacy is thanks to its unique rallycross tyre composition, which offers

unrivalled levels of grip and traction on both tarmac and gravel, to provide the best all-

round performance. For competitors to tackle the changing surfaces, from tarmac to

gravel, they need a tyre which is capable of handling both rough and smooth surfaces.

Meeting this unique challenge is something that Cooper excels at and particularly

prides itself on www.coopertire.com

A rallycross tyre needs to have several elements to cope with the demands placed on it. It

needs a pattern that conforms to the technical regulations and a compound suitable for both

gravel and asphalt surfaces. It needs a complex construction that gives unrivalled

performance with the strength to take the punishment that these surfaces give when tackled

with a 600bhp car. Unsurprisingly, this isn’t easy!
