It is pleasure to release this issue (2017/18, issue 2) of department e-newsletter. As

usual, this semester was also full of good activities and events. Every year between 12 to

18 February, National Productivity Week is celebrated across the nation by National

Productivity Council (NPC), New Delhi. Mechanical Engg. Detp. Took initiative to celebrate

the same. This year’s theme was “Industry 4.0, Leapfrog Opportunity for India” and very

appropriately, M.E. (Industrial Engineering) students help us organize this event.

Expert talk was organized by ASME student section. The expert invited for this session was Prof. Sukritindra

soni, Assistant professor in Department of Mechanical engineering, GCET who brings his views and

experiences for cracking GATE exam. Topic of discussion was, What is GATE and Why GATE is necessary,

its Importance (like getting jobs in PSU‟s through gate and admission to master‟s program in premier

institutes of India like IISC, IITs, NIT,s and foreign universities in Singapore and Germany). By this program

students got to know about Question paper pattern, marking schemes, subject wise analysis, cut off marks,

weightage, and time. How to prepare and crack exam with good rank, eventually students brought with

them.

An alumni talk for the third year undergraduate students of Mechanical Engineering department was held on

2nd March 2018, in the room no A 306 form 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Speaker: Anas Sayyed (12 batch

student) ,is currently pursuing M.Tech from IIT, Gnadhinagar. Topic of talk was „Study culture in an IIT‟ Anas

talked about the study culture at IIT and how it is different from that in a regular college. He also guided the

audience related to what they can do currently that can help them crack written test of national level PG

programs and further excel at the places of higher learning. Talk was followed by interactive session where

students took active part.

Mechanical Engineering Department of G H Patel College of Engineering & Technology has organized One

Day Workshop on “Plant Layout Optimization” on 14th February, 2018. The content was designed for 3rd

Year students of Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering. Total 68 participants attended the workshop. In

this workshop, computerized plant layout techniques were discussed with the practical exposure of case-

studies in these fields. Also a hands-on practice session was conducted to develop their skills in applying the

techniques. Dr. Vivek Deshpande, Asst. Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department of GCET, delivered

the technical lectures. Prof. Afzal Alad, Prof. Vivek Patel and Prof. Mihir Solanki conducted the practice

session.

Mechanical Engineering Department of G H Patel College of Engineering & Technology has organized One

Day Workshop on “Design of Experiment” on 15th February, 2018. The content was designed for 1st & 2nd

Year PG students of Industrial Engineering & Mechatronics Engineering. Total 25 participants attended the

workshop. In this workshop, Basic concept of design of experiment, Taguchi analysis & TOPSIS techniques

were discussed with the practical exposure of case-studies in these fields. Also a hands-on practice session

on DOE using MINITAB software was conducted to develop their skills in applying the techniques. Dr. Vivek

Deshpande and Prof. Mihir Solanki of Mechanical Engineering Department of GCET, delivered the technical

lectures. Prof. Afzal Alad and Prof. Mihir Solanki conducted the practice session

In order to give the knowledge of the capabilities of CAD software, an expert lecture was arranged by Prof.

Faijubhai R Malek, for the students of 3rd

year mechanical engineering branch on 19th and 25

th of January,

2018. Experts from outside were invited and they shared their knowledge of Solid works, a CAD software,

with the beneficiaries.

Mechanical Engineering Department of G H Patel College of Engineering & Technology has celebrated

National Productivity Week in Collaboration with National Productivity Council, Gandhinagar on 16th

February, 2018. Theme of this year‟s celebration is “Industry 4.0, Leapfrog Opportunity for India” Poster and

Elocution competition was held on 16th February, 2018. We are thankful to National Productivity Council,

Gandhinagar for sponsoring the prizes (3 each) to winners of the two competitions. Mr. Natarajan Pratap,

Deputy Director, NPC, Gandhinagar was present during the event and he encouraged all the students

through his speech.
