Overpressures
• More explications have done to explain these overpressures:– Desequilibrium compaction– Oil generation– Diagenesis– …
• More recently an osmotic origin has been proposed (Neuzil, 2000, Altmann et al., 2005)
Can you explain these overpressures by an osmotic process?

Question : Which pressure is
measured by the pressure transducer
(P or P’)?
Experimental protocol
Thermodynamic equilibrium: the same
concentration in the both circuits
Perturbation condition: concentrations differents between the two circuits
Conclusions and Perspectives
- The thermodynamic equilibrium predicts a more important pressure in a charged porous medium than in the adjacent uncharged medium.
- Application of the thermodynamic equilibrium to the COX shows overpressures smaller than those measured at the Bure site.
- Moreover, the first result of the in situ experiment seems to indicate that the COX has a very small osmotic efficiency. This result must be verified by the experiment at the sample scale.
- The next steps will be to understand the pressure measured in the COX, to do the experiments at the sample scale and to model the coupled flows.
Thank you for
your attention !
