Even though this introductory level course has been used to assess three different program learning outcomes but the main focus of this course has been to improve the knowledge of the general economic theories of beginners. Performance of this category exhibits a fluctuating trend where results of Fall 17 shows improvements but significant deterioration can be observed in Spring 18. (PLO 1)

More time is now being allocated to discuss the basic concepts and emphasis is being placed on using real life example to clarify the concepts. Plan for Improvement: group discussion on relevant real-life examples

In case of quantitative and analytical skill development category, improvements have been made in increasing the percentage of students meeting expectation but percentage of students performing below expectation and above expectation fails to show such positive changes. (PLO 2)

A significant amount of class time is used for calculation practice and individual attentions are directed towards helping the weaker students. Plan for Improvement: more practice exercises will be provided and practiced

For critical thinking category, marginal improvement can be observed in the reduction of percentage of student below expectation but in contrast the percentage of students performing above expectation has also decreased. (PLO 3)

Plan for Improvement: Prioritize and prepare the student for critical thinking by encouraging class discussion and allocating more marks in assessing critical thinking skills.

This particular course was unable to meet the target for both PLO 1(Knowledge and Understanding) & PLO 2 (Quantitative and Analytical Reasoning Skill). Nonetheless, for PLO 3 (Critical Thinking Skill) the target was met.

The content of the course is extensive and hard to cover everything properly. Therefore, in the new academic curriculum it has been divided into two parts. One part will only focus on trade and the other part will cover international finance. Plan for Improvement: Content focused group discussions and use of more interactive class sessions where recent events on international economy will be discussed along with their impact on development. Apart from that, more time will be allocated to improve the quantitative skill.

Performance of students in knowledge and understanding category is showing significant improvement. (PLO 1)

Course content has been updated. To involve students in the learning and development process, in class presentation was initiated where each student was assigned a particular discussion topic from the course syllabus and they were responsible for explaining that topic to the whole class. The topics covered in the presentation task was also tested in the Final exam question. Plan for Improvement: More attention will be given to develop critical analysis skill and presentation on recent development issues will be introduced to facilitate the process

Student’s performance is showing a downward trend in analytical reasoning skill. Percentage of students performing below expectation has increased whereas the percentage of students performing above expectation has increased. (PLO 2)

Even though percentage of students performing below expectation has increased and performing above expectation has increased but percentage of students meeting expectation has improved. (PLO 3)

Based on the data collected from Spring 18 trimester, this course satisfied target in all three categories. A trend analysis couldn’t be conducted because this course was offered only once during the selected self-study period.

Course content has been updated and is now focusing on both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Practical examples are being used. Moreover, significant attention is being placed on familiarizing them with techniques of literature review. Plan for Improvement: More group activities will be incorporated to help the weaker students improve their research application skill.

Percentage of students meeting expectation is showing marginal improvements. A decreasing trend, however, is exhibited for the percentage of students exceeding expectation.

Changing the structure of the guided research and imposing strict restrictions on plagiarism could be a contributing factor of this change. Assessment rubrics for the guided research has been developed and is now in effect to make the grading more structured. Plan for Improvement: conduct workshop through UIU library to teach and familiarize the students with the resource available and how to use them. Also, this workshop will cover some aspects to creating a proper reference by using modern software’s.
