This is always a fun time of year and the Meadow Pointe community has

a couple of activities planned for residents.

Santa will be coming to Meadow Pointe I on the evening of Friday, December 16th and Meadow Pointe IV is having Hot Cocoa for everyone on the morning of December 23rd. See more inside. Make sure to send the pictures you take at these events in for the next issue.

For the little Meadow Pointe residents we have the coloring contest. Inside is a full page that children can

color (best to use markers) and mail in.

We will pick one winner who will win a $25 gift card to Toys R Us on December 20th. In January, we will display some of the runners up as well.

The happiest of holidays to all and Merry Christmas!

This month marks the half-year anniversary of the Pasco County Animal Services

Adoption Center. This state-of-the-art, 12,650 square-foot facility in Land O’ Lakes has space for 80 dogs and 100 cats. The animals are housed in large, elevated cages in light, airy rooms. Prospective dog-owners walk down wide aisles to view the dogs, and can then take any dog they’re interested in into one of two socializing rooms. Each has access to a small fenced yard, so families can play with the dog before deciding to adopt. The Center also has a large play room for cats with steps and a jungle gym apparatus. “The new Adoption Center,” says Rosemary Lyons, Education and Volunteer Coordinator, “gives us the opportunity to house more adopt-able dogs and cats in a cleaner, more pleasant environment, enhancing their chances of leaving the shelter with their new family.” The new facility has already had an impact on the number of dogs

placed in homes. The figure is up nearly 20% this year, while the number euthanized has decreased 27%. Transfers of dogs to rescue groups have surged and accounts for the difference in the numbers. “A dog is the only thing on this earth that loves you more than he loves himself,” wrote humorist Josh Billings. If you’re considering adopting one–or a cat–come down to the Adoption Center and take a look at the animals waiting to be invited into your home–and into your heart. The Center is also always looking for volunteers to walk dogs, play with dogs and cats, and assist in other ways. The Adoption Center is located at 19640 Dogpatch Lane, off Lake Pa-tience Road, Land O’Lakes. Center hours are Tues., Wed., Fri., and Sat., 12:00-4:30, Thurs. 12-6:30. Phone numbers are (813) 929-1212, (352) 521-5194, and (727) 834-3216. v

Breast Cancer is the number one cancer in women. It used to be the number one cancer killer, but thanks

to societal awareness and early detection with mammography most women are not dying after a breast cancer diagnosis. Mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, but they save lives by finding breast cancer early, leading to intervention and cure. Finding breast cancers early with mammography has also meant that many more women are able to keep their breasts without resorting to mastectomy. What is Mammography?Mammography is a special type of X-Ray. It is a photograph of the breast using low dose radiation designed for imaging breast tissue and is very safe. Mammography is the most important tool radiologists have to help diagnose and evaluate women with lumps and to monitor women who have had breast cancer. Although mammography is the best tool for early diagnosis, mammography is not perfect - missing about 10% of breast cancers. So if you feel a lump and it doesn’t show up on mammography, let your doctor know. Many physicians will order an ultrasound or MRI

to better evaluate a woman with symptoms. These imaging tests should not lessen the importance of regular breast self-examination and examination by an experienced health care professional. Regular breast self exams are also very important, leading to early detection. Types of MammographyThere are two types of mammography exams, screening and diagnostic. Screening mammography is for women who have no complaints or symptoms. The goal of screening mammography is to detect cancer when it is too small to be felt. Early detection of small breast cancers by screening mammography greatly improves chances for cure. Screening is recommended every one to two years after age 40 and every year after age 50. Diagnostic mammography is an exam on a patient who has a breast

complaint, such as breast lump, nipple discharge or an abnormal screening mammogram. These exams are more involved and more time consuming and are used to fully characterize the size and location of breast abnormalities. Women with breast implants will usually require the additional views used in diagnostic mammography.

In summary, the benefits of mammography for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer is significant and saves lives. The benefits far outweigh the minimal risk from radiation received and the discomfort during mammography. Mammography, even with its limitations, will continue to be the gold standard with which other imaging tests are compared. v Dr. Manuel S. Rose is a Board Certified Radiologist and founder of Rose Radiology Centers, inc. www.MRiRose.com 813-778-2500.

In early November, Deputy Aaron Smith donned his ‘special’ bike uniform and started cruising through Meadow Pointe

II and III on bicycle.

Deputy Smith is certified, trained and is familiar with bicycle safety, maintenance, suspect approach techniques, tactical dismounts, and emergency skills. His bike is specially equipped with headlamps and reflectors as well as a back rack and carry-case.

Deputy Smith is no stranger to bike patrol. Before relocating to the sunshine state, he was a bike patrol officer in New Hampshire for a number of years.

SPOTLIgHT On

Some benefits of bike patrol:• The bike is an excellent public relations tool. People are more comfortable approaching a deputy on bike than a deputy in a patrol car

• The Deputy can assist children coming/going in the school zones; can better enforce bicycle laws and promote bike safety.

• The bike gives the deputy the ability to maneuver through trails and inaccessible areas

• It allows the deputy to approach a situation without being observed. The element of surprise can lead to an easier apprehension of a suspect

Deputy Smiths enjoys the interaction with residents and is pleased to be a part of first (re-instated) Deputy Bike Patrol program in Pasco County. v

AskMolly Dear Molly:On a recent stroll through my neighborhood I noticed two streetlights out. Do I report it to the clubhouse? Curious in Colehaven

Dear Curious,You may. We would be happy to contact TECO. Pls try to get the pole number (located on center of pole) and closest address to pole. Or you can contact Tampa Electric at 813-223-0800 or email @tampaelectric.com and fill out an online form.

Dear Molly,Yesterday I was sitting on my lanai reading, relaxing and relishing the crisp fresh air when out of the corner of my eye, I saw an alligator sunning itself. It was a calm, almost picturesque scene. Then to my utter surprise, I saw an elderly gentleman and a little boy approach the gator and throw food at it. Not a good idea, right? Mystified in Morningside

Dear Mystified,Definitely not a good idea to feed an alligator. Alligators cannot be tamed and feeding them can result in their mistaking a hand for a handout! It is also against the law. Molly strongly urges residents to steer clear of alligators. Admire them from afar. “Remember … a fed gator is a dead gator”. If called into the Alligator Hotline, a trapper will remove and destroy it; they are not relocated!!!

If you have something to ask Molly, please email [email protected].

We wish all our friends and neighbors in Meadow Pointe II a joyous Holiday Season. Please drive safely during

your Holiday visits with family and friends.

We wish to remind our residents who take part in the decorating of Village Entrances each year that when installing holiday lights, please inspect all strings of lights for signs of wear, cracks or breaks in the wires, lose bulb sockets and use only outdoors UL approved light bulbs, as recom-mended by the manufacturer; use only official waterproof electrical tape for all female and male connectors joining strings of lights and extension cords.

Please do not place these connections in plastic bags; try to elevate them slightly so as to keep them off the ground and away from irrigation or other surface water. Use only ap-proved UL extension cords labeled for outdoor use and make a concerted effort to estimate the amount of wattage you’re sending through it so as not to overload the wire and GFCI (ground fault interrupter), if your system is overloaded, it could cause the breaker to trip and the lights will go out.

If decorating the village gates, use caution when stringing the lights, allowing for gates to operate

correctly when opening and closing. Call the clubhouse(991-5016) one day in advance if you need gates locked open to decorate for we have limited weekend staff. The safety of all our resi-dents is our top priority, and we are here to help in any way we can so everyone will have a safe, enjoyable Holiday.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, and Wesley Chapel

hosts two of thesoutheast’s best male lacrosse tournaments, but girls have had less opportunity to compete until now.

The first I Lacrosse My Heart girls’ tournament was held last month, doubling as a fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Pediatric Heart Center. Tampa Tribe coach Renee Diaz helped develop the idea for the tournament to give young female lacrosse players another competitive

setting.“Girls’ lacrosse always lags behind the boys game a bit, and we see that especially here locally,” Diaz said. “Instead of our girls having to go over to the other side of the state all of the time, we wanted to have something here that would also benefit charity, so we chose St. Joseph’s because a couple of us have had kids who have received treatment at that hospital.”

New women’s lacrosse programs at Saint Leo University and Florida Southern University were on hand to play an exhibition match and offer a coaching clinic on Saturday.

“The college teams were phenomenal in their support of this tournament, and for the first time we’ve ever done this tournament, we’ve raised good money for charity,” Wesley Chapel’s lacrosse director Joe Palermo said.

Parent Heart Watch, an advocacy group dedicated to protecting youth from sudden cardiac arrest on the playing field, was also on hand to educate parents and coaches on the importance of being trained on automated external defibrillators, or AED machines.

“It’s important people realize that cardiac issues can affect their children and if they don’t get treated early, they could lose them when they come out here on the field,” Diaz said. “The support we’ve received for this tournament and the exhibition game has been amazing. I expected 50 girls for the game, but we had 109. I think seeing those teams play shows the girls that they can go to college and play lacrosse, so a lot of them were very excited about it.”

Diaz hopes that lacrosse will become

big enough for the Florida High School Athletic Association and Tampa Bay schools to make it a sanctioned school sport, something that has happened in other parts of the state.

“We have to do things like this so our girls can continue playing competitive lacrosse throughout the year,” Diaz said. “Hopefully this can make them stand up and take notice.”

The tournament was attended by all of the Tampa Tribe teams that call Wesley Chapel District Park home as well as the South Tampa Sticks, Newsome High School, the FishHawk Coyotes, Orange County Storm and others.

“I think this tournament has a really good format and was well organized,” FishHawk coach Chris Crusey said. “From a community standpoint in the bay area, we couldn’t have done this two years ago. Now we have over 100 players here, and the level of play is a lot higher than what it was two years ago. Events like this will only keep raising the bar.” v

Selling your home during the holidays can make you more money. First, it gives you as

much as a two-month head start on your competition because the market will dramatically increase during January and February. During the holidays the number of homes on the market is at its lowest because many sellers have taken their homes off the market during the season. People who look at homes over the holidays are serious buyers spending valuable family time to look at your home. The holidays are an emotional time and buyers tend to spend more money, whether on gifts or homes. After the holidays the bills start coming in and the willingness to spend is decreased. When decorating for the holiday choose a color scheme and style that best fits your home. Keep that same style and color palette throughout the house. The main rule of decorating during the holiday is less is more. Continually repeat themes or deco-rating elements in moderation. Not every room needs to be decorated,

focus on the entrance walk, front door and main living space. The color scheme and elements on the outside should match the inside. You want your home to look elegant but feel warm. Natural greens, silver and gold ornaments, lit scented candles and soft music set the tone. Buyers feel at home and not overwhelmed by too many decorations, colors and scents. When selling your home, every penny counts, so keep your costs down. Look in your own back yard or neighborhood for pinecones to spray silver and gold. Don’t use artifi-cial greens; take cuttings from bushes, holly, pine or spruce trees. Scale down the size of your Christmas tree as well as all other decorations because you want to make sure the house still appears uncluttered and spacious. Finally, hire an agent with experience in all market conditions. For more information call Liz DeAmbrose, Coldwell Banker at 813-956-6487 or email at [email protected]. v

STUdEnT REcOgnITIOn

Congratulations to Nikita Shah (11th grade) for being chosen as the winner of Wiregrass Ranch High School and the District’s Sunshine State Scholars award for Math/Science.

Each high school in Pasco County nominated a student, and Nikita was chosen as the District’s representative. This award goes to a high school junior who is distin-guished in both math and science. Since she is the district winner, she and her parents will be invited to travel to Orlando for a two-day program in February. She will be recognized for her achievement and have the opportunity to meet with recruiters from Florida Col-leges and Universities.

WRHS OUTSTAndIng SEnIOR

We are pleased to announce that Victoria (Tori) Quaglia has received the WRHS Outstanding Student Award. Tori demonstrates a high level of scholarship, leader-ship, service, and citizenship and

stands out as our top student. She was among 10 seniors nominated by the student body. She then received the highest number of faculty votes to make her our Outstanding Student of the Year.

The next step is the County level competition. Tori will undergo an interview process in early No-vember, at which time a commit-tee will review her resume, letter of recommendation, and other supplemental information. They will then choose from among all the high schools, the best student to receive the Pasco County Out-standing Student Award.

Please be sure to congratulate Tori and to wish her well on the upcoming interview. It would be great to have our WRHS student recognized as the top student in the county!

The Sand Pine Elementary School PTA held their 5th annual Fall Festival on Friday, November 4, 2011. It was the perfect evening for a family event. The entire night was filled with smiles, laughter and lots of excitement! Students, families, and friends tested their skills at fall-themed games such as Turkey in the Straw, Pumpkin Bowling, Scarecrow Hop, Apple Bob, and many more. Everyone was a winner, leaving with big smiles and “goodie bags” full of prizes.

In addition to the games, there were hayrides, a pumpkin pie eat-ing contest, and a pumpkin deco-rating contest. Students took their best shot as some favorite teachers and Principal, Todd Cluff, braved the dunk tank. DJ Jay Sheridan provided great music to keep everyone dancing throughout the night. Other activities included

amazing caricatures by Dave Smith as well as artistic face painting by Wyndy Olsen.

Upon reflecting on the event, Mr. Cluff stated, “Once again I am amazed at the incredible support the Sand Pine families provide our school. An event like this could only happen through the volunteer efforts of a dedicated staff and community. In a time of high-stakes testing and account-ability, it’s wonderful to have times during the school year when we can simply let our hair down and have fun with the kids and their families.” This event was a huge success thanks to all of the volunteers that donated their time and energy.

Sand Pine Elementary School is located at 29040 County Line Road in Meadow Pointe.

The Special Santa program was created to give families support during the holidays

by providing gifts and food for eligible children living in the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs (GFWC) New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club (NTJWC) service area.

“Our goal is to provide each child with one complete school outfit, under pants, socks, shoes, three toys and Christmas dinner for the entire family” said Patricia Murphy, Head Elf for the Special Santa Project. “In the past we have adopted 40-50 children from Mort Elementary School to make their Christmas wishes come true. However, this year we were only able to adopt 22 children due to a decline in our membership.”

As of today, the New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club has received 603

applications for assistance from children at Mort Elementary, Muller Elementary and the University Area Community Center. “I know I can’t help all of them but I may be able to make this Christmas a little better for a few of them and I have a lot of wonderful friends here that have agreed to participate in the Toy Collection, so I’m really excited” said Murphy.

In an effort to meet the needs of the additional applicants Juniors will be hosting collection boxes throughout the Tampa Palms, New Tampa and Wesley Chapel area for new unused toys for children aged 1 to 18.

“We are looking primarily for toys for big kids because those are the ones that don’t qualify for Toys for Tots. Most of the requests are for basketballs, dodge balls, scooters, those little MP3 players and gift cards but we will accept

any new unwrapped toys because there is always another child being added to my list” said Murphy, “In a perfect world I’d like to be able to offer parents one toy for each child in their qualifying household but I know money is tight for all of us this year and that’s why I’m hoping the community will come together and help support my little project.”

“Last year was the first year we delivered directly to the families and it was the most rewarding experience” said Murphy “In the past NTJWC had dropped off the gifts to the school for the parents to pick up but the social worker told me some of the parents were getting mugged on their way home with the gifts. When I volunteered to manage the project last year I decided it was important to me to keep the parents and their children out of harm’s way by making special

deliveries to their homes. I realize that it is a high crime neighborhood and some people may be uncomfortable but I would never ask a volunteer to do something I wouldn’t do myself.

This year we have a patrolman that has volunteered to assist us with deliveries and everyone is very excited about the added community involvement.” v

There is a unique opportunity in our area, for any age instru-mental musicians.

The Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble, formed in 2007, is a community band experience not to be missed. With members living in Meadow Pointe (including Bob Jasper, Naoko Hill and myself), Tampa Palms, and other nearby communities, we come together once a week to make harmonious music together for the

Wesley Chapel and neighboring areas.

This fun group is completely vol-unteer, and open to musicians of all ages. Currently in our 60+ member ensemble, we have players from Middle school and High school, all the way up to age 83! Students of Wiregrass Ranch High, Zephyrhills High, Weightman Middle, as well as adults living in the area, rehearse 2 hours each Thursday from 7-9pm

at the Crossroads United Methodist Church (26211 County Line Rd.)

As principal conductor of the group, I am very proud of the ensemble’s progress and we have received high praises from our many performances. Ed Evans, director of bands at Pasco High School attended our last event, and commented “This is a fine group of musicians, playing some quality literature. It’s amazing how good this group can play, considering it is a community band only meeting once a week!”

We have all kinds of musicians from amateur to professional, and instru-ments such as flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bari sax, tenor sax, alto sax, trumpet, horn, tuba, euphonium, trombone, bassoon, percussion and even a few string players.

Within the group we also have some small ensembles, such as our Dixieland group, which performs locally at Organic Life Coffee House and Bakery, and a Brass Ensemble named “Brasstastick”. Our next

performance is scheduled December 3rd at the Shops of Wiregrass Mall. Performance begins at 8pm. We are then performing in Zephyrhills for the annual Tree Lighting ceremony at the Florida Hospital, an all day event on December 4th.

We just performed at the New Tampa YMCA Harvest Festival, and have had performances at Church Street Christmas, Dade City Train Festival, Relay for Life, and various other local events. Come out and join us, or sign up for our concert email list so you can come and enjoy our performances. Email Glenn at [email protected] for more information, or to be added to the concert email list so you can be noti-fied of upcoming concerts. We also have a website, at www.wesleychapel-windensemble.com.

If you prefer a quicker response or have questions, contact Glenn at 813-746-4821. Hope to see you at a rehearsal or performance soon! Scott Leahy, Director, Wesley Chapel Wind Ensemble & Meadow Pointe resident. v
