“The Third of the Twelve” When we hear the phrase "the twelve" in a religious context, probably the
first thought that we have is the twelve apostles of Jesus (1 Cor. 15:5).
However, there are many twelves in the Bible, not the least of which is
"the Twelve Prophets" (Sirach 49:10 NRSV). This is referring to the
prophets who wrote the books that we commonly call The Minor Prophets,
the last twelve books of The Old Testament.
The adjective "minor" isn't intended to be a put-down. They're minor in
contrast with The Major Prophets merely because of the respective size of
the books; they're shorter in length. However, Christians often treat them
as though they are minor. These twelve books are rarely studied by
modern Christians. There are multiple reasons for this neglect, not the least
of which is a faulty inference which we've drawn from the truth that "we
died to the law by the body of Christ" (Rom. 7:4 NIV). While it is true
that we are not bound to keep the regulations of The Old Testament law in
order to be in right standing with God (Gal. 5:4), it is not true that The Old
Testament is irrelevant to us. Paul said that they are "useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of
God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Tim. 3:16-17
NIV).
Consider my favorite of the twelve, the third one, Amos. Amos wasn't a
professional prophet. This is what he meant when he said, "I was neither a
prophet nor the son of a prophet" (Amos 7:14 NIV). There was a school
for the training of prophets begun by Samuel (cf. 1 Sam. 19:20). Those
who were under the tutelage of the head prophet were called "sons of the
prophet" (2 Kings 2:3). Amos, rather, was a farmer. He said, "I was a
shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees" (Amos 7:14 NIV).
Yet God called him to travel to the town of Bethel in the Northern
Kingdom, where Jereboam I had established an idolatrous cult, and to
preach against it, calling the people to repentance (v. 15). The people
didn't appreciate Amos; Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, told him to go back
home (v. 12).
Really, Amos is a picture of the average Christian. They may not have
been trained to be preachers, but God calls every Christian to teach the
gospel and to call the world to repentance (Matt. 28:18-20). Most people
in the world won't appreciate us just as they didn't appreciate Amos. They
will tell us to go back to our churches. Amos's reply should be our reply
too: "The Sovereign Lord has spoken--who can but prophecy?" (3:8 NIV;
cf. Acts 4:19-20).
Let's not neglect these instructive little books!
