As Dale and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that they're not suffering from cannabis fuelled paranoia, there really are the dangerous dealers after them and trying to figure out the fastest way to kill them both. There are a few elements that attract me to the comedy genre of film. One of the factors is the story; I enjoy how unrealistic the storyline of comedy films although, I have read that the story of Superbad was based on a true story of one of the directors and Seth Rogan, so this attracts my attention even more. This is because it’s enjoyable to share someone’s embarrassing, adventurous experiences whether it is in a real life situation or through a film. Although I do find comedy films appealing even if they’re not based on a true story. The main factor of why comedy films appeal to me is because of the actors that star in the films, especially my three choices of films. Seth Rogan, Jonah Hill or James Franco all star in at

Page 3: Me & My Movies

least one of my chosen film. These actors are all very popular and have starred in a lot of comedy films. So this is definitely one of the main reasons the films appealed to me and attracted me in to watch them.

The first film (Superbad) is film is set in a teen comedy so is set in a high school, where it is bright and well populated. The large majority of teen films are set in these same settings also. The characters in this Seth, Evan and Fogal are very socially awkward, quite naive teenagers. Both of last two films (Pineapple Express and This is the End) are very similar and follow the same codes and conventions. Although they are set in completely different areas for example, Pineapple Express is set in multiple settings from houses to the streets and This is the End is set mostly in a house, the film is very claustrophobic. The conventions that all these films do follow is that the film occurs in social places where there is a welcoming atmosphere. All three films are structured following the three act linear structure, which means it structured from the inciting incident, to the rising action and the final denouement. There is no narration but the films do create some enigma when building up to the main events throughout. Most comedy follow the same codes and conventions. For example in this film, the camera is very natural and follows the characters around, using a different range of shots from wide to close ups which will capture all of the different characters expressions. Diegetic sounds are used to create a more realistic feel for the audience watching. Some iconography is used in comedies, the mise en scene and setting are two of the main elements that stand out.

I find out about new films and all the information i need to know on social networking sites such as facebook, instagram but the main one is twitter. I find out about all of this from either advertisements from the producers or the cast of a film. It is a benefit to be aware of the media that surrounds us. Our society thrives on media so being media literate is important. Being “media literate” means that you understand how the media works and know the real messages of things. I’ve become more media literate by looking and reading deeper into the surrounding media. Learning about the process and conventions of all of it gives you more of a critical eye because you know how things are being produced. Studying media in college also helps as the skills we have learnt or are learning makes us question things when we watch TV or films.

The way we react to films is based on our age, gender, ethnicity, social class, culture, personal history and even your political outlook. For example, i enjoy watching comedy films because i am 17 years old, female and hang around with friends a lot. people my age can relate to some of the embarrassing, funny and memorable experience that the audience encounter when watching the films, especially teen comedies.

There aren’t many forms of fandom for my chosen genre. There are people on the internet who will write fanfiction ‘make believe stories’ for certain actors that star in comedy films. I have never came across a conventions for comedy films as i think they only provide for other film genres such as sci-fi and fantasy. There are a lot of facebook groups and pages that fans can follow and can take part in discussions about certain comedians and actors.

Marketing campaigns always meet my expectations, either with trailers, posters or billboards. There have been a few times where the actual film has not met my expectations but the marketing campaign has. For example, last year i went to watch a film named “A Walk Among The Tombstones” with my college class, we all voted for the film after watching the trailer but after watching it we were all disappointed. i think this is because all of the funny, interesting parts in the film get put into the trailer to anchor you to watch them, but after watching it there isn’t anything good to look forward to.
