  • Memorandum

To: Bruce Poliquin for CongressFr: Gene Ulm and Trip MullenDate: August 29, 2014Re: Maines Second Congressional District Survey Key Findings

The following memorandum is based on a survey of 400 likely voters completed by Public OpinionStrategies in Maines Second Congressional District on behalf of the Poliquin for Congress campaign. The survey was completed by Public Opinion Strategies August 17-19, 2014, and has a margin of error of +/- 4.9%.

The race is a statistical dead-heat. Cain currently holds a slight lead over Poliquin, 37%33%,while third-party candidate Richardson is getting six percent of the vote and 24% remainundecided.

Among those most likely to vote (by vote history) the race is a 34%-35% tie; Cains currentslim lead is VERY reliant on those with very little history of voting.

The undecided voters who will decide this race lean GOP and dislike the President:

Undecided voters are eight points more Republican than Democrat by registration.

Over half (55%) of the undecided voters disapprove of President Obama one-third(32%) strongly so.

The above points to a race that likely will close in Poliquins favor.

Republican Bruce Poliquin is running in a GOP-friendly environment.

-- The Republican candidate has a six point lead on the generic Congressional ballot(39%33%).

-- More than seven-in-ten voters (72%) think the county is seriously off on the wrong track, including 69% of Independent voters, and 66% of undecided voters.

President Obama will be a boat-anchor in Maines 2nd Congressional district. PresidentObama has a net -12 approval rating in the district (41%53%). He is under water amongthe voters who will decide this race: Independents (45%51%).

-- The Senate race is going to be a blow out. The latest poll from CBS News shows SusanCollins with a 36 point lead (65%29%), and Collins has a very favorable image in thedistrict (70% favorable22% unfavorable). Both are top-of-ticket factors that will accrueto Poliquins favor on the ballot.
