Visitors enjoy the year-round sunny weather and ocean breeze with water-front dining, on-the-water recreation, and six contemporary hotels that line the water’s edge. What’s more? Its prime coastal location is just steps from its world-famous neighbors, Venice Beach and Santa Monica. And with easy access to major freeways (read: popular tourist attractions), Marina del Rey is minutes away from all the excitement of Los Angeles.

With restaurants that hug the harbor, be ready to dine against a backdrop of open air, luxury yachts, and sparkling waters. Restaurants like Beachside, Café del Rey, and Whiskey Red’s offer expan-sive views of the Marina del Rey water-front. Cast & Plow at the Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey serves farm-to-table cuisine on its outdoor terrace that sits directly across from yachts and a water-front promenade. Marina del Rey is also the only place in Los Angeles to “Dock & Dine.” With the public dock at Killer Shrimp Restaurant, groups can paddle-board, kayak, or boat to their favorite meal (happy hour included). Want to dine on the water? Hornblower Cruises offers champagne brunch and dinner dance cruises weekly.

Marina del Rey’s waterfront location offers unique activities that visitors can

enjoy year-round. The 22-mile Marvin Braude Coastal Bike Path that stretches from Pacific Palisades to Torrance winds through the Marina, making it easy to hop on and enjoy the endless beach views. On-the-water activities like stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, jet skiing, and sailing keep the Marina waters active. Boat rentals are a fun way to enjoy the water, whether it’s a picnic lunch aboard a duffy boat or a high-speed power boat that breaks out onto the Pacific. Skippered boat charters are another relaxing way to see the coastline.

A visit to Marina del Rey can take you to new heights (literally) with a parasailing excursion that soars high above the ocean for some of the best views of Los Angeles. Looking for an adventure closer to sea? Marina del Rey Sportfishing takes groups out on the Santa Monica Bay for a fishing excursion. Paddleboard yoga is another hot activity that’s making a splash across the Marina waters. Classes at Phins Water Sports Club and YOGAqua are offered weekly and continue to grow.

Marina del ReyAbout

Located in the heart of the Los Angeles coastline and only 4 miles from LAX, Marina del Rey is a waterfront playground with endless harbor views and a relaxed “California cool” vibe on the bustling Westside.

uTIPDid you know? Marina del Rey is only 800 acres – half of which is underwater.

Marina del Rey translates

to “Harbor of the King”

Page 6: Mdr destination guide 2015

Before yachts lined the Marina del Rey harbor, the area was a saltwater marsh most known for duck hunting and oil derricks. Thanks to a unique public-pri-vate partnership, plans for a commercial harbor became a reality and on April 10, 1965 Marina del Rey was formally dedicated and the “Crown Jewel of the County” was born. The largest manmade small craft harbor in North America (and at one time the world), the Marina was known as a waterfront haven for bachelors and boaters. The water was busy with sailboats coming in and out of the harbor and public boating docks made it easy for boaters to enjoy waterfront hotspots like Don the Beachcomber. The Marina was a boaters’ paradise.

Today, Marina del Rey thrives on its sparkling waterfront. Boating still reigns, but modern hotels, brand-new tech savvy luxury apartment commu-nities, popular outdoor concerts, a hot roster of water sports and trends like

beachside food trucks and a weekly farmers market, all showcase the Marina’s evolution. And with the cel-ebration of its 50th birthday in 2015, this stylish coastal community is celebrating in a big way. To honor this important milestone, community officials are plan-ning a series of year-long celebrations, including special events and promo-tions with a big birthday bash planned in April, commemorating the harbor’s official dedication. Birthday festivities are open to the public and will take place in different locations across the Marina, including Burton Chace Park and Marina (Mother’s) Beach.

For more information on the Marina’s 50th birthday and its festivities, please visit www.mdr50.com. To learn more about the history of Marina del Rey or to enjoy historical photos and docu-ments, please visit the Marina del Rey Historical Society located at 13755 Fiji Way in Fisherman’s Village.

History of Marina del Rey

Boating, dining, entertainment, cool breezes and picturesque harbor views — Marina del Rey’s Fisherman’s Village has it all. You’ll find the best waterfront views of Marina del Rey’s main channel, busy with boats coming and going. At its docks are recreational rentals, charter vessels, seasonal whale watching and water taxi, and a commercial fishing fleet. Nearby vessels include the harbor patrol, US Coast Guard, and county lifeguard rescue boats made famous in the TV series, Baywatch. Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Cape Cod are brought to life architecturally with colorful structures and an iconic lighthouse. Pelicans, seals and sunsets abound. Bring camera!

Popular weekend concerts are presented in the lighthouse courtyard, surrounded with food concessions. Sapori Res-taurant offers exquisite Italian cuisine, beautifully pre-sented, with views of the harbor from inside and from its outdoor dining patio. The popular El Torito offers margue-ritas and mexican cuisine.

On the docks, Marina del Rey Boat Rentals offers hu-manpowered stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and small sailboats, as well as powerboats, jet skis, and quiet electric ‘Duffy’ boats. For spectacular views of Santa Monica Bay, book a ride with Marina del Rey Parasailing.

Marina del Rey Sportfishing offers daily fishing trips and seasonal whale-watching. Larger groups celebrate special occasions aboard elegant party charter vessels operated by Tiki Mermaid and Hornblower Cruises.

For fun and scenic exercise, peddle a portion of the Marvin Braude Bike Path. The 22-mile route goes right by Fisher-man’s Village, about a mile north of midpoint. Daniel’s Bike Rentals can assist with equipment.

Marina del Rey Historical Society tells the story of Marina del Rey’s creation and with an exhibit at its History Gallery, and in Images of America: Marina del Rey, its newly released book available for purchase, along with photos, DVDs, T-shirts and more. For narrated Marina his-tory, take Starline Tours’ narrated Hop-On Hop-Off buses.

Fisherman’s Village retail shops offer great souvenirs, handmade items and ECO-friendly merchandise.

During summer months, the Marina del Rey Waterbus ferries passengers around the harbor, and a landward Beach Shuttle connects the Village with the rest of Marina del Rey, Venice Pier, and Playa Vista. From down-town Los Angeles, visitors can take Metro Expo Line light rail to Culver City station. From there, Culver CityBus Line 7 goes directly to Fisherman’s Village.
