KKP Collaborates with MDPI for Small-Scale Fisheries ManagementJAKARTA - Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI) is collaborating with the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) in increasing the role of small-scale fishermen in implementing responsible-fisheries management practices. MDPI takes opportunity from market forces to achieve this for tuna fisheries. MDPI is well known as a non-profit organisation that provides assistance to small-scale fishermen, especially handline tuna fishermen in Eastern Indonesia. The collaboration between the KKP and MDPI is stated in a joint agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at the KKP office in Jakarta on Friday, December 7, 2018. The KKP Secretary General, Nilanto Perbowo, and MDPI Executive Director, Saut Tampubolon, were the representatives to sign the document. A number of MDPI’s partners in small-scale fisheries and representatives from other KKP departments also attended the signing ceremony. The cooperation area covers the provinces of Maluku, North Maluku, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara and will be valid for a period of three years. MDPI looks forward to further strengthened collaboration with KKP on issues related to small-scale fisheries.

Getting a new assignment on Sanana Island, Maluku is a challenge, yet an excitement for Hendri Heni Tiala. He is excited to explore the island, especially for snorkeling. "So far, I can only go snorkeling, I can't dive," he said. While working at MDPI, Hendri also often uses his free time to snorkel on some beautiful beaches. "Because I love fish," he added. (*)
BOGOR- One of the biggest
challenges in small-scale
fisheries in Indonesia is the
data collection. A lot of data,
but it is still difficult to access
or it is not well-organized.
The Directorate General of
Capture Fisheries, Ministry of
Marine Affairs and Fisheries or
KKP encourages all parties to
contribute to open access to
data by organizing a meeting
to develop the Integrated Data
Participatory framework or
iDAPAR framework. Yayasan
MDPI, academia, and NGOs
also attended the meeting
held in Bogor on December 16,
2018.
The main objective of the
meeting was to integrate
fisheries data from all
stakeholders and to bring
iDAPAR into a Fish Catch
Operational Data Center
which will become an
operational fishing data portal.
Director General of Capture
Fisheries of KKP Zulficar
Mochtar welcomed the
participants of iDAPAR
meeting. He hoped that all
stakeholders can work
together to improve data
management, especially for
small-scale fisheries. "It is the
time for us to collaborate and
work together," he said.(*)
Another achievement at the end of the year was the signing of a joint agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pusriskan or Center of Fisheries Research of KPP to strengthen the research and data collection, signed on December 28, 2018 at Pusriskan office in Jakarta. The Head of Pusriskan KKP Toni Ruchimat and Executive Director of MDPI Saut Tampubolon were the representatives to sign the document."The agreement covers activities, such as data on catches, the interaction of ETP (endangered, threatened, and protected) species in handline tuna fisheries in small-scale fishermen," said Saut.
