Bringing our Strategic Plan to life
I’m excited to share that we have officially revealed our Masonic Care Tasmania Inaugural Strategic Plan for 2018-2023. As part of this reveal, we have developed a Strategic Plan video that will become a key tool to highlight our refreshed purpose, vision and values, and creates a snapshot of our five strategic goals. It’s our aim to share this video with all of those who live, work, visit and support us. This video will soon play in all of our reception areas, on our website, and be included in staff induction emails, future presentations and award nominations. This is another important step towards bringing our Strategic Plan to life and I hope you are as proud as I am to see how far we’ve come on this journey together as one state-wide organisation. The future is bright and the enthusiasm and support from those who live with and visit us, together with the hard work and commitment from our 500+ staff, is key to our success as we become a respected leader in the health services industry. To view the video online please visit our website at www.masoniccaretas.org.au under ‘About Us’.

New opportunities
Recently, I presented alongside Craig French, ED Corporate Services, and Jayne Williams, ED Community, to residents from another provider’s retirement living community. The aim of the session was to get residents excited about the many opportunities that might be possible should MCT purchase the village. I am now happy to confirm that MCT has signed a purchase agreement and the small retirement village in Lindisfarne will add to our expanding retirement living community in the south.
More good news! MCT has also recently acquired a small day respite centre, which will further enhance our care services and reach in the south of the state. This existing centre is highly regarded in its local community for providing experienced care in a home-like environment. The centre also provides social outings, transport and meals for those who visit.
These new purchases create extraordinary opportunities for those who live, work and support MCT. Expanding our services in local communities enables us to increase awareness of the quality services we provide to more than 1,000 people across Tasmania.
Improving Dementia Care program update
An exciting collaboration between Masonic Care Tasmania, Masonic Centenary Medical Research Foundation and Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre.
Our two year Improving Dementia Care program began in May 2017 and its key aim was to develop, implement and evaluate the impact of a Dementia Care Support Worker (DCSW) across our three residential locations in Tasmania.
It is my great pleasure to share some highlights that have taken place over the past 12 months and the impact it has had on those who live, work and support us.
In August, Dr Emma Lea, a driving force of the program, presented at The Alzheimer’s

I am also thrilled to share that Masonic Care Tasmania has been named 2018 Tasmanian Aged Care Provider of the Year and a finalist in the 2018 Aged Care Services Australia (ACSA) National Aged Care Awards!
After winning 2018 Tasmanian Aged Care Provider of the Year, MCT is now proud to represent Tasmania in the running for the National Aged Care Provider of the Year award at the National Awards Ceremony on September 5th in Sydney.
Being named a national finalist is a significant acknowledgment for our organisation and a true reflection of the extraordinary people that work with us.
Fingers crossed!
Migrant ResourceProgram
Our Migrant Resource Program project is a collaboration between the Migrant Resource Centre North, St Giles and MCT. This training and employment pathway project is specifically designed for culturally and linguistically-diverse people to enable them to find employment in the disability and aged care sectors.
Following the outstanding success of the first program, we’re excited to embark on the second intake with the first placements having commenced at Peace Haven and Fred French Catering and Cleaning.
Please join us in welcoming our new group. Feel free to say ‘hi’ and have a chat if you see them around.
MCT named 2018 Aged Care Provider of the Year!
Association International Conference, the largest and most influential international meeting dedicated to advancing dementia science. Being accepted and given the opportunity to present on an international stage is a significant acknowledgment of the extraordinary team and the important work they are doing.
The new model will present an opportunity for care worker graduates to bring their nursing home clinical experience and dementia knowledge to a peer support role. Key stakeholders have been highly supportive of the role, citing its impact on improving staff understanding of dementia, initiation of practice change, and expressing their hope that the role will be effective in driving organisation-wide change to improve residents’ quality of life.
I think you will agree that these are some really positive initial outcomes of the project. The team and I look forward to keeping you posted in the coming months.
Please enjoy the many highlights and stories in this edition, and thank you for choosing to live life with Masonic Care Tasmania.
Warm regards,
Daniel Findley

Volunteer William visits weekly and recently brought in ‘Luna’, his silky hen.
Will shows his fowls and has won many awards, so we got very excited when he came to visit with her!
New volunteer, Melani, with her daughters Sian

Claude visits Freemasons weekly and even has a purple bandana with his name on it!
We love and benefit so much from these visits.
Research has revealed that pet therapy can have many benefits, including:
• Decreased blood pressure and cholesterol;
• Reduction in stress, anxiety and depression symptoms;
• Improved communication and reminiscence;
• Increased social interaction and reduced loneliness; and
• Higher comfort levels.
Doug the Pug and Sophie the Golden Retriever have been causing quite the commotion at Fred French. They are regular visitors to the home, bringing much joy to our residents and staff!
Sophie, the Golden Retriever, along with her owner, Elizabeth Winkler, come to visit relatives. The walk from the front door to her relatives is a long one as everyone along the way wants to give Sophie some love.
Doug the Pug is the newest addition to our pet visitors scheme. He belongs to Deb Pulford, a nurse at Fred French. Doug visits residents in their rooms and in the lounge areas, giving everyone free pats and hugs!

Since June, Fred French and Peace Haven residents have been undertaking a winter walking challenge, with participants appropriately dubbed the ‘Winter Walkers’.
Both facilities have created a course of about 200m and set the goal of walking the distance equivalent to Mt Wellington in Hobart, with every 100m equating to one mile on the map. As of July 26th, Fred French clocked up an awesome 438km, which means they have made it to Strahan!
Recently, we had a group of Year 9 students from Scotch Oakburn College do a work experience placement with the Leisure and Lifestyle team at Fred French.
Here is what they had to say:
“We really enjoyed socialising with all the residents and staff...We were very impressed by how you go above and beyond to help improve residents quality of life. We always felt welcome and accepted.”

Every lap of the course is not only making residents healthier and happier, but also raising money for The Examiner’s Winter Relief Appeal.

Using your Red Cross alarm
As you are aware, Community Services have been busy rolling out the new Red Cross alarm systems in the Northern Retirement Living Communities, replacing the vital call system.
We still have about 10% left to do, then all Northern Retirement Living Units will be monitored 24/7 via Red Cross.
Red Cross advises you to test your pendant on a regular basis. They have also advised that this can be as often as you like. Even if you think there may be something wrong with the system, just press your pendant and let the call centre know that you are just testing.
If you are going away for any length of time or any of your personal details change, you can press the pendant and advise the call centre how long you are away for and provide them with the dates or let them know of any changes to your medical conditions over the intercom. This includes changes to next-of-kin.
There is no need to phone Red Cross, just press your pendant and talk via the intercom.

TOP TIPS: To prevent lost clothing
Ilma Lisson was recently recognised for her outstanding career achievements and contributions in the field of accounting. She is pictured here at Freemasons with her framed Fellowship of the Chartered Accountants Association certificate — well done, Ilma!
Congratulations,Ilma!
We thought this would be a great opportunity to remind our residents and relatives about how to get new clothes labelled to help prevent them from becoming lost.
1. Bring all new/unlabelled clothes to the front counter in reception in a plastic bag.
2. Our friendly receptionist will name the bag .
3. The bag will be collected by staff and taken to the laundry where the clothes will be labelled before being returned to your room.
If you have any questions, please speak to our friendly staff.

Meet BarbDonaldson
A few words from Barb
Having worked at Fred French and Peace Haven some years ago, I am known to some staff in the north. My husband Lawrie and I moved back to Tassie in February this year after spending eight years in Melbourne – we have spent the last five months renovating our house.
Theatre and travel are my favourite hobbies, and having a son and daughter working in the arts in Melbourne is a good excuse to head over, get my shopping fix, catch up with family and see a production.
What I’m looking forward to at MCT
The people are what makes MCT special. I think MCT has a vibrant future and I look forward to contributing to the growth of the organisation, and delivering a quality customer experience to our clients through the development of staff. I believe evidence-informed practice along with true innovation will see us as an industry role model and advocate for aged care services into the future.
