Bayers Hereford Ranch isMontana’s oldest Hereford herd!

Since 1918 we have sold genetics into 38 American states, Canada, Zimbabwe, Mexico, and Hungary. We have sold over 15,000 registered Herefords during this time. One

Wyoming ranch purchased 507 bulls from us over a period of ten years.

“Ringo” is our main herd sire that consistentlyproduces calves that have his length, pig-mented eyes and great disposition. His calveshave been our heaviest sire group. We havealso bred a number of Angus cows to Ringoand he improved weaning weights dramati-cally. Ringo should also be a strong maternalbull, being sired by 285M and out of our topproducing cow, 299. 299 has a BW Ratio of99; WW Ratio of 108; and YW ratio of 109.Ringo had BW ratio 99; WW Ratio 110; YWRatio 111.

614 is a deep ribbed, heavy muscled bull. Anideal bull for conformation, pigment and thick-ness. 614 has eye appeal, combined withpredictable carcass traits from his sire, Neon.First calf crop due February 2008.

HERD CHANGING GENETICSMEAT - MILK - CARCASS

Bismarck is a herd changer - he’s correct and thick, with tremendous muscle expression. Swing by this fall, see him and take a look at his calves. They’re deep bodied, thick butted and wide topped. Not your old style Herefords, Bismarck’s calves will add profit to your bottom line.

Hereford sired calves netted a $78advantage compared to Angus-siredcalves, in a real-world commercial setting, preliminary results of a three year studyshow.

The American Hereford Association(AHA) announced the first-year results ofa heterosis study being conducted incooperation with California StateUniversity, Chico; Lacey Livestock;Harris Feeding Co.; and Harris RanchBeef Co. The objective of the researchproject was to conduct a controlledcrossbreeding system, comparing progenysired by Hereford and Angus bulls, undercommercial conditions, emphasizing

HEREFORD HETEROSIS ADVANTAGE

economic differences at the ranch, feedlotand packing plant.

Ten Hereford bulls selected for specificexpected progeny differences (EPDs)were matched with 10 Angus bulls ofcomparable genetics. Bulls were randomlymated to 400 mature Angus-based cows. All calves were identified with electronicidentification (EID) tags and DNAsamples were taken to determineparentage. All cattle had equal access tocomparable feed resources andmanagement in extensive, relatively harshenvironments.

The differences in weaningperformance, feedlot performance, carcassvalue and overall profitability weremeasured on the Angus and Hereford siredcalves. According to Jack Ward, AHAchief operating officer and director ofbreed improvement, “Preliminary datasuggests a significant economic advantage

HEREFORD HETEROSIS ADVANTAGE

of $86 per head in the feedlot phase forthe Hereford-sired calves.

“Primary differences were gain, feedefficiency, morbidity and mortality, resulting in a lower cost of gain, $11.94per hundredweight (cwt.); which equatesto a $7.32 per cwt. difference whenmortality of the Angus-sired steers wasexcluded,” Ward said. He added that theAngus-sired group had a significantadvantage in quality grade, partiallyoffsetting the value in the feedlot.“However, the net advantage favored theHereford-sired cattle by nearly $78 perhead for the entire production cycle,”Ward said.

Ward explained heterosis is thesuperiority of the crossbreed progenycompared to the average of the parentbreeds. Maternal heterosis is the increasein calf performance due to the maternal

(continued from page 28) effect of the crossbred cow.All results of this study are based on

limited numbers from year one. Thebackgrounding, feedlot and carcass trialwill be repeated in 2008 and 2009.

The effect of maternal heterosis will bedetermined by tracking productivity of thereplacement heifers that were retained andidentified to a sire. The objective is toattempt to determine lifetime productivityand profitability differences between siregroups.
