The Pilgrimage Route to Santiago de Compostela

During Spring Break 2000, Professors Carlos Gutierrez and Kathy Lorenz led a study tour along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in

France and Spain.

The following 18 report is by Angie Woods, A&S. El Camino de Santiago

What if you could spend your Spring Break in France and Spain following a pilgrimage route which hundreds of thousands of people have taken over centuries? It's called El Amino de Santiago and it is a fabulous way to learn about Europe. More UC students were able to go thanks to IGSA's Program Support Fund. It made possible something which we would normally consider only a far off dream. There were thirteen students and

two professors, all of us different ages, ranging from nineteen to forty-something and all with different religious backgrounds, different levels of language competency and all with different experiences in foreign travel. We were a motley crew but we had at least one thing in common: the desire to embark on an adventure in a foreign land. Every part in us which makes us different made the trip that much more fun.

We arrived in Toulouse, France on St. Patrick's Day; we got to our hotel rooms at 3:30 and were expected to meet the bus for a tour by 4 pm. None of us had rested, showered or eaten anything but airplane food for an entire day, but that's part of the fur., too. We ' had a three hour tour of the city and by 8 pm we were ready to physically harm the tour guide even though he was funny and interesting. This is a small example of the entire trip. We should have known that this was part of the adven ture, too.

For the next eight days, we were given a wake-up call at 7 am and had to be on the bus by 8:30. We were taken on break-neck tours through many different cities: Toulouse, Albi, Cordes, Carcassone and Lourdes-and that was only France. Then there was Spain: Roncevalles, Pamplona, Santo Domingo Calzada, San Millan de Cocolla, Burgos, Carrion, Leon, Astorga, and finally Santiago. Our heads were swimming with information about Cathars, Jacobeans, Catholics and Moors. We saw architecture: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance. We learned of the various rulers, most importantly Alfonso VIII and Eleanor of Aquitaine and Pope Innocent 111. We got into the bus between stops and religiously pulled out our journals and

stared at them blankly. "Where did we just go?" was a commonly asked question. We would write down the information trying to straighten it out in our heads before Carlos, one of the professors would exclaim "Vamos a otra. iglesia!" Cathedral after cathedral, all beautiful, all amazing, but hard to keep track. Which was the one with stained glass? Oh, that was the one in Burgos. No, Leon, definitely Leon. This was part of the adventure, too.

We learned a lot. We tried a lot of different things, food being the most obvious one: octopus, shell fish, duck, crepes, rabbit. What was amazing to me was the general good spirit which existed in the group and how we all got along. Traveling can take its toll on anyone, but we never had a break out even when we were stranded in the Madrid Airport for seven hours. At least we got an extra day off school! Of course, our professors helped us out a lot. Kathy Lorenz successfully kept us all together. Carlos Guiterrez taught us the beauty of the Spanish language, even when arguing aggravatedly with airport personnel. If any one of us hadn't been there, the entire trip would have been different.

Learning so much so fast, traveling so great a distance in short time, at times I forgot why I was there. I'm not a religious person, so why am I on a pilgrimage? Of course, it was a study tour; we were learning more about the pilgrims and the pilgrimage than actually being pilgrims. But, when I stepped into the Cathedral of Santiago and looked up at the stone pillars that millions of people had gazed upon over centuries, it came to me why I was there. Yes, for some, it was an entirely religious experience, but for all I think it is something more-a pilgrimage of understanding. When I placed my

hand into the stone worn into the shape of a hand, I realized that this is what it was all about. So many people from all over the world have come together in Santiago and while they are there, all the conflicts of the world are forgotten. We came together and accomplished something in a foreign country where sometimes we didn't understand the language or the customs or what we were eating, but we did it anyway. And that's what it's all about.

Performers and performances included: African dance and drumming by Charles Miller (Drums for Peace) and Terri Brown; Chinese dance incorporating martial arts by H.T. Chen and Company, as well as a Japanese tea ceremony; and Panamanian dance and music by Que Lindo es Panama.

Gothic Paris TourWe returned safe and sound from Gothic Paris on June 21.Along with me and my daughter Anne, who was my Assistant Teacher on this trip, were 13 travelers: three undergraduate students, one graduate student, a law student from Harvard, a

fiancee, a husband, two best friends, our Director of Graduate Studies (an associate prof. in the English dept.) her sister, and their twelveyear-old daughters.

Our itinerary was very full: We arrived in Paris after noon and walked from our hotel through the Luxembourg gardens to the Latin Quarter and on to the island in the Seine to visit Notre Dame. To our dismay the facade of the church was covered with scaffolding and draped in canvas as workers continue the yearslong project of cleaning and restoring the stones.

We were tired from our flights and so we walked back to our hotel and had our evening meal in a typical neighborhood cafe eating omelettes, croque monsieurs, and salades aveyronnaises, sampling French beer and the lovely red wines.

We spent the second morning walking around the Ile de la Cite to get an idea of the boundaries of Paris in 1100. Everyone was much taken with a large, handsome white rooster wandering nonchalantly in the tiny park at the tip of the island and he features prominently in our photographs. From the island we took the Metro out to Pere LaChaise cemetery to visit the graves of the 12th century lovers Abelard and Heloise ... and Jim Morrison, of course, and Proust, Colette, Oscar Wilde, Isadora Duncan, Gertrude Stein, and Rossini as well. We provided paper and charcoal so that people could take grave rubbings of their favorite authors. The rest of the afternoon was free and we visited tourist sites or museums or other points of interest.

On the third day we visited the Gothic churches of St. Germain des Pres, St. Denis, and the Sainte Chapelle and traced the development of the Gothic style from the earlier Romanesque. The afternoon we spent at the Cluny, the old Roman baths which have become the national museum of the Middle Ages. The Cluny holds a huge number of medieval artifacts including the six famous tapestries of the Lady with the Unicorn. As the day before, the rest of the day and evening were free for us to pursue whatever lured us. We took the train outside the city on the fourth day to visit Chartres, the most impressive 12th century Gothic cathedral of them all. Many of our travelers report that this visit was the highlight of the trip for them despite the hour-long train ride. Nearly all said that they wanted to go back to Chartres for a second visit. The rest of the day

Page 12: McMicken Magazine is published by University of · 2020-02-05 · McMicken Magazine is published by University of ... During Spring Break 2000, Professors Carlos Gutierrez and Kathy

was free. Many went to the Picasso museum, the d'Orsay, or the Louvre. Saturday morning we went to the famous flea market at Clignancourt and spent many hours happily wandering through the narrow alleys marveling at all the strange and wonderful French "stuff" for sale. That evening we celebrated my birthday in a lounge provided by the hotel with a picnic we bought at an elegant Italian delicatessen on our street.

Sunday was a free day and we finally had a morning to sleep in. Most visited museums they had missed or shopped for a few final souvenirs. Some attended Mass at Notre Dame. The highlight of the trip was the engagement of Toni Petrenio and Justin Filia. Justin surprised Toni on the second day with a beautiful ring he had smuggled along. She said yes, and they are planning to be married a year from July. Toni and Justin are such a charming and delightful couple that we were all pleased to be a part of their engagement. The weather was superb and all the travelers intrepid. This is certainly the best of the six tours that I have conducted for UC.

The next Gothic Paris tour will be in June, 2001. The next English Department Study Tour will be led in June, 2000, by Professor John Drury to Literary Venice. He can certainly provide you with information about that trip since he has already led it once last June. Hope this gives you enough information. If not, do not hesitate to call or email Lowanne

By the time we left the cave three hours later, we were all feeling pretty confident in our caving abilities. But it was still a muddy slide up and out the tiny cave entrance. Molly says it’s nicknamed “the birthing canal,” and it lived up to its name. Which is more than I can say for the cave. “It’s a dry cave,” Molly had assured us. Look closely at the photos, and you have to wonder what a “wet cave” would look like. Between the muddy slide down the hillside and the final exit, there wasn’t a crew member that didn’t look like Dennis the Menace after a romp in the mud.

We were lucky though. Molly’s discovered that “baby wipes” make for easy post-caving cleanup, and we were able to make ourselves presentable enough to celebrate at the local Denny’s. Up next: The cave known as “Knee Shredder.” (Or maybe not! We hear it’s a “wet cave.”) — Chris Curran

B arbara B rady, a writer and one of V ialet’ s former students, said, “ I believe that every student has talents that won’ t be realized unless a teacher inspires them into existence. So much of the time, inspiration comes from being pushed. In Dr. V ialet’ s classes, it comes from being pulled.” V ialet has published three textbooks, and her scholarly publications include an article in the American Journal for Teachers of F rench on the use of opera in teaching French. V ialet said one of the things she appreciates about teaching at UC is “the diversity of students. T hey bring a lot of different experiences and common sense. We have young and not so young, A frican A merican students and students from abroad, many different countries. T hey seem to learn from each other, and I try to promote that in my classes. I think they like that.”

Michelle V ialet came to UC in 1985 and teaches courses in French composition, phonetics and grammar, and 17th century French literature. She also teaches Francophone literature and culture, which is the literature and culture of countries that use the French but are not part of France, such as North A frica, West A frica, Canada and the Caribbean. Originally from a small village in France, V ialet studied general linguistics at the University de L yon and University B esanton. She came to the United States through an exchange program she created between L yon and Penn State and studied social linguistics while completing her PhD in French.

“B e kind to the poet, but tough on the poems.” T he words can be found on John Drury’ s syllabus, encouraging students in his poetry workshop to share their thoughts without destroying the confidence of nervous new writers. T he novice writers also say they appreciate Drury’ s use of an innovation he calls “the Primary R eader.” T he reader is a student he assigns to lead the critique of a classmate’ s poem during in-class discussion. Drury likens the technique to the “crits” commonly used in art studios. A fter a student writer reads a piece aloud in class, the author must keep silent as the Primary R eader makes comments, followed by comments from other classmates and then Drury, who could be an intimidating critic if he chose to be. His own poems have been published in prominent journals plus a collection

John Drurycalled The Disappearing Town, and his byline appears on two texts that are headed for second printings, The Poetry Dictionary and Creating Poetry. On the faculty at UC since 1985, Drury insists his job is not only to encourage students to write but also to examine other writers’ work. “ I try to teach what I consider ‘ maximalist courses.’ I assign a lot of writing exercises, and they’ re always connected to specific poems that serve as models. I want to show the students that writing poetry depends on reading it. B ut I also want them to value their own experiences, such as jobs they’ ve had and interests they pursue. A nything can work its way into poetry, as long as the language is inventive and suggestive. I want to show them that poetry is something they can enjoy and get excited about.”

T homas Sakmyster has faced more than his share of border guards and luggage searches in pursuit of Hungarian history even after the fall of Communism. Just two years ago, Sakmyster and his wife were awakened at 3 a.m. by border guards demanding to see their passports on a train making its way across Slovakia. “T he guard kept us awake for 45 minutes to an hour just to show us, I think, that they can still do it,” says Sakmyster, UC’ s Walter C. L angsam Professor of E uropean History and a member of the history department in the McMicken College of A rts and Sciences since 1971. T he longstanding E ast—West hostilities and obstacles, however, have never prevented him from persisting. With the help of a Hungarian professor, Sakmyster gained access to archives and records kept locked inside the then Soviet bloc. T he assistance proved valuable in Sakmyster’ s compilation of his first book,

Hungary, the Great Powers and the Danubian Crisis, 1936-1939, published in 1980, and his widely acclaimed second book, which examines one of E urope’ s most controversial 20th century statesmen. Hungary’ s Admiral on Horseback: Miklos Horthy, 1918-1944 was the first full length biography of the regent who headed Hungary during the difficult 24 years between Hungary’ s World War I defeat and the closing months of World WarI I . Sakmyster was awarded the Order of Merit of the Hungarian R epublic in 1992 for his contributions to Hungarian culture. He also serves as the associate editor of An E ncyclopedia of Modern E ast E uropean History, just published by Garland Press.

T he year 2000 has also been witness to the end of thirteen years of dedicated service by Professor Joseph Caruso, as he left the office of the Dean of A rts & Sciences to

pursue his research in chemistry. (see p.26) Stepping in to fill the void, Professor

of Mathematics Charles Groetsch is assuming the responsibility of leading the College of A rts & Sciences into the new millennium.

B orn in New Orleans, L ouisiana, in 1945, Dean Groetsch received his B S and MA from the University of New Orleans in 1966 and 1968. He received his PhD from

L ouisiana State University in 1971. Since then the professor has been well traveled. His experience stems from a variety of employment including the A pplied

Mathematics Department at the B oeing Company (1966), Mathematics Instructor for University of New Orleans (1968), and various professorships at University of

R hode Island and our very own University of Cincinnati. Dean Groetsch is also knows internationally at the Universitaet K aisersl autern and the Forschungsinstitut fuer

Mathematik in Germany, and University of Queensland and Centre for Mathematical A nalysis, A ustralian National University in A ustralia.

Chuck is also very active in mathematics, serving on numerous editorial boards such as the Numerical Functional A nalysis and Optimization, SIA M R eview, and the

E lectronic Journal of Differential E quations. He has also been referee for more than 45 journals in mathematics, physics, computing, and engineering. He also served as

the chair for the Institute for Mathematics and Its A pplications Conference Selection Committee. A ll of this while remaining a member of thirteen other organizations. T he new dean’ s efforts have not gone without recognition. In the spring of 1979 he was honored as an E xchange Scientist by the National A cademy of Sciences –

A kademie der Wissenschaften der DDR . He became the first recipient of the A rts & Science’ s McMicken Dean’ s A ward for Distinguished Scholarship in 1991, and was

honored as a Fellow of the Graduate School, by the University also that year. In 1994 he was awarded the George Polya A ward by the Mathematical A ssociation of

A merica and the Faculty A chievement A ward by the University of Cincinnati.

I t would seem that beyond all of the awards and other distinguishing marks, Dean Groetsch is concerned most about learning – in particular taking some of the mystery

out of math. He has done some rather extensive research in Numerical

A third-year honors student, L isa K athumbi is studying international relations and women’ s studies. A fter earning her bachelor’ s degree, she plans to continue her studies at UC in the joint degree program in law and women’ s studies. Her ultimate goal is an international legal career focusing on advocacy for women. She has worked as an intern in the United States Sixth Circuit Court of A ppeals and will serve another internship this summer in Costa R ica. In addition to her studies and internships, she works on campus as a resource educator in UC’ s Women’ s Center and is involved in Students Organized A gainst R ape. She also volunteers in community organizations including NA A CP, the Cincinnati Y outh Collaborative mentoring program and Women Helping Women. She is a member of Sigma Pi, the women’ s service honorary, Cincinnati Women in E xcellence and Spirit T ogether, a leadership

organization, and Mortar B oard.

Despite losing his eyesight just three years ago, Michael L ieterman remains a serious and committed student. He is currently majoring in biology and after graduation plans to pursue a degree in advocacy law. A lthough dependent on note takers and other disability accommodations, his ability is clearly demonstrated in his academic performance. His teachers find him intellectually capable of mastering the material and helpful in rethinking their approaches to working with students with special needs. His abilities are also evident in his work as a resident assistant in Calhoun Hall. His supervisor in the dorm says Mike consistently makes a positive impact as a live-in mentor to all the residents on his floor. In conjunction with UC’ s Office of Disabilities, he has worked to place the university’ s ability to adapt science-related material for the blind on par with national leaders.

Described by several E nglish professors as one of the best students they’ ve ever taught, Will T oedtman turned to literature and creative writing after a debilitating case of tendinitis brought his studies in Jazz Guitar to an end. He now writes poetry with the elegance, sophistication and verve that you expect from a prize-winning guitarist. Now he’ s winning prizes in poetry. One of his teachers say his work is “stunning,” “ insightful,” “penetrating,” “original” , “brilliant.” A nother finds him “deeply creative and intuitive, but also rigorously

analytical.” After graduation, he plans to continue his studies, possibly at Johns Hopkins for an MA and University of Iowa for an MFA. In addition to his own writing, he has worked as a tutor for three years in the Freshman English Writing Lab, an experience which, he acknowledges, has made him a better writer and reader.

A biochemistry major, Shannon McArthur carries a 3.96 GPA. As a freshman, she earned the Department of Chemistry’s award for the highest achieving first-year student and in her sophomore year she won the department’s award for highest achieving chemistry major in Organic Chemistry. Her General Physics professor says Shannon can compete with the best physics or engineering students. On her own, Shannon has extended her learning beyond the classroom. Two years ago, she took a job at Shriner’s Burns Hospital working in the research lab that cultures skin for burn patients. That experience has inspired her to find more research opportunities. She found one in the Women, Gender and Science project sponsored by Women’s Studies. Her project involved mapping a region of a peptide that mimicked a portion of the V3 loop of the HIV virus. After graduation she is considering pharmaceutical research or medical school.

R esolving to major in both anthropology and Spanish, Jennifer Dumont knew she had significant challenges before her, but she has never regretted her decision. In fact, she has discovered that her two interests reinforce each other and have led to some unique opportunities for further learning. T wo years ago, she spent a semester in L ima, Peru honing her language skills while taking anthropology classes as well as a Quechua language class. She plans to apply for a Fulbright grant after she graduates next year in order to travel to B olivia

to study the affects of tourism on self-identity in A ndean cultures. On campus she is involved in several student organizations including Club Hispano, the Undergraduate A ssociation of A nthropology and L atinos en A ccion. She was named to Phi B eta K appa in her in junior year, an honor few students receive. She is also a member of Golden K ey National Honor

Society.

Taking a mother’s advice isn’t always the easiest thing for college freshmen to do, especially when they’re facing their

first chance to live away from home. But as a freshman entering UC in the fall of 1999, Erin Gray’s glad she listened to her mother. The mother counseled her 18-year-old daughter to sign up for an experimental program that would allow Erin to take most of her courses at UC with the same group of students or “cohort,” taught by faculty whose subject areas were coordinated through a special section of Freshman English. This way Erin got to make friends easily. Though she was skeptical when she learned about the program during summer orientation, Erin now is so thankful she had the opportunity to join “the Cohort” that she calls it the most helpful resource she has found in her adjustment from high school to college.

The impact on Erin and other freshmen involved in her cohort is precisely why UC expanded this approach beginning in fall 2000. Heading up the learning communities effort is Wayne Hall, the associate dean in A&S and the English professor who spearheaded and taught Erin’s cohort in Freshman English. He has been appointed by Provost Anthony Perzigian as UC’s learning community facilitator, or czar, to take the approach university-wide, armed with a two-year $225,000 Success Challenge grant. The funding is available through the state of Ohio.

The aim of the learning community approach is to improve student retention by providing first-year students with a ready-made vehicle to build a sense of community.

Hall’s successfully met his goal of launching 20 learning—community cohorts by fall 2000. These typically involved two or three courses per quarter, most of them offered within A & S. In coming years, he hopes to expand this initiative, especially within other colleges at UC.

“Learning communities is a concept that has been around for a while, but it has not been widely used until the last six or seven years. Research by Vincent Tinto, the guru of retention, has shown that especially in large universities, learning communities give the students a chance to get to know one another, and they improve student retention,” said Hall, who will be building upon a foundation that began with two learning communities, “Mick” and “Mack,” piloted by Howard Tolley, professor of political science, in 1997-98.

According to Perzigian, the learning community’s effort is consistent with provostal goals of the UC Collaboration for Student Success. Expanding the learning cohort concept became a key point in the university’s application for Success Challenge funds from the state, according to Linda Cain, associate provost who served on a committee that reviewed and revised the application. It also was a recommendation made by UC’s Strategic Enrollment Management retention work group, according to work group member Russell Curley, director of Educational Services.

“In a large university, it is very possible for a student to fail to develop a connection to the campus, and this is especially true for a commuting campus. Because of that lack of attachment, students are far more likely to drop out. The learning community can provide the connection that some students might not otherwise have an opportunity to have. “It also helps students to make links between their courses, so it enriches both the educational experience and the social experience,” he said.

Both Erin and her mother, Vicki Brunn of Findlay, Ohio, can vouch for that. “I have been really happy with it,” said Brunn, herself a teacher of high school juniors. “The biggest way it helped her was to give her a smaller school within the large university. She has talked about being very happy with the professors she had. She’s made a lot of really good friends.”

ArsenicArsenic poses both environmental and biological hazards, and can be both toxic and carcinogenic depending on the particular species. We continue to develop methods for identifying and

quantifying the various arsenic forms. Since species conversion can occur, a toxic form may become less toxic and the reverse is true as well. Recent studies have included determining the

arsenic species in fish purchased from local markets. Not too worry though, the major and almost exclusive form of arsenic is known as arsenobetaine, a non-toxic form of the element.

We are beginning studies utilizing plants to remove arsenic from contaminated soils. The interest is to investigate the nature of the arsenic species in various parts of the plant vs. those forms

in the soil or growth medium. If a particular arsenic species is predominant in the plant, certain chemical agents might be added to the arsenic contaminated soils that will cause the

predominant arsenic species to form more efficiently. Hence, remediating the soil will be more effectively done.

SeleniumSelenium is necessary to life and is now thought to act as a cancer chemopreventive agent if taken in the appropriate amounts and forms. However, in high amounts selenium is harmful to

living organisms including humans.

Selenium may replace sulfur in several amino acids (the building blocks of life) if plants or yeasts are grown in selenium-enriched environments. We have recently completed selenium

speciation studies for selenium enriched yeast dietary supplements, which are very widely available. In almost all cases, the reported selenium species was not in agreement with label values

on the bottle. In attempts to explain this we are studying laboratory grown selenium enriched yeasts under different growth regimens. Further, we are hoping to gain insights to selenium

cancer chemopreventive mechanisms by identifying the selenium species involved. Studies include examining several genetic modifications of selenium-enriched yeast to determine if

selenium interacts differently with the different yeast types and therefore, is utilizing or producing different selenium species.

of the surviving examples of music from antiquity take the form of scraps of paper papyri, or ancient waste paper. Johnson’s web site focuses on two scraps of papyri that represent what Johnson believes to be professional performance pieces. Although they’re from the Roman era, they’re written in ancient Greek, because Romans regarded their musical tradition as Greek, just like many other aspects of their culture. “,The musical guilds were and thought of themselves as Greek,” the classical scholar explains.

With just a click of the mouse and the latest version of QuickTime 4 installed, on their computers, web surfers can hear an ancient vocal piece for baritone performed by Christopher Brunelle, assistant professor of classics at Vanderbilt University, and an instrumental fragment performed by former College-Conservatory of Music oboe student Kimberly Potter. Johnson decided the oboe was the closest modem equivalent to the ancient aulos, a This fragment of music for voice from ancient Rome, contains references to violets and narcissus, singing to the muses, Apollo, the god of prophecy, and Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. Only half the lines remain on the surviving piece.

tunes. “Compared to music today, both pieces sound a little odd,” Johnson points out. “ I t’ s because they’ re based on a different musical structure than we use now. R ather than the octave, their underpinning is the tetrachord, or half-octave.”

While scholars still can’ t say precisely what the melodies of ancient Greek poet Sappho or the choruses of Greek dramatist Sophocles may have sounded like, they do know more than you might think about ancient Western music, Johnson says. “We know quite a lot,” he says. “We know a great deal about the rhythms of the music, since these are reflected in the metrical patterns of Greek verse. We know much about the musical system, that is, how the scales were conceived and the like. We can infer much about the instruments, using as evidence surviving fragments of ancient instruments, depictions on vases and wall paintings, literary descriptions and cross-cultural comparison.” His two articles on the pair of fragments are due to appear in the annual Journal of Hellenic Studies this fall and the B ulletin of the A merican Society of Papyrologists to be published this winter.

B oth pieces came to Johnson’ s attention through curators of papyri collections at other universities. T he first piece comes from a tattered piece of paper purchased by the B einecke Manuscript and R are B ooks L ibrary at Y ale University. B efore its arrival at Y ale, it had been purchased early in the 20” century by a collector, along with other scraps of papyri, from a dealer in Cairo, E gypt. T he second scrap had been mistakenly catalogued for decades in the papyri collection at the University of Michigan until a curator recognized it as a possible musical piece and asked Johnson to look at it.

Johnson obliged, spending hours at both libraries examining the papyri under his microscope and studying photographs of each. He now jokes that he has spent more time looking through a microscope than his brother, a molecular biologist, has. Johnson’ s classics expertise proved essential in understanding the musical fragments with their Greek text and notations. Without his knowledge of piano playing and reading music, however, he would not have been able to learn as much as he did about the historic

Join us on Saturday, February 17th,

to help Cincinnati celebrate the

great rivalry between Xavier and UC

by giving back to our community.

About the Crosstown HelpoutThe Crosstown Helpout is an annual volunteer event that provides clean-up and basic repairs for local area schools. As the name implies, the event

is a take-off on the Crosstown Shootout basketball game between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University. Alumni staff and volunteers

from both the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University communities jointly plan the event.

Community

Our goal is to develop this event as a way to build our community. In the past we have had some schools that enlisted the help of students, teachers,

parents and neighbors to multiply the output of the event. We are concentrating on developing this aspect more this year. It truly becomes a

community event when we have our volunteers working side by side with the community. Also, we are able to leave something behind after the

event is completed.

Crosstown Help-Out XU Alumni Association 3800 Victory Parkway Cincinnati, OH 45207-2711

The Event

The event is held on Saturday, February 17 and usually kicks-off around 8-9 a.m. with registration and breakfast. We hit the schools by 10, and

work until about 3 p.m., or until the project is finished. Each school has a team captain, who is responsible for assessing the school’s needs,

informing Home Depot of the materials required, and coordinating the team of volunteers on the day of the event.

After the work comes the play. Volunteers return for a party which includes food, music, prizes, and other fun things. One of the top prizes every

year has been a pair of tickets to the following year’s Crosstown Shootout basketball game. The student alumni groups at both universities host the

post party, and do a terrific job! The event is alternately hosted on the two schools’ campuses.

Currently, breakfast and after party food is provided. The volunteers bring their own lunch to eat at the work site. As we develop our sponsorship,

we hope to provide food and drinks for the day.

1935. He earned all three of his academic degrees in classics at UC, among them a BA in 1939, a master’s in 1941 and a PhD in 1947.

As a student, Bennett spent more time in the classroom with Blegen than he did in the archaeological field. He spent only three weeks in the field with the elder archaeologist, who gained a world reputation for his discoveries at Troy and at the Palace of Nestor in Pylos, Greece. Yet Blegen’s discovery of hundreds of clay tablets bearing an unreadable script became the focus of Bennett’s life work. Sir Arthur Evans had uncovered 1,500 examples of Linear B script at Knossos from 1900 to1904, but Blegen’s first collection of Pylos tablets, found in 1939, provided a more comprehensive look at the ancient Mycenaean writing system.

Bennett’s meticulous and systematic analysis of the Linear B script led to its decoding by British scholar Michael Ventris in 1952. Within three months of obtaining Bennett's studies, Ventris changed his approach and cracked its code, according to Thomas Palaima, director of the Program for Aegean Scripts and Prehistory at the University of Texas and a former student of Bennett’s. Ever since, Bennett has been known as the founding father of the study of this Mycenaean script.

While the medal salutes Bennett for his scholarly achievements, he is also known as a great teacher. After obtaining his PhD at UC, Bennett took a teaching post in 1947 at Yale, leaving in 1958 for the University of Texas. He joined the University of Wisconsin (Madison) faculty in 1959 and retired in 1988.

Just a few years ago, Bennett served as an advisory board member in the Pylos Regional Archaeological Project headed by Jack Dav is, UC's Carl W. Blegen Professor of

Greek Archaeology,

University of Cincinnati archaeologist Carl W. Blegen won the first Gold Medal for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement awarded by the Archaeological Institute of America in 1965. This year, the prize is going to one of Blegen’s students. The 11,000-member AIA presented its Gold Medal to UC alumnus Emmett Bennett Jr. on Jan. 4 during its 102nd annual meeting in San Diego.

Bennett, 82, founded a field of study centered on the ancient Greek script called Linear B, which was used to write the oldest readable text known in Europe. He is currently a professor emeritus of the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and a visiting scholar at University of Texas - Austin. The Minneapolis native grew up in Chicago, Cleveland and Cincinnati, graduating from Hughes High School in

There are three other major achievements by Bennett that the AIA medal recognizes, according to Palaima:

* His first publication, appearing in 1950 in the American Journal of Archaeology, on the Minoan 40

fractional system. This piece of scholarship still stands as the authoritative word on the topic, even after five decades.

* His 1959 publication of preliminary studies on the handwriting styles and writing characteristics found on the Linear B clay tablets from Pylos. This research into text layout, script and other characteristics broke the ground for other scholars to identify the scribes who had written the tablets.

* His founding in 1957 of the bibliographic periodical, Nestor, the primary communications vehicle for Greek prehistorians worldwide. Bennett ran Nestor solo for 20 years. Since 1995, it has operated out of the UC classics department.

Palaima was a doctoral student under Bennett at University of Wisconsin. “I luckily got the advice when I went to graduate school to look around for a dissertation adviser I would like,” said Paliama. “Emmett has always been that for me. As you know, sometimes scholars can be overly fond of their own ideas, but Bennett has always invited critical examination of his own ideas.” Bennett’s honors prior to the Gold Medal have included The Gold Cross of the Order of Honor from the Greek government (the highest honor presented to foreigners) and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. He is an honorary councilor of the Archaeological Society of Athens. Locally, Bennett has ties to the Cincinnati radio scene. He is the brother of retired WGUC classical music commentator Myron Bennett.

What does a UC student do when he or she needs to declare a major? How do students decide what to do with their majors? T he Career

Development Center’ s Career Navigator offers an answer to both of these questions.

Career Navigator is a free, six stage program designed to assist students who are undecided in either their major or career goals. T hrough Career

Navigator, students engage in self-assessment, develop career decision-making skills, and gain an awareness of the world of work.

Career Navigator also features a quarterly Professional Forum that enables students to learn about potential careers and talk with professionals

about their occupations. Groups of students participate in roundtable discussions with each participating professional. Professionals are encouraged

to talk about their own career development, pros and cons of the field, job outlook, education or training requirements, and other relevant

information; this allows students to become more informed about various occupations.

A re you willing to share your career experiences with the Career Navigator participants? I f you would like to participate or if you know someone

who would be interested in participating in a professional forum, please contact Sarah Dorr at 513.556.0319 or Sarah.Dorr@ UC.edu.

Among a number of student–centered initiative sponsored and funded by the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, of particular note is the UC Mock Trial Team.

Who are they? The UC Mock Trial Team is a continuing member of the National American Mock Trial Association. As such, the purpose of the Mock Trial Team is to educate undergraduate students about the American legal system, its jurisprudence and the work of American attorneys. To that end, the teaching of critical thinking, speaking and listening skills within an adversary courtroom setting is emphasized. The educational function in all Mock Trial activities is primary and any
