MCITP / Server 2008 Certification Overview

In late 2005, Microsoft shocked the certification world by announcing that their extraordinarily successful and lucrative educational program, the Microsoft Certified System Engineer, was going to be replaced by an entirely new certification series – the Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional.

In spite of the general confusion following Microsoft’s decision to scrap their MCSE program, there was a method to the madness. For one, Microsoft hoped to clarify the confusion surrounding the word “engineer.” In other countries, including most of Europe, in order to classify as an engineer, you had to possess a professional engineer’s license – not just an MCSE. In the US, a similar problem was developing, whereby IT professionals would call themselves engineers upon completion of the program, when in fact their job role signified something else entirely.

The ultimate answer to this was to create a new series of role based certifications that would specify a person’s actual job, instead of a generalized title. Microsoft picked four different titles for the adjustment. The Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional includes:

• Database Administrator

• Database Programmer

70-431 / 70-432 Exam DescriptionThe 70-431 and 70-432 exams are the initial Microsoft Certified Technology specialist exams on SQL Server 2005 and 2008. These exams test the candidate’s ability to execute SQL queries, understand the interpretive language, and administer a database. During these exams, candidates will be asked questions on SQL statements, as well as procedures for the SQL 2005 / 2008 administration process.

70-640 Exam DescriptionThe 70-640 exam on Active Directory tests a student’s understanding of the Active Directory infrastructure on the site, forest, and domain level. This includes the creation of users accounts, the organization of OUs, group design, site links, and computer integration across multiple platforms and trust links.

70-642 Exam DescriptionWith the 70-642 exam on Network Design, candidates further demonstrate their understanding of a Windows Server 2008 network by showing their understanding of subnetting, network protocols, Windows Server specific network rules, system event logging, and auditing and control access. During this exam, candidates focus more upon network communication than upon network objects, and it is considered the “most difficult” of the Server 2008 MCTS exams.

70-643 Exam Description70-643 vigorously tests a candidate’s ability to understand Terminal Services within Server 2008. This includes Terminal Services gateways, Remote Desktop, Remote Assistance, and various other application and presentation layer technologies, including Sharepoint, IIS, and other server-specific application packages. 70-643 is not required for the MCITP Server Administrator path, but is required for the MCITP Enterprise Administrator path.

70-620 Exam DescriptionExam 70-620 on Windows Vista tests the candidate’s ability to administer general end user desktop support issues on Windows Vista, including admin-istration of the User Account Control system, joining domains, and general support issues.

70-646 Exam DescriptionThe less intense of the two available MCITP paths, the 70-646 exam concentrates on the professional use of Windows Server 2008 for a single to five server environment. This includes the use of common consolidation tasks, domain joining, forest restructuring, and other such commonly used tasks in a medium business sized network. The exam questions are longer in format, and require knowledge from both the 70-640 and 70-642 exam.

70-647 Exam DescriptionThe Enterprise Administrator MCITP is the most difficult exam of the System Administrator path. It tests a candidate’s knowledge of Terminal Services, Network Design, and Active Directory. In order to pass this exam, you have to possess an intimate knowledge of Windows Server and the components and features there within. Additionally, you need to have experience troubleshooting large-scale deployments across multiple WAN links.

70-443 / 70-451 Exam BreakdownWith the MCITP exams on Database Server Infrastructure, candidates are able to demonstrate their ability to design database architectures based around CPU, memory, and physical constraints and requirements. Furthermore, candidates are expected to demonstrate an understanding of consolidation, business requirements, encryption, and SQL’s integration with Active Directory.

70-444 / 70-450 Exam DescriptionOn these exams, candidates are expected to optimize database solutions that take into account performance infrastructure concerns such as fault toler-ance, logic efficiency, and management integration services, including SQL Server Integration Services. These exams also focus on server-level security strategies and data replication.
