JOIN US AS WE ROCK THE RED

We’ve always prided ourselves on the product we’ve put on the field. McGill teams are exciting to watch and regularly vie for both regional and national championships. Our student athletes wear the M with pride and put it all out there every time they pull on a McGill jersey.

As proud as I am of their dedication to sport, I’ve always wished that our athletes had a large boisterous crowd cheering on their efforts. But that’s been a challenge. The draw of Montreal’s nightlife and an unrelenting academic schedule makes the stands hard to fill.

So it’s with great pleasure that I welcome our new McGill Cup and Red Zone initiatives aimed at making it more fun to cheer on the home team. Pitting residence against residence to see who are the loudest and proudest, the McGill Cup will bring some life to our home games. And the addition of the Red Zone, a student only cheering section, complete with great music, an in-crowd animator and a pro-McGill vibe, will make everyone want to “rock the red”.

If you have yet to attend a McGill varsity home game, come and enjoy this unique university experience. Pull on your red and white, buy a drink and a hot dog, join in on the McGill cheer and get in on the action.

W hen you think of McGill, school spirit isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But that’s about to change. Athletics and Recreation,

Student Housing and Hospitality Services and the Office of Student Life and Learning and have teamed up to offer students a unique opportunity to get in-volved in campus life.

The McGill Cup pits residence against residence to see which rez attends the most varsity games with the winner awarded a $5,000 VIP Victory Party for their squad. Every rez student who attends a McGill home game will receive a point for their team, with some games worth double the points. Team stand-ings will be updated weekly until the last McGill home game after which a winner will be crowned.

To make the pot even sweeter, all rez students will get into varsity games for free if they show up wearing their McGill Cup t-shirt provided free of charge on move-in day to every McGill student living in residence.

School spirit gets a boost as students

“We want to build the type of team spirit on dis-play at American schools, but with our own unique McGill look and feel,” said Drew Love, executive director of Athletics and Recreation. “We have some of the best teams in the country who deliver week after week on the field and we’re hoping the McGill Cup will encourage more students to show off their pride in their teams and their school.”

The lack of McGill spirit on campus has been the focus of recent Town Halls, with students lamenting the absence of an athletic culture at McGill. The McGill Cup hopes to change all that by making cheering for the home team not just fun, but a competition in itself. With rivalries in the stands as well as on the field, varsity games will be a whole new experience.

Mathieu Laperle, director of Food and Hospital-ity Services, hopes the spirit generated by the Mc-Gill Cup will carry over into the residences making varsity game days something to look forward to.

“We’re proud to get involved in the McGill Cup which we believe will promote team spirit and ca-maraderie as part of the rez life experience,” said Laperle.

With the teams divided by residence, the points will be adjusted so that residences both big and small can vie for the Cup. And during McGill Cup Hype Games, when cheering from the stands

is worth double the points, teams can give their point total a significant boost by getting more of their rez mates out to the games.

Also new this year is the launch of the new Red Zone reserved for all McGill Cup participants, Red Thunder members and any other McGill student who wants the very best of fan experiences. Fans can win prizes for best cheer gear, best social me-dia posts, best cheers and just because we think they’re doing a great job “rockin’ the red.” McGill Cup participants can also win bonus points for their team by making the Red Zone rock.

Social media posts will be a key part of the Red Zone fan experience. #McGillCup, #Rock-TheRed and #RedZone hashtags will be trending on game day with fans sharing their photos and videos of game day prep, cheer squads and the fun in the stands.

For everyone in the McGill community who isn’t in rez, there are plenty of opportunities to jump on the band wagon. Red Thunder, a student group dedicated to boosting school spirit, provides an all-access pass to McGill varsity games as well as a t-shirt and other membership-only privileges to anyone who signs up. Winner of the Student Society of McGill University’s “Best New Student Group” in 2010, Red Thunder is one of the biggest and loudest groups on campus.

The McGill Cup will kick off with a launch party on September 4th, welcoming all rez teams. The festivities include a series of challenges where teams can earn their first set of McGill Cup points. The Martlets and Redmen will be on hand to meet, greet and cheer on the teams. Food and drink will be served and the fun is guaranteed. Huge prizes will be awarded for exceptional demonstrations of school pride and spirit.

After the launch party, the official open-ing of the Red Zone will be at the first Redmen football home game September 12 7pm against cross-town rival the Concordia Stingers #Sting-TheStingers. It will be our first Hype Game night for McGill Cup participants and a loud and noisy affair in the stands. We’ll be kicking off things in style with lots of action both in the stands and on the field.

So shake off your apathy and #RockTheRed. Visit the McGill Cup Facebook page for details and follow the action on social media using #McGill-Cup. Keep your eye on the McGill Athletics and Recreation Facebook page as well for #Red Zone contests and game promotions.

See you in the stands.

ATHLETE PROFILE McGILL GOLF TEAM’S BENOIT MIQUEL Jill Barker

If asked to write an essay on how he spent his summer vacations, Benoit Miquel would have a best seller on his

hands. Two years ago he crewed on a 45-foot sailboat that crossed the Atlantic from the Caribbean island of St. Martin to France on a 34-day odyssey.

“We fished every day and I didn’t catch one fish,” laughed the third year civil engineering student and member of the McGill golf team.

This year, instead of sailing the ocean or staying in France where he spends most summers, he was in California on a two-month research internship at UCLA in his field of structural engineering.

Miquel’s love of travel comes naturally. The child of French ex-pats, he’s lived in so many countries he struggles to call one place home. That said, he admits to being attached to Houston, Texas where he went to high school and played golf for the school team.

“When I go through immigration they always ask me where I’m from,” he said. “I say France, even though I’ve never lived there. I’ve never spent more than four years in any one country.”

As to where he picked up his love of golf, Miquel attributes that to his father who introduced him to the game.

“Out of four kids, I was the only one who caught on to golf,” said Miquel who admits that he lives to pick up his clubs and get on the course.

That passion for the game has done Miquel well, winning the McGill golf team’s MVP award two years in a row (2012-13 and 2013-14) and contributing to an upstart win by the underdog Redmen team at the ETS Match Play event last fall. The tournament featured 12 Quebec university teams and was the first tournament win for McGill in six decades.

“It’s a small team, but we’ve created something very special” said Miquel of his experience playing for the Redmen. “Some of my best memories of McGill are of the golf team.”

But it’s not just his teammates that have

made his experience so great. Miquel says the Quebec university golf league run by the RSEQ is very well organized which makes it a pleasure to play in tournaments. It’s also a small community that has come to know each other both on and off the links.

“All the guys at the other universities are great,” he said of his fellow golfers. “We go at each other while we’re on the course, but we also share a drink together afterward.”

As for what brought him to McGill, Miquel says he couldn’t see himself at any other school. Drawn to its reputation for stellar academics and to Montreal’s nightlife, which is within steps of the downtown campus, Miquel also likes the international flavour of McGill’s student body and the friendliness of

the McGill community.

“It’s the best decision I have ever made,” he said of his choice to attend McGill.

Coach Bob Dubeau’s pretty happy with Miquel’s decision too. He appreciates the work ethic, consistency and attitude he brings to the team.

“He’s doesn’t let a bad shot or bad day get him down,” said Dubeau. “He been our most consistent player over the past two years and is deserving of his MVP honours.”

Now in the last year of his degree program, Miquel’s time at in Montreal is winding down. But no matter where he globetrots in the future, we hope that he will always call McGill home.

TOP 11 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE McGILL SPORTS COMPLEXWhat does the Athletics fee, that I pay as part of my tuition, cover? The Athletics fee funds the running of the Sports Complex including the programming and services like sports, recreation and the varsity program and includes all expenses related to heating, lighting and cleaning. All students are considered members of the Sports Complex which means you have free access to the gyms, pool, indoor and outdoor track, indoor and outdoor tennis courts and fields as well as free use of select pieces of equipment like balls and some training equipment.

What do I have to pay for? There are user fees for fitness and recreation classes, intramurals sports, room rentals, some arena activities like shinny hockey and rec skating, some equipment rentals (squash and tennis racquets, eye guards, cross country skis, boots and poles and snow-shoes) and membership to the Fitness Centre ($30.00 U-Grads, $40.00 Grads).

How do I find my way around the Sports Complex? The Sports Complex encompasses not just the building the gym is housed in, but also the playing fields (Molson and Forbes) and the arena. There are directional signs on the walls and suspended from the ceiling in most large common areas. Just in case, here is a primer for getting around the gym:

Basement level: Fitness Centre and activity rooms (Mind/Body, Spin, Combat and Aerobics rooms) Main floor: Client Services, Redbird Sports Shop, administration offices, cafeteria, women’s locker room, equipment desk, pool 1st floor: Gyms, men’s locker room, fieldhouse 2nd floor: Kinesiology and physical education department, Marketing and Communications office3rd floor: Sports Medicine, Kinesiology and physical education labs

Can I come to the gym and do my own thing?Sure. We have open gym times when activity areas are available for free use. Look on the Athletics and Recreation website for a list of drop in recreational hours (Facilities/schedules) or feel free to use any of the gyms and the fieldhouse if the schedule indi-cates that nothing is booked.

What about if I want to play a pickup game of soccer or basketball? We have drop in times for soccer, badminton, volleyball, basketball, water polo, ultimate disc and more. Check the Drop In Rec page on the Athletics and Recreation webpage for an up to date list of hours and activities.

Do I need to bring my own sports equipment? The equipment desk loans out equipment like basketballs and volleyballs, but you need to bring your own racquets or pay a nomi-nal fee to get a tennis or squash racquet on loan. The Redbird Sports Shop sells some equipment like pool goggles, bathing suits, squash and table tennis balls.

Where can I keep my sports gear? You can rent a basket for a semester or full year and keep your gear at the gym or you can bring your gear and your own lock and put your stuff in a locker designated for day use. Day lockers must be emptied and locks removed at the end of every day.

How do I sign up for fitness and rec courses and intramurals? Our on-line system facilitates registration for fitness and recreations courses and intramural teams, court bookings, the purchase of Fitness Centre memberships and lockers. Payment is by credit card only. You can also register in person in the Client Services office located on the main floor of the Sports Centre. Cash, credit and debit are accepted.

Where do I buy tickets to varsity games?Tickets are on sale ($5.00 for students, $10.00 general admission) in the Redbird Sports Shop (main level) and at the door of all varsity events. Students are also on lower campus selling tickets in advance of game day, which is a great way to pick up tickets at a reduced price.

Do you have a sports clinic where I can get an athletic injury checked out? You’ll find a comprehensive sport medicine clinic on the 3rd floor of the McGill Sports Centre. McGill students get preferred rates and can often see a physician within a couple of days of calling for an appointment (514-398-7007).

What do I do if I have a question or complaint? Our doors are always open so drop in any of the administrative offices to speak to members of the Athletics and Recreation staff. You can also forward your questions or complaints through e-mail at [email protected] or [email protected]
