The following is taken from an interview with Nigel, as posted in the AGM Blog: I definitely wanted to capture the surreal beauty of this desolate inhospitable environment that continually changed every 10 km that we travelled. The salt flats had the appearance of snow and there was a heat haze over the valley floor. Either side of the valley mountains rose and it was the eastern side of the valley that I capture my image. It was the beginning of April and already 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the valley. From the moment of seeing this scene, which was at the top of a ridge I knew that I had to try printing this image on metal, the results were even better than I expected. I found that the air had a haze to it requiring some slight processing to bring out the blues to provide more of a contrast between the earth and the sky.

Congratulations Nigel !

FROM THE PRESIDENTYour Club Executive and Competition Team have picked the best of about six software programs for on-line competition. Speaking with other Clubs about their competition experience has helped us to narrow the selection. We will soon start a test set up and evaluation. I will report one the group's progress next month. We did get an inventory of Club equipment and will evaluate some older projectors and laptops for possible re-introduction to active or back up status. I spoke with Kathryn Garland, Digital Arts supervisor for the City of Mississauga, at our competition results evening. She was very gracious and understanding of the direction our Club has taken, and encouraged the new executive to use the City resources to continue to enjoy photography through fellowship. Larry Jewett, President.

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS

Saturday, February 8 2014 (9 - 11:30 a.m.): Macro Photography with Larry Jewett.

This workshop is to define the terms commonly used for Macro photography and to understand what these terms mean in planning and obtaining images. We will see a variety ways to achieve different levels of magnification and then discuss the drawbacks of each.

Page 6: MCC SNAPSOT - February 2014 - Mississauga Camera Club · Mississauga, at our competition results evening. She was very gracious and understanding of the direction our Club has taken,

Also, working within the restricting demands of macro will be addressed. We will show how to achieve your desired depth of focus in the image, by choosing small apertures, positioning a tilted plane of focus, layer blending and image stacking in software. Incremental focus adjustments are achieved in two ways. The last consideration will be lighting and how to use it in a homemade macro setup box. NB: The Layers workshop with Doug Johnson, previously listed for this date, will take place on March 22.
