2 MCC NEWS Vol 22 Issue 1 • March 2020

As we say good-bye to a summer that brought devastation to many with the bushfires and floods, little did we know then what extraordinary and unprecedented circumstances we would be facing now with COVID-19.The Federal Government has ordered all Hotels, Night Clubs, Gyms, Restaurants and Licensed Clubs to close from Monday 23 March 2020 until Monday 13 April 2020 – this date may be extended if the number of confirmed COVID-19 continue to increase. In the meantime, your Board and GM are solely focused on both the financial well-being of the Club and the well-being of our members and staff. Our Club is in a good financial position and will continue to be with prudent management. There will be further tough decisions in the immediate short-term and members may be inconvenienced and we seek your understanding and positive support. Most of the decisions that affect our business from here-on will naturally be made by the state and federal government.Getting together is the fundamental of Club life but under the current restriction this is no longer be possible in the immediate future. Thank you to those members who have accepted our earlier decisions to date in closing down Squash and Bowls.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

A pre-condition of membership of the Mulgrave Country Club is to always act in a respectful and polite manner to other members and staff on all occasions, if you don’t you risk your membership. I am really disappointed to advise you that over the past fortnight some members have acted in an offensive, abusive, threatening and intimidating manner to both our GM and other staff members with phone calls and emails which your Board will not tolerate under any circumstances. These members may face disciplinary action. We know who you are as fortunately your phone numbers are recorded on a digital display on our phone system at the time. These offenders will have to show cause why their membership should not be permanently cancelled. On a positive note our Club is looking forward with a positive mindset with plans underway to develop a new short to medium term and a long-term strategic plan with external consultants from expert advisors who are experienced in our industry and consult for Clubs in NSW, QLD and ACT. Our membership is continuing with its strong growth with 450+ new members welcomed to our Club in the last quarter. Congratulation to all our sporting sections

who have made it to the finals of their respective competitions – we wish you well in the finals if they are played. You will notice 2 new cash dispensing machines in our gaming area which are there to accommodate the new “ticket-in-ticket-out” (TITO) which will allow patrons a more efficient way to collect your winnings rather than waiting for an attendant, it also will give you the option to simply insert your winning ticket in another machine of your choice to continue to play.Members are reminded that our AGM will be held on Thursday 20 June 2020 (at this stage) where your attendance would be appreciated. I look forward to seeing you around the Club. Membership renewal notices have been dispatched and it would assist the Club greatly if you could renew your membership by return in the mail or online (you cannot pay in person as we are closed!).Thank you for your patience and understanding whilst we get through this COVID-19 crisis and I look forward to seeing you around the Club when we can once again mingle safely.PETER DELANEY, President

MANAGER’S REPORT

Welcome to our first newsletter for 2020. And what a tragic year it’s turning out to be. First the bushfires

and now the COVID-19 Pandemic. It is regrettable that in light of the Government’s decision to ban all non-essential services, we will be closed until further notice. Please spare a thought for all our 120 staff that have been stood down.

As membership subscriptions are now due you can either pay online by visiting the clubs website or via email at [email protected]. If you wish to pay in person you will have to wait until we reopen.

Loyalty points that haven’t been redeemed prior to the club’s closure will now be carried over into the next financial year.

Birthday and What’s On vouchers that are valid during the closure period will NOT be honoured. We apologise if you are disappointed with this decision, but it is made in the best interests of keeping the club afloat.

As the club is closed the phones won’t be manned. If there is an urgent matter that needs to be addressed please email me at [email protected].

I will update members as information comes available. The Club is in a strong position and we are confident we will get through this.

We are truly grateful for your loyalty and understanding during these very trying times. We wish everyone well, please be patient and show care for others as we endeavour to get through this.

It’s difficult to report on shows booked given the uncertainty of the Coronavirus and how long the Government bans on social distancing will last. At this stage we still have BABBA performing on the 16th July, The Burt Bacharach Tribute on the 20th August and Queen Rocks on the 17th September. More details can be found in this newsletter.

As the 31st March approaches, so does end the Club’s financial year. Renewal is required of all membership categories. This means both unrestricted (Full red privilege card) and restricted (blue privilege card) members.

Your player activity statements will be issued via email or the kiosk from the 23rd March 2020. It is legislated by the Victorian Government that we must issue player activity statements annually.

The Club continues to support individuals, charities, sporting clubs and schools in local area. Since our last newsletter ‘your club’ has donated over $77,000 to the following recipients:

Waverley Benevolent Society, Westpac Foundation, Rowville Netball Club, Ronald McDonald House Monash, Leukaemia Foundation, Rowville Secondary College, Springvale Districts Football Netball Club, Mulgrave Football Club, Make a Wish Foundation, Wavecare, Rotary Fire Relief, Special Children’s Christmas Party, Boronia Soccer Club, St Elizabeths School, Hawks Netball Club, Waverley Park Hawks Junior Football Club, Knox United Soccer Club, Mazenod Volleyball Club, Narre Warren Football Netball Club, Sandown Cobras Football Netball Club, South Belgrave Football Netball Club, St Justin’s Netball Club, St Justin’s Parish School, Knox Relay for Life, South Upwey Netball Club, Starting Over Dog Rescue and East West Bulldogs.

Congratulations goes to Louise Bajao (Dishwasher) and Josh Glennon (Bistro) on being named Staff Members of the Month for February. Louise and Josh have been recognized for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication to the Club. Well done and keep up the good work!

ISABELLA HOSKENLate last year members of our bowls group agreed to support Isabella Hosken, a young bowler of our club, in her quest to raise funds for the Leukemia Foundation “World’s Greatest Shave”.

It was a bold step to shave her head but nothing when compared to the plight of children with leukemia who had no choice about whether to have hair or not.

The bowlers in the club got right behind this fundraiser with members organising the day. Some 60 members and guests played bowls on Sunday 12 January and enjoyed the day.

Isabella’s long, shiny black hair was systematically plaited and then cut off to be sent away and made into wigs for children with leukemia. With a raffle, cash donations and MCC support we handed Isabella a cheque for $4000 of which $1800 was raised through the exceptional generosity of bowlers during the afternoon.

6 MCC NEWS Vol 22 Issue 1 • March 2020

With Christmas seemingly a lifetime ago, the new year started with in-depth planning of the annual Mulgrave Country Club Punters’ Picnic Bus Trip. Twenty-four highly

trained contenders headed off on a mild Saturday morning in February. The weather looked a bit threatening, but nothing was about to dampen the enthusiastic group as they loaded on to their transport. Plenty of ice and drinks were on hand to keep all refreshed as the bus, ably handled by Mr “Responsible Driver” Allan Riggs, ambled through the picturesque countryside to the historical Healesville Racetrack. Michael (pictured) was well prepared with his special badge Kris had made for him, should he take a wrong turn and accidentally get cut from the herd. All arrived home safe and sound, smiling and laughing, planning the return trip next year.We can now seriously concentrate on the stars stepping out during the Autumn Carnival. With great names like Alligator Blood and Te Akau Shark, new champions are undoubtedly going to emerge and create their own history. Super expensive two year olds step out against bargain basement two year olds, but once those barriers open, breeding means less, the price tag disappears and races are won on pure ability alone, which keeps us all keen to try and own a champion, or at least win a midweek provincial race! Our Punters Club continues to perform, we have had our wins and some agonising near misses which were set to pay unprecedented amounts for us!! We have become masters of snagging the “three legged” Quaddie, something I think could prove very popular if the TAB implemented such a bet.Time to introduce our newest staff member to join the TAB Team. Many of you will already know Vinnie, Supervisor from Gaming, who trained up early in the new year and became an afternoon shift operator assisting whilst Supinder enjoyed a relaxing break catching up with family and friends. Vinnie will continue to be part of our Team. We look forward to catching up with everyone when the club reopens, in the meantime, please stay safe. From your TAB Team Robyn, Kris, Nhien, Supinder, Peter, Raghav and Vinnie

LAWN BOWLS REPORTIt is amazing that we played our last pennant games, weekend and midweek last week. Where has the season gone? Congratulations to every bowler who participated in the 2019/2020 bowling season and proudly wore the Mulgrave uniform.

Of our 8 Weekend Pennant Teams we have 2 sides in the finals. Side 1 and Side 8. Side 7 has an outside chance. Of our 9 Midweek Pennant Teams we have 3 teams in the finals. Side 1, Side 4 and Side 6. Good luck to all our bowlers who are playing in the finals. Let’s bring home some flags.

Congratulations to both Selection Panels for the 2019/2020 Season under the capable leadership of Norm Whitehead and Sue Miller. Being a selector is a 24/7 commitment and thank you selectors on behalf of all the Mulgrave Bowlers for doing such a great job.

Our Committee of Management has worked tirelessly to ensure that our 2019/2020 Bowling Season has been a great success. Our Committee manages to spend many voluntary hours organizing all aspects of running a bowling club efficiently, effectively and happily. There are vacancies for positions on both Selection Panels and the Committee of Management for the 2020/2021 Bowling Season. Bowlers please show interest and volunteer for a position. The Mulgrave Country Club Lawn Bowls Section needs you.

Our Championship Events have been running smoothly under the leadership of Peter Gawthorn. Current results

are: Norm Whitehead Men’s Singles Champion, Evelyn Martin Ladies Singles Champion, Lars Swart Men’s Novice Champion and Lars Played off in the Eastern Ranges Novice Final, Christine Battersby Ladies Novice Champion, Gordana Baric and Jan Delaney Ladies Pairs Champions, John Pilgrim and John Swale Men’s Pairs Champions, Geoff Woodley Legacy pairs Champions are Peter Gawthorn and Albie Wiegard. Congratulations to all winners so far there are still some sections to be finalized. It is fantastic that many of our bowlers enter and participate in these Championship Events

We have had many sickies during our current bowling season. Barry Fleming, Graeme Baker, Doc Dale, Alan Richards, Ray Mc Kean, Geoff Collins and John Reed. Hope I haven’t missed anyone. We wish all of our sickies a very successful speedy recovery from their various surgeries.

Sadly Ian Eckersley and Julia Bolch have passed away. We send our deepest sympathy to both families.1

As you know, our Social Bowls Program and our Midweek Bowling Program can no longer continue; however, we hope that some of the planned events will resume once the club re-opens (The Open Triples Tournament with $2,000 prize money, Monday night Triples, Wednesday Triples, Friday pairs and Saturday Winter Bowls.

In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, our A.G.M. which was to be held on April 21st 2020 will also be rescheduled at a later date.

To all of our off season holiday travellers, we hope you are safe wherever you are.

We are hoping to have a successful season of Indoor Bowls, both Socially and in Pennant, in particularly in Pennant Competition, where our teams ended the 2019 Season, Champions in Division Three, and fourth in Division One in the local South Group Competition. On the 12th; of February, the Committee held their first Meeting for 2020 Season. The main reason for this early start, was that we had to meet the Registration Deadline of the 16th March to compete in the South Group Competition. However, we are now unsure as to when our club will re-open and when our season will be able to start.Take care everyone, MORRIS LE PAGE, Indoor Bowls Chairperson

The Mulgrave Wheelers Hill Cricket Club (MWHCC) embarked on season 2019/20 with a new look committee under the watchful eye of President Chris Reid. Plenty of off-season planning saw us ensure five senior sides in the Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Association and our continued support for our junior program. Our Woolworth’s Blast program supported kids between the ages of 6-10 on a Friday night which was coordinated our ever-enthusiastic Dilan Liyanage.MWHCC had 4 out of our 5 senior sides play finals, a truly remarkable and well-deserved achievement for our efforts on and off the field. The First XI (Dorothy Shield) led by Captain/Coach Jonathan Samuels had a consistent season finishing the home and away season in 4th position and securing a finals berth. The Second XI (C Grade) led by Michael Cripps proved a strong outfit finishing 2nd after the home and away season and locking in a home final. Unfortunately, both the First and Second XI were eliminated after semi-final losses. The Third XI (H Grade) led by Craig Chalmers had a rollercoaster season narrowly missing out on finals finishing 5th.Our Twenty20 Tuesday night (Rebel Sport Shield) side were dominate through the season, finished

top of the ladder but also lost a nail-biting semi-final.The success story of the season was our inaugural Veterans (over 40) B Division team led by Brian Mortensen. The side started off slowly but quickly gained momentum to finish the season with 5 consecutive wins including with a grand final win over Bulleen Templestowe which delivered our club the first Veterans Premiership (B Division).

Thank you to the Committee for your tireless efforts and the playing group for creating such a wonderful club culture and willingness to succeed. The biggest highlight was the Sue Dean Family Day where the club raised $3000 in raising awareness for Stomach cancer. We’re already looking forward to a successful 2020/21 season.

Whites Lane Mulgrave Tennis Club – The Tennis Section of Mulgrave Country Club.

The Tennis Section has had a very busy Summer with competition and the finals about to happen after the Labour day weekend, together with a lot of repairs and maintenance & a highly successful Open Day, held just after the Australian Open.

Team Results – Summer 2019/20

Congratulations to all our teams on finishing the summer season, it was a wet, stormy, dust blown, ashen season with quite a few wash outs. Only thing missing was the plague of locusts.

We currently have six of our Junior teams and four of our Senior teams in line to make finals, which we’ll have reports and photos for in the next quarterly magazine.

Open Day 2020

Photos show what a great day we had, perfect weather (compared to the wash out the day before) and over 60 families attending. Many thanks to President Peter Delaney for his visit & support during the day. Total attendance was close to 100 with coaching on court, an all-day BBQ, speed serving competition, and a new addition with “Get your Racquet on” a new innovation from Tennis Australia that got many of the parents involved for a change.
