Dear McAuley Family,

“The blessing of unity still dwells amongst us- and oh what a blessing.”

– Catherine McAuley

Unity. As Catherine McAuley so eloquently stated, Unity is a trueblessing, and one that is certainly abundant at McAuley HighSchool. Each and every day, we witness the Unity of our studentsin numerous ways. We see it when they join arms and sing theAlma Mater together after every Mass. We see it when they pull

together as Family Homerooms to collect items for Thanksgiving meals for area residents in need. Wesee it when they attend sporting events, plays and concerts in support of their fellow students. And wesee it in the simple smiles and hugs given to each other throughout our classrooms and hallways.

We are also blessed with a tremendous Unity that exists among our faculty and staff, who give sogenerously to the young women of McAuley High School each and every day. Our teachers are unitedin carrying out Catherine McAuley’s mission and empowering our students to learn, lead and love.Simply put, the young women of McAuley High School are at the center of all they do.

This same Unity that exists within the school extends far beyond the walls of McAuley as well. We arefortunate to have the unified support of our cherished alumnae, current parents, former parents andbenefactors, from far and near, who continue to give so generously to McAuley. Gifts from theseindividuals, like yourself, allow us to advance this tremendous school to even greater heights, and helpmake a McAuley education possible for so many of our young women. McAuley would not be what itis today without this incredible level of Unity.

As we count our many blessings this holiday season, we are counting you, a valuable and integral part ofthe McAuley Community, for your continued support of our Mission. As an alumna, a current or pastparent, friend or grandparent, we thank you for being a part of our cherished community.

May God bless you and your family during this holiday season.

Fall 2016 5

In September, a group of eight McAuleyalumnae and parents travelled to Ireland, the birthplace of our foundress, CatherineMcAuley. "Our McAuley gang joined alarger tour group, and for 10 days, weexplored highlights of the Emerald Islestarting in Dublin, before traveling toCounty Cork, County Kerry, and Galway,"said Brigitte Foley, Vice President ofAdvancement at McAuley. “Incrediblyknowledgeable tour guides made historycome alive at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rock ofCashel, Ring of Kerry, and KilbegganDistillery. A trip to Ireland would not becomplete without kissing the Blarney Stone, and many group members have the photos toprove they now have the ‘gift of gab.’ Thegroup also enjoyed listening to Irish music atpubs and restaurants.”A highlight of the trip was when the McAuley groupreceived a private tour of Catherine McAuley’s houseon Baggot Street in Dublin followed by “a comfort-able cup of tea” with several Sisters of Mercy. Forthose on the trip, learning how Catherine started theSisters of Mercy was truly an inspiring story to hear.Visiting Catherine’s house was a once-in-a-lifetimeexperience that connected the group to her missionand how we continue to live it today through schoolslike McAuley.

Ellen Hodapp Dillon ’84, who travelled with hermother, Molly Hodapp, loved learning more aboutCatherine McAuley. She was inspired to participatein the trip after learning more about CatherineMcAuley at the Alumnae Day of Reflection in 2015.Ellen says she enjoyed seeing the rooms she lived in,where she prayed, and even some of her clothing andher ink set for all the writing she did.

“From the moment we saw Catherine’s house, andher statue outside, we knew this was a very specialplace,” said Mary Pat Turon-Findley, mother of 2011alumnae Mary Kate and Susan Findley, and wife ofBob Findley, MECC Board President. “Thepresentation showed how much of the world herwork has touched, and her home showed amazingtreasures, including her desk/ink wells and her burialgardens. The tea and scones were so warming andappreciative; the spirit of love surrounded us.”

For many in the group, this was their first visit to Ireland, and some weresurprised by the sheer beauty of the sights. “Nothing prepared me for the purebeauty of Ireland,” said Mary Pat Turon-Findley. “The castles were sobeautiful, and I was so surprised to see palm trees!”

“Making a trip to Ireland has always been on my bucket list, and I figured thistrip was too perfect to pass up,” said Lia Schute, ’84, who travelled with herdaughter, Emily Schute ’13. “The Cliffs of Moher were the most beautiful Ihave seen, even when it started raining!”

Everyone in the group was given ample time to explore sights on their ownand shop for Irish souvenirs, some of which included Conmara marbleearrings, Cladaugh rings and Irish knot rings, and a throw blanket from theAran Islands, just to name a few. Most agreed their favorite souvenirs were thephotos of the beautiful sights they took while on the trip.

"This was my first trip to Ireland, said SandyCase '65. "It had been on my bucket list for along time. Ireland is a beautiful country tovisit, come rain or shine."

Campus Cameo:Velma LehmannThis is Velma Lehmann’s 37th year teachinghealth and physical education at McAuley. Shealso started McAuley’s softball program andcoached McAuley’s softball team for 15 years.During her time as coach, she led the softballteam in winning the league championship ninetimes, the sectionals 10 times, and districts fivetimes. As coach, she also led the team to theState Finals in 1996. In addition to softball, shealso coached varsity volleyball for a few yearsand freshman basketball for one year.

What do you enjoy most about teaching health?I feel that the areas I teach are extremely important to the future health of our young women. Healthy lifestyles, making better decisions about many of the teenage issues they are confronted with, and separating the facts fromfiction are extremely important to me. I am blessed that I am able to share this information with them.

When you think back to your years as a softball coach, is there one memory that stands out and why?Undoubtedly, my most memorable coaching experience was winning Regionals in 1996 and making our first tripto the State tournament, and eventually to the final game. I could not have been any more proud of a group ofgirls than I was then, especially in that final game. The sense of pride and accomplishment, and the experienceand memories, we all will cherish for a lifetime.

I was very fortunate that I had the opportunity to coach at McAuley; each team was special. I pushed the girlshard on fundamentals, and it paid off. I was blessed to coach so many talented, hard-working, and special youngwomen during my coaching career. And what is truly special is seeing these young women now, and feeling thatspecial connection because we shared so much. I still feel that same pride in them.

Undoubtedly you’ve seen many changes throughout your years at McAuley. What hasn’t changed? The McAuley community has not changed; it has always been a special one. When things happen throughoutyour life – deaths, surgeries, unexpected crises - you always know the McAuley community of faculty, staff andstudents is going to be there to show their love and support.

How has McAuley changed you?Because of the students at McAuley, I have truly grown, both as a person and as a teacher. They have made me abetter person in many ways. For me, teaching gets more fun every year. With every year that goes by, Iunderstand them better, and am more in tune with their feelings and needs. I laugh with them, cry with them, teach them, and most importantly to me, let them know that I am also their friend.

When I see McAuley graduates, they always give me a big hug, and it is so nice to hear about what they aredoing today. And now, I have taught several of the daughters of my earlier students, and that is special also. With teaching, it’s been said that if you can affect one student’s life in a positive way, you are successful. I feelthat I have touched the lives of numerous students in a positive way, and that makes me so proud to be aMcAuley teacher.

Mariah Robinson ‘14 2014 alumna Mariah Robinson is having an extraordinarycollege experience with the University of Miami, Florida, where she is majoring in International Studies andminoring in Ecosystem Science and Policy andCommunication Studies. She was awarded a Fulbrightscholarship to attend a Fulbright Summer Institute, whichis the only Fulbright scholarship available to undergrads.

The Fulbright Commission selects participants through arigorous application and interview process. In making theseawards, the Commission looks not only for academicexcellence, but a focused application, a range ofextracurricular and community activities, demonstratedambassadorial skills, a desire to further the FulbrightProgramme and a plan to give back to the recipient’s homecountry upon returning.

As part of her Fulbright scholarship, Mariah spent threeweeks in London this past summer at the University ofLondon SOAS, where she took a course called NGOs(Non-Governmental Organizations) and SocialMovements: The Politics of Protest and Change. “I learnedabout what makes NGOs effective or ineffective and howwe can tell the difference, how social movements catch onand actually affect change, and how we know if the changewe are trying to promote is actually harmful orunsustainable,” said Mariah.

As part of the Fulbright program, Mariah also experiencedmany amazing sites around the UK, including Oxford andStonehenge, which was her favorite. “I did so muchsightseeing in the few weeks that I was in London,” saidMariah. “I took a boat ride on the Thames, saw Big Benand Buckingham Palace, rode on the London Eye, and satin on a session of Parliament.”

Mariah is currentlystudying at SciencesPo in Reims, France, and is enjoying thesemester, despite thefact that she came toFrance withoutknowing any of theFrench language. “Iwanted to challengemyself to live in aplace where I wasn’tthe majority in termsof language,” she said.“It has definitely beentricky and sometimesscary. Things likegetting from the airport to my new city by train and bus, oreven just going to the grocery or trying to mail somethingat the post office, can be confusing or embarrassing when Ican’t understand what people are telling or asking me. But,it has been such a great learning and maturing experience, and I’ve picked up on a lot of French and can get aroundand communicate now. I have really enjoyed taking politicalscience and international affairs courses from a non-USperspective.”

Next semester, Mariah will study at the University ofSydney in Australia, where she hopes to take courses inEnvironmental Science as well as another language course. She also hopes to do an internship for a communitydevelopment or conservation organization. “I am mostexcited to focus onenvironmental studies, especially in a place as beautifuland diverse as Australia. I amalso very excited to be in a placeonce again where I can hike andscuba dive and spend time inthe ocean,” said Mariah.

After college, Mariah hopes towork in internationaldevelopment. “I have beeninterested in social justice andenvironmental issues since I wasyoung,” she said. “My goal is towork internationally for NGOs,helping communities alleviatepoverty, inequalities andenvironmental destruction whilebecoming self-sustaining.”
