“PERCENT OF” The Facts:

The word “percent” means “for each 100”.

The word “of” means to multiply.

To convert a percent to a decimal (D2P), you need to move the decimal to the left 2 places. [Why?, because you are technically dividing by 100. Remember, a per-cent is out of 100!]

Example #1: What is 35% of 200?

Answer: (.35)(200)=70

ESTIMATING SQUARE ROOTS To “square” a number means to multiply the number by itself.

To find the “square root” of a number is to find the value that when multiplied by itself gives you the original number.

Example #1What 2 integers does fall between?

Answer: First, find the closest perfect squares that surround 50. They are and . Therefore, falls in between 7 and 8.

Example #2Round to the nearest tenth.

Answer: The closest perfect squares to 12 are 9 and 16. Therefore, is greater than 3 and less than 4. Next, try multiplying numbers until you get the closest to 12. (For example, 3.1x3.1, 3.2x3.2, 3.3x3.3, etc…)3.5x3.5=12.25 So,

POWERS (OR EXPONENTS)The exponent of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication.

When dividing like terms with exponents, you SUBTRACT the exponents.

When multiplying like terms with exponents, you ADD the exponents.

Example #1What is the value of the expression below?

RATES, RATIOS, AND PROPORTIONS

A rate is a ratio that compares two different kinds of numbers, such as miles per hour or dollars per pound.

The rate "miles per hour" gives distance traveled per unit of time. Problems using this type of rate can be solved using a proportion, or a formula.
