for its work in support-ing both Catholic edu-cation in inner-Los An-geles and its support efforts on behalf of the Carmelite priests and brothers. Rob shared stories of the time he spent with Kermit Alexander ‘59 when they were roommates at UCLA. The two were acquainted prior to their arrival on the UCLA campus as rivals in the

old Catholic League. Rob bemoaned the fact that as a tailback in Loyola High’s single-wing formation, he got few chances to pass the football. The last time he and Kermit met as rivals on a prep foot-ball field was during their high school senior year. He wistfully re-called how he com-pleted the first three passes he threw; the

bad news was that all three pass receptions were made by Kermit! In addition to the funds raised through the tournament, other monies were raised during the eve-ning’s banquet by the pur-chase of raffle tickets and a silent auction. The Fifth Annual Crusader Golf Tournament raised $38,362, net of costs. Next year’s tourna-ment will return to Western Hills Country Club on May 19, 2008, so mark your cal-endars. The continued sup-port of MCAF by its alumni and friends is cru-cial to the ability of the or-ganization to meet and ser-vice its charitable tasks. Plan now to “tee it up” on May 19, 2008, at Western Hills — and be sure to be there for the tournament banquet.

If you don’t play or can’t attend the event, there are many ways you can support the MCAF effort: you could be a tee sponsor, sponsor a student golfer, or make a donation to defer the expenses of the tourna-ment. Your contribution is tax–deductible and greatly appreciated.

Dear Tom P., I am a ‘47 graduate of MCHS and a former editor of the school paper. I have received my editions of “The Crusader" which are greatly appreciated and incidentally you did an excellent job in preparing, editing, and disseminating to all of our graduates. I understand that you have retired from the position. I have been requested to act as a committee chairman to plan a 60th class reunion, if there is sufficient interest from our ‘47 classmates to have a reunion, recogniz-ing the fact that in our age bracket many have afflic-tions that would prevent attendance and a signifi-cant number have passed

I know Jack and he has been hanging out in the jungles of Central America since the 1960s and I’m sure has grandchil-dren there now and I’d love to hear from him. My e-mail is [email protected]. PATRICK E. BROWNE, '45 My brother-in-law passed away on April 7, 2007, after a brief illness. Pat gradu-ated from Mt. Carmel, where he lettered in bas-ketball. In the summer of 1945, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and went through basic train-ing. World War II ended

in the fall of that year, and Pat was then honora-bly discharged from ac-tive duty. He lived in Torrance for nearly 53 years, and worked for Northrop for 35 years. Pat was married to Mary K. Hayes, a graduate of Bishop Conaty in Los Angeles, for 57 years; they had four children and eight

grand-children. He was very devoted to his family, and interested in many sports, especially at the Hollywood Turf club. Pat always dis-played the attributes of a Crusader: hard work, family, and a sense of humor. He will be missed. — Jack Hayes '55

He moved to northern San Diego County to retire. However, retirement did not agree with him so he de-cided to continue building for another 36 years. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. John’s, the Rotary Club of Hawthorne, and school boards at Mount Carmel High School and St. Mary’s Academy in Los Angeles; sup-ported the Boys Club of Vista, was a founding member of Vista Pop Warner, and one of the original builders of the

Moonlight Amphitheatre in 1976. He gave generously to the Smile Train and Parkinson’s Re-search, and helped build an or-phanage in Mexico in honor of his son Ernest, who was killed in 1969 while serving in Vietnam. Carl also recently donated a piece of property in Vista to the city for use as a memorial to his son and other Vietnam casual-ties. He is survived by his wife Peggy Ann, eleven children and step-children, and 30 grand-children.

CARL PINAMONTI, ‘46 Philanthropist and Builder/Developer Carl Pina-monti, 78, died at home on April 13, 2007. Born Oct. 18, 1928, in Inglewood, he at-tended St. John’s School in Inglewood and, of course, Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, graduating with the class of 1946. He was a partner in Pa-cific Plastering & Atlantic Lathing and later founded Pina-monti Construction Co. He lived in Vista, CA, since 1970.

THOMAS WILBUR WARD ‘46 Born November 25, 1928, at Torrance Memorial Hospital to Roland and Josephine L. Ward, Tom grew up in El Segundo and Hawthorne, graduating from Mount Carmel High School in 1946. He married in 1951 and worked for the Beverly Hills Fire Department where he retired in 1988 after 35 years of service. He lived in Torrance for the past 50 years and was a devoted mem-ber of St. James Catholic Church.

On April 19, 2007, after a brief illness, Tom left this earth peacefully to join our Lord. He was surrounded by his loving wife and all of his children, some of their spouses, and two grandchildren at Little Company of Mary Hospital. Tom leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Dorene, his children Tom (Jill), Karen Hen-derson (Steve), Barbara Vata-laro (Ralph), Stacie Voss (Jim), Robert (Shannon), Kristina

    The Spirit of Mount Carmel

What is it about Mount Carmel High School that inspires its graduates and friends to sup-port a school that has been gone for over thirty years? Is it remem-brances of the campus at 7011 South Hoover when life was less complex, or at least seemed so from today’s perspective? Is it the continued strength and com-fort that Our Lady of Mount Car-mel might offer? Surely it could be our memories of the Carmelite priests and brothers that provided a quality secondary education to so many of us as young men. Is it the storied traditions of Crusader athletics with the likes of Jerry Hennessy, the McKeever twins, and Kermit Alexander? The an-swer is all of the above … and more. In short, the lasting genius is something that can only be de-scribed as the Spirit of Mount Carmel – a combination of faith, a strong educational background, and a history of service to God, country and community; that spirit nurtured by the all-encompassing experience, which has endured within each of us as we entered the greater world be-yond Mount Carmel High School and became proud members of its Alumni Community. Bolstered by the past gen-erosity and devotion of the Mount Carmel family and the support from other caring benefactors, on July 1, 2007, the Board of Direc-tors of the Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation introduced the Spirit

of Mount Carmel Endow-ment. Its purpose is to per-petuate the educational com-mitment and strong moral compass that Mount Carmel High School, the Carmelite priests and brothers, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel provided the Los Angeles community from 1934 through 1976. The Spirit of Mount Carmel is more than another legacy component of a Catholic high school education and experience. It has become a sustainable way of life; and, we invite your support of the Spirit of Mount Carmel Endowment, which will help continue the best and most hallowed tra-ditions of our shared pasts. The primary goal is to enhance the support for those Carmelite clergymen who gave of themselves for the betterment of the col-lege-prep, Catholic secon-dary education experience that served the surrounding MCHS community; to pro-vide financial assistance to Los Angeles inner-city paro-chial schools that are woe-fully under funded; and, to expand and enrich the Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation’s support of the inner-city Catholic grammar schools’ participation in the Los Angeles Archdiocese-sponsored Academic Junior High Decathlon (AJHD). The spirit of our Alma Ma-ter now calls on you to sup-port the Spirit of Mount Carmel Endowment because

every gift is appreciated and, above all, it matters. The Mount Carmel Alumni Foundation is currently looking at other areas of need and opportunity where (and how) the Mount Carmel family can help. Areas of need we are considering include efforts that are about us; from delivering assistance to our more elderly and infirm brother Crusaders to identifying those among us who could provide an-cillary services, which would be utilized when a need is identified. Your financial support of the Mount Carmel Alumni Foun-dation is tax deductible and sup-ports needy causes close to home. Please don’t make charitable giv-ing too cerebral a process; stop thinking about it and take a mo-ment to just feel what the Spirit of Mount Carmel means to you. I am a legacy student from Servite High School in Anaheim, class of 1987. John Martin, Jr. was one of my best friends and had a really cute sister. The rest, as they say, is history. George Carillo, class of ’46, as seen at the 2007 Golf Tourney, was named as the Official Tour-nament Photographer by former MCAF Chairman Al Alessandra, and served in that capacity for Fr. Rich-ard Nagel and Padre Golf since the tournament was instituted in 1987. I am pleased to inter-view George for the Crusader. For those of you who don’t know this loyal Crusader, here is your opportunity to meet him: Marilee Alessandra: George, how did you get in-volved in the Mt. Carmel Golf Tournament? George Carillo: Oh, gosh, I have been involved so much longer than that. I first got the idea, no, I must say it was God’s idea, to start Mt. Car-mel Dances to raise money for the Padres. You know, the Carmelites who taught us had no way to make money in California at that time, no schools to teach in. The par-ishes supported their grammar schools, and the Carmelites in New York and Chicago had their own. Some of our Pa-dres lived at St. Raphael’s at the time. We just needed to do something, so some Mt. Carmel people started the dances to help. There were always so many guys who didn’t want to lose their con-nection with each other. And, from the very beginning, I must say, the wives, who may not have known anything about Carmel, got really in-volved and helped it work.

MA: George, I didn’t real-ize you had been so involved from the beginning of fund-raising for the Carmelite Fathers in California! What inspired you? Please tell me about your years as a student at Mt. Carmel. GC: Well, I was a cheer-leader in the first few years of the cheerleader program (a few years later the fathers thought we should have girl cheerleaders, so I was at Girl’s High, known as Bishop Conaty today, and St. Mary’s all the time – most Carmel guys were run off in those days! I played bas-ketball, was a sprinter, but mostly I just hung out with the guys in the neighbor-hood. We all lived so close to the school. Mt. Carmel was cliquish among our-selves then, I guess because we all lived around the cor-ner from each other, went to the same churches, worked at the same after-school jobs. . . After all, the tuition had just gone up from $5 to $10, a fortune! We hung out to-gether, we hung out with girls from St. Mary’s and Girl’s High, I guess that’s why we all were like broth-

    ers

and sisters. That’s just the way it was. MA: George, I was asked to interview you about your fam-ily, career, etc., but, I think many of the committed Crusad-ers would have such an interest in your Mt. Carmel years that I would like to close with some-thing you told me about your most influential memory of Carmel. Is that OK? GC: Marilee, oh yeah. The Fathers, they were tough. You didn’t get away with anything with most of them. Fr. A. Daly was one in my day. I don’t know how those guys who were only a few years older than us could handle us young punks who thought we were King Kong. They took kids who had the opportunity to become gangsters or thieves and turned us into men. God bless ’em, how’d they do that? Has the need for Catholic education changed? — Marilee Alessandra, Board Member At Large
