Five day Quality Improvement Programme (FDP)
Date: 24th July to 28th July, 2017 Resource Person – MBS SPA in
association with COA

Improve”- In harmony with this excellent
thought, MBS School of Planning and
Architecture joined hands with Council
of Architecture in organizing a 5 day
Quality Improvement Programme (QIP)
from 24th July, 2017 to 28th July, 2017
for the faculties of Schools of Architecture. The theme of this event was rightfully
established to be "RECENT ADVANCES IN BUILDING MATERIALS, CONSTRUCTION
TECHNOLOGIES AND ARCHITECTURAL STYLES".
The QIP aimed at enhancing the
academic and teaching environment in
the Schools of Architecture by providing
faculty members an opportunity through
which they can update their professional
and pedagogical skills and impart it
further to the budding Architects.
The major objectives of the QIP were to equip the Faculty Members with the recent
trends in architecture, better field exposure and to provide a platform for exchange of
knowledge and ideas. To achieve these objectives, experienced resource persons were
engaged to share their practical experience under the broad sub themes of Trends and

Transformation of BUILDING MATERIALS, Modern Transition of CONSTRUCTION
TECHNOLOGIES and Theory and practice of ARCHITECTURAL STYLES. The subthemes
covered a wide range of topics with main focus on ecologically sustainable architectural
and construction techniques.
The QIP was attended by 36
participants from various Schools of
Architecture in India namely Apeejay
School of Architecture and Planning,
Greater Noida; Ganga Institute of
Architecture & Town Planning, Jhajjar,
Haryana; G L Bajaj Group of Institutions,
Mathura; L. S. Raheja School of
Architecture, Mumbai; Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture, Mumbai;
Jagannath University, Bhadurgarh and the host institute MBS SPA, Delhi.
The inaugural session in the first half of the Day ONE witnessed the presence of the
esteemed dignitaries Hon’ble Chairman, MBS SPA, Sh Gulshan Kumar; Director MBS
SPA Prof. V.K. Bugga; Director (Admin) MBS SPA, Sh. Vinay Jairath; esteemed guest
Prof. Neerja Lugani Sethi, Dean, USAP, GGSIPU, Delhi; and the Hon’ble Chief Guest Shri
Vijay Garg, Vice President, COA, Delhi.

The program started with the opening remarks by Director MBS SPA Prof. V.K. Bugga
and encouraging words by Prof. Neerja Lugani Sethi, Dean, USAP, GGSIPU, Delhi.
The inaugural session was
presided by the Hon’ble Chief
Guest Shri Vijay Garg, Vice
President, COA, Delhi, wherein
he briefed the participants about
the various activities and ongoing
expansion plans of COA-TRC for
the training of faculty members
of Architecture Schools.
In the second half of the Day ONE of
the event, the participants had the
privilege of learning about the use of
alternative materials-Mud and
bamboo along with modern material-
Steel in design projects by renowned
Ar. Revathi Kamath, a pioneer in the
field of Mud Architecture. She talked
about her design thoughts and design
philosophy; Ecoliterate Architecture -
"to do more with less ". The
underlying message of all her design
and work philosophies brought up an
innovative thought which she
explained as "the space which has been designed for a certain function presently should
also have an existence and purpose once this function is no longer in use."

The first half of the day TWO was
brightened by an interactive session with Ar.
Deependra Prashad, a green building expert
and INTBAU India Coordinator, wherein the
participants learnt to weigh the various
sustainability parameters in choosing
building materials.
The Second half of the day TWO was graced
by the presence of Ar. Surinder Mohan Soni
along with an internationally famed
architect, Ar. Ezzat Hossaini. They spoke to
the participants about construction
technologies, their evolution and
advancement along with a case study of a
project they collaborated to work on, the
Bahai House of worship.

On the Day Three of the Programme, an
insight into the cause of an earthquake and
various mitigation construction techniques
was given by Er. Rajeev Pipraiya which made
the participants understand the earthquake
resistant buildings in a better manner.
The second half of Day THREE had a site visit
organized to the TERI RETREAT at Gurugram,
Haryana. Here the participants had the
opportunity to watch two short
documentaries about the projects, principles,
innovation and the outreach of TERI, as well
as practically see and observe the various
innovative resource efficient construction technologies being used at the centre.
In the first half of Day Four, Ar. Ankit Bhalla,
Project Officer, GRIHA Council, Delhi and an
expert in energy efficiency and sustainability
gave extensive and useful information about
GRIHA and its rating criteria especially related
to building materials. Ar. Bhalla was
accompanied by Ms. Payal Rastogi who spoke
about the environment protection declaration
and the certification of building materials as
"green" or "sustainable construction
materials".

The Second half of Day Four was brightened by Ar. Gaurav Shorey, a highly influential
TED TALK speaker, a master trainer of ECBC and a green building expert. The session
which was interactive, motivating, inspirational and informative revolved around his
SWARAJ programme which intended to revive faith in one’s own culture, identity,
tradition and at large their own country. The fun filled and captivating session with
series of interesting tasks made all the participants see “sustainability” from a different
dimension which is very much imbibed in our Indian tradition and culture and which our
generation is forgetting over the course of time.
On the final day of the QIP, the first half had a thought
provoking session with Prof.(Dr.) Jyoti Pande Sharma,
Chairperson, Department of Architecture, DCRUST, Sonepat,
Haryana, having an expertise in the field of build heritage
and cultural landscape. She talked about the relevance of
Architectural styles and History of architecture in the
present day context and emphasized that it is not merely
frozen in their respective time frames.
The second half of Day Five was graced by Ar. Tushar Gaur,
an expert of theoretical research in architecture, who spoke
on the topic "Architecture Communicates. How?". He stated
that the mannerism that architecture adopts to communicate is metaphorical.

Later at the end of the day, the QIP
was concluded by the event
coordinators Ar. Gunjan Jain,
Associate Professor, MBS SPA and
Ar. Amrita Kaur Gulati, Associate
Professor, MBS SPA by briefing
about the learning from the
sessions conducted during the
course of five days and extending
a vote of thanks to the Council Of
Architecture for giving an opportunity to host the QIP in collaboration with them ,
Management, MBS SPA for their constant financial and resource support, Director MBS
SPA for able guidance at every step of organizing the event. They also thanked the
administration team and all the faculties of MBS SPA who made the QIP possible
through their untiring efforts, the participants for their active participation and the
eminent speakers for their valuable contribution in making the QIP a huge success.
The programme ended with a valedictory session, wherein all the participants shared
their learning experience, their journey of five days at MBS SPA and gave their valuable
feedback about the QIP.

The five day Quality Improvement Programme not only proved to be a huge success but
also provided a platform for like minded faculties of Architecture to connect, share and
relate.
