1. OVERVIEW OF FRENCH POLYNESIA AND MOOREA:

1.1. Geography

French Polynesia is composed of 118 geographically dispersed islands and atolls among which

76 are inhabited. The territory stretches over more than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 mi) in the South

Pacific Ocean. To picture better the size of the area the islands of French Polynesia cover the

same area as Europe which is 2 500 000 square kilometers.

French Polynesia is divided into five groups of islands: the Society Islands archipelago, composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands; the Tuamotu archipelago; the Gambier Islands; the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands.

Mo'orea or Moorea, is a high island on the Windward islands and part of the Society Islands, 17

kilometers (11 mi) northwest of Tahiti. The name comes from the Tahitian Mo'ore'a, meaning

"yellow lizard"; Mo'o = lizard; Re'a (from re'are'a) = yellow.

The island was formed as a volcano 1.5 to 2.5 million years ago, the result of a Society hotspot in the mantle under the oceanic plate that formed the whole of the Society Archipelago.

Moorea is about 10 miles in width from the west to the east. There are two small, nearly symmetrical bays on the north shore. The one to the west is called Ōpūnohu and the one to the east is Cook's Bay, also called Pao Pao Bay. The other communes are Piha'ena to the west and busy Maharepa to the east where The Manava Beach Resort & Spa-Moorea is located. The highest point is Mount Tohi’e’a near the center of Moorea. It dominates the vista from the two bays. There are also hiking trails in the mountains. The Vai'are Bay is another small inlet, smaller than the two main bays, on the east shore and this is where the ferries are to Tahiti are docking.

1.2. Moorea, an Environmental & Scientific Research hotspot:

The University of California, Berkeley maintains the Richard B. Gump South Pacific Research Station on the west coast of Cook's Bay. The Gump station is also home to the Moorea Coral Reef Long Term Ecological Research Site (LTER). This program was established to support research on long-term ecological phenomena affecting the whitening of the coral reef.

The French EPHE (Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes) and the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) maintain a research station at the end of 'Ōpūnohu Bay since 1970. This Centre for island research and environment observatory or CRIOBE is a research site for several international projects, including the monitoring of coral reefs as well as the monitoring of the fish population on the reef.

1.3. Flora:

The vegetation of French Polynesia falls within the Pleotropic floral kingdom. The flora of these islands is relatively poor in terms of diversity of species, due to their geographical isolation, however, most of the islands are covered by tropical forest. That is because the soil of volcanic origin is very fertile, and the climate is warm and humid. Moorea is home to a unique tree called the Phyllanthus nadeaudii from the family Phyllanthaceae. It is endemic to the island of Moorea, where it is found on several mountains above 420 meters elevation.

1.4. EarthCheck affiliation:

EarthCheck is an environmental, social and societal certification dedicated to the Tourist Industry. Its objective is to provide a framework to organizations wishing to engage in a sustainable development process. Sustainable development comes through 3 pillars:

Page 6: MBRM - Directory - COVID - ANGL · 2020. 9. 26. · Manava Beach Resort & Spa Page 5 1. OVERVIEW OF FRENCH POLYNESIA AND MOOREA: 1.1. Geography French Polynesia is composed of 118

Manava Beach Resort & Spa Page 6

• Economic - the objective being to perpetuate the economic activities of French Polynesia and the profitability of the Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea.

• Social - the goal being the enhancement of Polynesian culture and an improvement of the guests’ and employees’ well-being.

• Ecological - aiming at the preservation of the environment and of natural resources (water, air, soil, etc…). Natural heritage is protected and the fight against global warning, through a reduction of greenhouse gas emission, is also considered.

More than 1,300 organizations spread over more than 70 countries are now certified “EarthCheck”. Many of them are hotels. However, travel agencies and holiday resorts can also apply for certification. These organizations are evaluated according to the 17 sustainable development objectives defined by the United Nations in 2017. 1/ Poverty eradication; 2/ Fight against hunger; 3/ Access to health; 4/ Access to quality education; 5/ Gender equality; 6/ Access to safe water and sanitation; 7/ Use of renewable energies; 8/ Access to decent jobs; 9/ To build resilient infrastructures, promote sustainable industrialization, and encourage innovation; 10/ Reduction of inequalities; 11/ Sustainable cities and communities; 12/ Responsible production consumption; 13/ Fight against climate change; 14/ Aquatic life; 15/ Life on land; 16/ Justice and peace; 17/ Partnerships for achieving objectives; Evaluation covers both quantitative and qualitative aspects of the organization being assessed. There are four levels of certification: Silver, Gold, Platinum and Master. Level granted depends on the number of certified years. The environmental, social and societal performances of the Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea are reviewed and every year.
