THE CANTERVILLE GHOST3

(II)BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY

This is a ghost story in which the ghost, far frombeing horrifying, is a highly amusing figure. Throughthe story of the ghost, the writer tries to drive homea moral lesson; and that is –– ‘Love is stronger thanLife and Death.’

1. When an American Minister, Mr Otis, bought the Canterville Chase, everyone said it wasvery foolish of him, as the place was haunted. But Mr Otis answered, “I come from a moderncountry, where we have everything that moneycan buy. And if there were such a thing as aghost in Europe, we would have it in one of ourmuseums in America.”

A few weeks later, on a lovely July evening, MrOtis, his wife and their children (Washington, Vir-ginia, and the two boys who were twins) wentdown to their new house. When they entered thehouse, the sky suddenly became dark and the airbecame still.

Mrs Umney, the housekeeper, led them intothe library of the castle. They all sat down thereand began to look around. Suddenly, Mrs Otissaw a red stain on the floor just by the fireplaceand said to Mrs Umney, “I am afraid somethinghas been spilt there.”

“Yes, madam,” said the old housekeeper in alow voice, “blood has been spilt on the spot.”

“How terrible,” said Mrs Otis; “I don’t wantany bloodstain in my sitting room. It must beremoved at once.”

The old woman smiled and answered, “It isthe blood of Lady Eleanore de Canterville. Shewas murdered on that spot by her husband,Sir Simon de Canterville, in 1575. Sir Simondisappeared nine years later. His body has neverbeen found, but his ghost still haunts the house. This bloodstain has become a tourist attractionand cannot be removed.”

“That is all nonsense,” said Washington, theeldest son of the Otis family, “a stain-remover willclean it up in no time.” He took out of his pocketa bottle of stain-remover and cleaned the spot. But as soon as the bloodstain had disappeared, aterrible flash of lightning lit up the room. Afearful peal of thunder made the whole buildingshake.

2. There was a horrible storm that night. Apartfrom that nothing scary happened. The nextmorning, the family came down to breakfast. Theyfound on the floor the terrible stain of blood onceagain. Washington cleaned it a second time, butit appeared again the next morning. The thirdmorning it was there again, although the libraryhad been locked up at night by Mr Otis himself.

The following night, all doubts about theexistence of the ghost were finally removed. Ateleven o’clock, the family went to bed. Some timeafter, Mr Otis was awakened by a strange noise inthe corridor, outside his room. It sounded like theclank of metal, and it came nearer every moment.Mr Otis got up and looked at the clock. It wasexactly one o’clock. Mr Otis put on his slippers, and opened the door. There, right in front ofhim, stood the ghost, with eyes as red as burningcoals. Long grey hair fell over his shoulders andfrom his wrists and ankles hung heavy chains.

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST5

“My dear Sir,” said Mr Otis, “you must oil thosechains. It’s impossible to sleep with such a noisegoing on outside the bedroom. I have with me abottle of lubricator, and I will get you more if yourequire.” With these words, Mr Otis laid the bottledown, closed the door, and went back to bed.

The ghost stood shocked for a moment, butthen growled angrily. Just at this moment, thetwins appeared in the corridor and threw a largepillow at him. The ghost hastily escaped throughthe wall, and the house became quiet again.

3. The ghost did not appear for the rest of theweek. The only strange thing that happened wasthe bloodstains, which they found on the libraryfloor every morning. It was also quite strange thatthe colour of the stain changed from time to time. Some mornings it was red, then brown or purple,or even green. These changes amused the familyvery much. Bets on the colour were made everyevening. The only person who did not like to jokeabout it was Virginia. She was rather annoyed atthe sight of the bloodstain, and nearly cried themorning it was green.

The second appearance of the ghost was onSunday night. Shortly after the family had goneto bed, they heard a fearful crash in the hall. Asuit of armour had fallen on the floor and in achair sat the Canterville ghost. He rubbed hisknees which seemed to have been hurt. The twinsstarted shooting peas at him with their toy-shoot-ers. The ghost stood up with an angry growl andpassed through them like a mist. He also blew outthe candle, leaving them all in total darkness.Reaching the top of the stairs, the ghost turnedaround and, in order to frighten the Otis boys, laughed his most horrible laugh. Just then, a dooropened and Mrs Otis came out of her bedroom.“I am afraid you are not well,” she said, “I havetherefore brought for you this bottle of medicine.”The ghost looked at her furiously, and thendisappeared.

When the ghost reached his room, he wascompletely exhausted. He had found the Ameri-can family extremely annoying. But what annoyedhim most was, that he had not been able to wearthe armour. Its weight had made him fall and hadhurt his knees.

Now for days, he would leave his room only torenew the bloodstains. However, on Friday, the17th of August, he tried to frighten the Otisfamily again. At half-past ten, the family went tobed. For some time, the ghost heard the twinslaugh, but at a quarter past eleven all was still. Atmidnight, he left his secret chamber and glidedthrough the corridor. Suddenly, he saw a horribleghost standing right in front of him. TheCanterville ghost had never seen another ghostbefore, so he was terribly frightened. He quicklyhurried back to his room. But then he thoughtthat he should go back and speak to the otherghost. Two ghosts were better than one, hethought, and his new friend might help him tofrighten the twins. But when he came back to thespot, he found that the other ghost was only awhite sheet which the twins had hung there toplay a trick on him. Very upset, the Cantervilleghost went back to his chamber.

4. For five days, the ghost did not leave hisroom. He was very weak and tired. His nerveswere completely shattered. He no longer caredabout the bloodstains on the library floor. If theOtis family did not want it, he had no need torenew it. Whenever he roamed the house now, hewould always oil his chains and make no sound atall. However, the twins still played tricks on him. They would stretch strings across the corridor, overwhich he tripped in the dark. The ghost nowdecided to teach the twins a lesson.

All day long, he had been planning to have hisrevenge. At a quarter past one at night, he finallyglided out of his room and crept down thecorridor. When he reached the twins’ bedroom,

THE CANTERVILLE GHOST7

he found the door slightly open. In order tofrighten the boys, he flung the door open with abang. Just then a jug full of water fell on him, wetting him to the skin. The twins burst intoshrieks of laughter and the ghost fled.

The ghost now gave up all hope of ever beingable to frighten the rude American family. Hewas particularly afraid of the twins. From now on,he would creep around the house as quietly aspossible. One night, on the 19th of September, hewent downstairs to see if there were any traces leftof the bloodstain. It was about a quarter past twoin the morning, and he thought everyone was fastasleep. But suddenly from a dark corner, two fig-ures came running, waving their arms wildly abovetheir heads. Coming close to him, they shouted“Boo !” in his ear. Full of panic, the ghost hurriedback to his room. After this shock, he was neveragain seen at night.

5. One day, Virginia was walking along thecorridor. She thought she had seen somebody inone of the rooms and went in. To her surprise, itwas the Canterville ghost himself; and he lookedreally sad.

“I am so sorry for you,” she said, “but mybrothers are going back to Eton tomorrow, andthen, if you behave yourself, no one will annoyyou.”

“It is absurd asking me to behave myself,” theghost answered, “I must rattle my chains, and groanthrough keyholes, and walk about at night. I existfor this very reason.”

“It is no reason at all for existing, and you knowyou have been very nasty. Mrs Umney told us thatyou had killed your wife.”

“Well, I quite admit it,” said the ghost, “butmy wife was not very nice; she knew nothing aboutcookery. However, it is all over now, and I don’tthink it was very nice of her brothers to starve meto death.”

“Starved you to death ? Oh, Mr Ghost, I meanSir Simon, are you hungry ? I have a sandwich inmy case. Would you like it ?”

“No, thank you, I never eat anything now; butit is very kind of you. You are much nicer thanthe rest of your rude, dishonest family.”

“Stop !” cried Virginia, stamping her foot, “itis you who are rude, and as for dishonesty, youstole the paints out of my box to renew thatridiculous bloodstain in the library.”

Having said this, Virginia turned around toleave the room.

“Please don’t go, Miss Virginia,” the ghost cried;“I am so unhappy and I really don’t know what todo. I want to go to sleep and I cannot. I have notslept for three hundred years, and I am so tired.”

“Poor, poor Ghost,” she murmured; “have youno place where you can sleep ?”

“Well, I know a place where I could sleep ––it’s the Garden of Death, the churchyard. Butonly if you weep for my soul, the Angel of Deathwill have mercy on me.”

When Virginia promised to help the ghost andpray for him, he rose from his seat, took her handand kissed it thankfully. Then he led her acrossthe room. Virginia saw the wall slowly fading awaylike a mist. “Quick, quick,” cried the ghost, “or itwill be too late.” Then the wall closed behindthem, and the room was empty.

6. About ten minutes later, the bell rang fordinner. As Virginia did not come down, Mrs Otissent up one of the servants. After a little time, theservant came back and said he could not findMiss Virginia anywhere. So, the whole familystarted looking for her.

Many hours passed, but they could find notrace of Virginia. After dinner, Mr Otis orderedthem all to go to bed, saying that nothing morecould be done that night. He said he would
