She had a passionfor writing and managed to keep up her diary throughoutthe time her family had to live in hidingfor two years. Her last entry was written just before the hiding place was discovered and the family wassent off to concentration camps. After the war, her diary was published and became an immediatesuccess. A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE DIARY

When Anne Frank sat down with her diary, she could never have imagined the impact her wordswould have on generations of readers. By the end of the 1980s, sixteen million copies of her diary hadbeen sold worldwide, and it remains the most often read account of the persecution of Nazis over theJews. Under her diary entry for 15 July 1944, Anne writes, “I feel the suffering of millions.” She hadno idea that her story would become the testament of those millions.

Anne had no close friends with whom she could be completely open, so she invented one in theform of her diary whom she called ‘Kitty’ and to whom her diary entries are addressed. AlthoughFrank’s diary contains nothing of her experience of the concentration camp where she and her sisterdied, it does provide an idea of the Jewish suffering during the Holocaust (the killing of millions ofJews by the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s).

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL 3FOR FIRST & SECOND TERM–X

After the hiding place of the Franks was invaded, the pages of Anne’s diary were left scattered onthe floor. Miep Gies, one of the people who had assisted the Franks for over two years, discovered thepages and kept them safe. When Mr Frank returned as the only survivor, Miep gave him the diary.Having just learned that Anne had died, Mr Frank found reading the diary very painful. At the urgingof his friends, he decided to publish the diary after deleting certain passages he considered unsuitablefor widespread release. The Dutch version was published in 1947, and the English translation wasfirst published in 1952. After Mr Frank’s death in 1980, a complete version, including the previouslyomitted content, was released.

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL4 FOR FIRST & SECOND TERM–X

An outer view of the warehouse where the

Franks spent their days of hiding.

A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE DIARY

On her thirteenth birthday, Anne Frank’s parents give her a diary. She feels excited because shefeels the need of someone, in whom she can confide all of her secret thoughts and feelings. Eventhough she has rich social relations, she feels misunderstood by everyone she knows. Anne startspenning down in her diary the daily events around her, her thoughts, her school grades, her girlfriendsand boyfriends, and all that. But, within a month, her entire life changes.

As Jews in the Germany-occupied Holland, the Franks fear for their lives. Anne’s sister, Margot, iscalled to appear before the authorities. It becomes almost certain that she will be sent to a concentrationcamp. So Anne and her family go into hiding. They move into a little section of the building whereMr Frank has his office that is walled off and hidden behind a swinging bookcase.

For two years, the Frank family lives in this SecretAnnex. Mr and Mrs Van Daan and their son Peter arealso in hiding with the Franks. Later, Mr Dussel, anelderly dentist moves in, and Anne has to share herbedroom with him. The hideaways have to remain coopedup in tiny rooms, tiptoeing around during the day andbecoming shell-shocked from the sounds of bombs andgunfire at night.

Luckily, the Franks have tons of reading material anda radio. Through her studies and family discussions,Anne grows in her knowledge of politics and literature. She puts all her energy into studying and writing.

We see a real change in Anne when she begins hangingout in the attic with Peter Van Daan. Around this time, she starts having dreams about a boy named Peter Schiffwith whom she was in love. She sometimes even getsthe two Peters confused in her head.

She comes to like Peter (of the Annex) more andmore. She finds him sensitive and caring. They pass alot of time together and there is talk about everything, including sex. Eventually, their relationship developsinto deep friendship and a source of comfort for bothof them.

Another big change for Anne happens when the warseems to be ending. She is told that personal accountssuch as her diary will be in demand after the war ends. There is a return to her earlier optimism as she begins editing her diary with greater vigour.

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL 5FOR FIRST & SECOND TERM–X

Unfortunately, this does not last long. Even as Anne becomes more and more sensitive to the

suffering going on in the world, her own suffering becomes unbearable. She feels herself completely

alone. She thinks everyone hates her. She feels that she is constantly criticized from which there is no

escape. At one point, she thinks it might have been better if she and her family, instead of hiding in

the Annex, had all died. Her bitterness leads her to become harder on those around her and also on

herself. She berates herself for being mean to the other members of the Annex. There, her diary ends.

Two days after her last diary entry, the Secret Annex is raided. We don’t know Anne’s thoughts or

feelings at that point or any time after that, but we do know that things got worse.

Anne and the other members of the Secret Annex are sent to various concentration camps and after

that nothing is known about them. Anne’s father, Otto Frank, is the sole survivor.

July 8, 1942 (Wednesday) : Anne describes the events that have transpired since her conversationwith her father. She says that very afternoon (of 5 July) a member of their family receives ‘the call-up’from the SS (Social Security Department). It is a clear indication that the one who has been called up

would be sent away to a concentration camp. Mrs Frank goes to talk to the Van Daans who are alsogoing into hiding with the Franks. Anne and Margot stay in the house, not answering the doorbell, and waiting for their dad to get home. Margot tells Anne that the call-up was for her (Margot) and

not for their dad. They start packing their things. That night, the family sends clothes and books withMiep Gies (a Dutch woman business partner) and Jan Gies (her husband) to take them to the secrethiding spot. Since it’s dangerous for Jews to be seen with suitcases, the next day the Franks dress in

three layers of clothing before heading out. Margot goes first with Miep Gies in the early morning, and Anne with her parents following later in the day.
