    Smiling Soul Ventures operate into multiple domains including

    consultancy, education services, training and trading of chemicals

    and dry-fruits. The present case-study pertains to the dry-fruitsegment of their business.

    With the festive season coming near, especially Diwali, the dry-fruit

    trading segment of Smiling Soul Ventures was into full swing. The

    last 3 years hadnt been the best as they were not able to generate

    enough sales. Rihaan, the charismatic Chairman heading the dry-

    fruit division was a bit worried. The margins were shrinking and the

    sales were not picking up. He had received an ultimatum from thegroup head that if the business didnt generate profit this year, the

    group would shut-down the division. Rihaan was in love with the dry-

    fruit business and did not want it to slip away.

    About the Dry Fruity Business

    SSV Dry Fruitsprocures the worlds finest dry-fruits from across the

    globe, sorts and packages it and supplies to retail and corporate

    clients in India. Their main products were:

    Almonds2 varietiesStandard and Premium

    Pistachios2 varietiesCholesterol-free (with shell) and without

    shell

    RaisinsStandard and Premium

    CashewsPlainStandard, Premium and Exotic

    Salted - Standard

    The philosophy was to offer the worlds finest dry-fruits at reasonable

    prices to the common man of the country. Though the philosophy was

    noble, there was plenty of competition in the market which made it

    difficult to achieve sales growth. In their bid to boost sales, SSV also

    went online and standard selling their products through sites like e-

    bay, rediff shopping etc. But the margins were eroded due todependence on third party services. Subsequently, they started their

    E-commerce website but the cost of the site far exceeded the benefits.

    Sales didnt pick up. Rihaan was worried how to reach the masses

    and convince them to purchase what he had to offer.

    Major Concerns

    1. The value proposition offered by SSV Dry Fruits is not unique

    2. No pre-defined channel for retail and corporate clients

    3. Inability of achieve sales

    Deliverables:

    The participants need to put themselves in Rihaansshoes and think

    of innovative and practical solutions to boost sales.

    Please note that the ideas suggested should be practical to

    implement as the shortlisted teams will have to implement a few of

    their own ideas and show a positive response to them.

    The competition will be held in 2 rounds the details of which are asfollows:

    i. Round 1The team needs to submit a PowerPoint Presentation

    highlighting your innovative opinions, business solutions and growth

    strategy for the company and a report (not exceeding 1000 words)

    giving a brief on the ideas/solutions provided in the presentation.

    The deliverables (to be namedBusiness Baazigara_Team

    Name_College/Organisation Name) are to be mailed on to

    [email protected] [email protected] with

    subject lineBusiness Baazigar latest by September 13, 2014 end of

    day.

    ii. Round 2 - Top solutions in Round 1, as judged by the eminent

    panel of judges will be shortlisted for the second round.

    The second round will require the teams to actually implement the

    solutions/strategies suggested in their submission for round 1.MBAWizards.com will provide all the necessary support/details

    required for the shortlisted teams to ensure that they are able to

    implement the strategies.

    The participants will have to submit a report detailing the

    success/failure of the strategies and difficulties faced along with

    improvements in the form of a report.

    The presentation, report or any deliverable should not be a work of

    plagiarism and should be an original work of the participant. Entries

    found to be copied from somewhere will be immediately disqualified.

    Any reference to any source must be clearly mentioned.

    Winners and runners-up will receive:

    Gift vouchers and cash prizes worth Rs. 25,000/- to the winningteam and worth Rs. 15,000/- to the runners up.
