West Africa,~947.Thirty-three years ago, when Delta Line pioneered

regular U.S. Flag service from the Gulf to West Africa, there were few developed harbors along the entire3,000-mile coastline from Dakar to Matadi.

Each voyage was an adventure. Our ships wouldsail along the coast and anchor just beyond the surf.Cargoes were loaded onto small boats powered bymen and oars. It was a demanding test of skill andseamanship, an experience not soon forgotten by thecrews of those Delta ships.

Delta helped establish trade with the nations ofWest Africa, and continues to play a vital role in theeconomic development of the region.

Today, we serve the modern ports of West Africawith five purpose-built vessels, that sail frequentlyfrom all major U.S. Gulf ports. These great shipsare backed by an experienced team at home, and anetwork of the best agents on the African continent.

And it’s the same wherever we go in the world-South America, Central America, the Caribbean. In50 countries, on three continents, Delta is committedto service, integrity and excellence.

Dollar impact of U.S.-flag fleet detailedAn updated, input-output, economic

analysis of America’s maritime in-dustries just released by the CommerceDepartment’s Maritime Administrationindicates that each do|Mr in sales by theU.S. merchant marine adds an-other $3.81 to the national economy.

The study, "Economic Impact of theMaritime Industries on the U.S.Economy 1971-78 (An InterindustryAnalysis)," was prepared by H.C.Chung, professor of economics at theUniversity of Bridgeport, Bridgeport,Conn. It reports that the chain of pur-chases begun by the maritime activitiesof the U.S.-flag merchant fleet has acumulative "multiplier effect" of 4.811throughout the economy. This meansthat each dollar in merchant fleet salesultimately generates a total of $4.81 insales and other business activity.

It should be noted that the dollaramounts used in the study were express-ed in terms of 1972 dollars. In 1979dollars (adjusted for inflation) thefigures would be 50 percent higher.

He had been manager logistics forIncotrans since 1974 and has heldnumerous managerial positions withshipping agency companies in Holland.

Mr. Van Dijk replaced B.C. vanNes, who has been appointed generalmanager of South Atlantic/U.S. Gulf& Mexico (Atlantic) Services in In-cotrans.

U.S. shipping industry, Professor Chungfound that the $1.5 billion in merchantfleet sales reported in 1972 induced near-ly $7.5 billion worth of business activityin the nation’s economy. Similarmultiplier effects increased the Americanshipping industry’s contribution to theGross National Product of the same yearto $3.5 billion.

The multiplier for the American

shipbuilding industry in 1972 was 4.701,thus the $2.8 billion government andbusiness invested in shipbuilding servicesin 1972 had a $13.3 billion impact on theentire economy.
