Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) challenges learners to

HIGHLIGHTS 2017-2018

I. Position MCTC as the accessible, affordable, and relevant postsecondary education choice for our constituents to raise the level of educational attainment in our communities.

The 49th annual commencement ceremonies were held in Maysville, Cynthiana and Mt. Sterling. MCTC awarded 399 associate degrees, 1206 certificates and 190 diplomas to 728 completers during the 2017-2018 academic year.

II. Increase access and success for all MCTC students, particularly among traditionally underserved populations.

On Saturday, December 9, 2017, the Montgomery County Black Achievers program visited the MC for a College/Career Fair with 13 MCTC programs present and 29 students in attendance.

MCTC enrolled 389 high school graduating seniors the fall semester following graduation.

The College coordinated 24 business and industry/community recruiting visits, primarily targeting Spring 2018 enrollment.

Forty-five people attended the annual Super Sunday event held on Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Bethel Baptist Church in Maysville.

Melanie Hill, a student in MCTC’s Ready to Work program, was featured in the KCTCS Spotlight this year. Melanie received her Associate degree from MCTC, completed her Business Administration bachelor’s degree at MSU and is currently pursuing her MBA through MSU.

On Thursday, March 29, 2018, Super Someday was held on the MYC in collaboration with Mason County High School with 38 minority students in attendance.

MCTC successfully submitted the Skills U/Adult Education grant proposal and was funded for Bracken, Fleming, Harrison, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Robertson counties.

MCTC attended 23 high school sporting events at 11 of our 16 service region schools.

A total of 67 students representing all seven of MCTC’s Skills U program counties/centers at Bracken, Fleming, Harrison, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, and Robertson earned the GED.

MCTC’s Ready to Work program ranked 2nd across the system in total number of students (194) served. Funding was increased by $120,000 to allow for the program to serve more students through employment skills training.

MCTC hosted an enrollment event with GED graduates at the LVC and MYC in fall 2017 to help students transition into college.

Skills U/Adult Education recognized Mason County as one of 25 Programs of Excellence for the state.

III. Develop clear pathways through all levels of postsecondary education with an emphasis on experiential learning that lead to successful employment outcomes for MCTC graduates.

MCTC hosted the Spring Transfer Fair in March 2018 with 10 transfer institutions in attendance: Campbellsville Online, EKU, Indiana Wesleyan University, Lindsay Wilson University, Midway University, Morehead State University, Northern Kentucky University, Shawnee State University, Sullivan University and the University of Kentucky.

Chef Patrick Zemba organized a trip to Europe for culinary students and community members.

The College hosted over 700 8th grade students at the MYC, LVC and RC for 8th Grade Days.

The MYC hosted over 600 students from Straub Elementary (K, 1st and 2nd) for tours and fun information sessions with faculty and staff.

The 25th Annual Regional Science Olympiad was held on Saturday, March 24, 2018, on

the MYC. Events began at 9 a.m. through 3 p.m. with St. Patrick School, Mason County, Greenup County, Morgan County, The Craft Academy, St Henry School, Boyd County, and Russell Independent Schools participating in the event.

MCTC student Austin Blythe, who serves as the KY FAME student ambassador, visited Rep. John Sims Jr. and Rep. David Hale at the Capitol to speak with them about the benefits of the @KyFameAMT earn while you work and learn apprenticeship program.

The Culinary Arts Practicum class hosted a Date Night on February 16, 2018, for 80 happy customers.

The Center for Career Development and Experiential Learning served 251 students, alumni, and community members during the academic year and 100 job referrals were made to students, alumni, and community members. One hundred fifty students explored career options and 60 students earned the Skills Certificates from Am I Job Ready which indicates they are better aligned to the skills needed for success in the workplace.

IV. Improve student engagement, support, experiences, and success.

MCTC was selected to represent KCTCS in the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) study regarding food insecurity and other basic student needs. The U.S. GAO research was prompted by a Congressional request from U.S. Senators: Patty Murray (Senate HELP Committee), Debbie Stabenow (Senate Agriculture Committee), Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey. GAO Senior Analysts, Nora Boretti and Stephen Yoder, collected data on strategies used by selected states and colleges to address these issues in college student populations. Kentucky will be featured as one of four state case studies to be included in the final report to the United States Congress in 2018-19.

MCTC hosted the 3rd annual Free Scholarship Shootout at the Boys and Girls 10th

Region Basketball Tournament. Winners were Sam Keiser, Skie French, Cari Linville, Caden Vanhoose, Hannah Gallenstein, Chandler Dunaway, Hadley Price, Chase Stafford, Kara Maron, Spencer Morris, Christy Adams and Tanner Hodge.

MCTC’s 2018 All-Academic Team members were Justin Shutt, Automotive Technology

and Jessica Beil, Associate in Arts. Students from each of the 16 KCTCS colleges were chosen based on a rigorous selection process that focuses on academic performance and community service.

The Student Support Services (SSS) grant serves students who are low income, first

generation and/or students with disabilities who have significant academic need and received a 4.25% increase in funding after eight years of level funding.

A total of 97 student activities were held in 2017-2018 including the Back to School Bash

and Spring Fling.

The College hosted 15 high school on-site registration events and registered 266 seniors

in March/April before they graduated high school.

The 9th Annual Farm and Family Night was held on the MYC in March 2018 with approximately 1000 participants enjoying sessions, workshops, and exhibitor booths.

The SSS grant reached an all-time high 86% retention rate with 89% of students earning

Good Academic Standing.

Congratulations to MCTC’s Elizabeth Graves for having the most votes (2,411) in the KCTCS video contest! She received a new laptop and a $100 Dell gift card for her accomplishment.

Librarian Carla Redden and Director of Library Services Sonja Eads embedded library instruction material, “Ask-A-Librarian” library information, and their contact information in Blackboard for 48 classes in the fall semester and 50 classes in the spring. The librarians selected Credo InfoLit Modules to provide content as well as usage and assessment reporting of information literacy instruction for 2017-2018. During the fall semester the librarians provided 25 sessions with 542 students; provided 21 sessions in the spring semester with 534 students. Sessions included face-to-face and online.

There were many events and happenings that took place in the in the Library/Academic Commons including:

“Geeks Speak,” a group of faculty, staff, and students interested in pop culture, participated in discussions in October and November,

For Halloween, and to coincide with the October discussion of “The Walking Dead (TWD)”, the MYC library had a TWD display and set up a photo booth area to take selfies and post to the library Facebook page,

Eat and Enroll with Pizza, Student Appreciation Popcorn Days, and Straub Days when multiple readers read to K-2nd graders March 5-7, 2018, and approximately 600 students heard stories read aloud.

The Maysville Institute of Culinary Arts offered a variety of culinary classes to the

community with 62 participants in attendance.

Chef Ann Flora offered a Harry Potter themed summer culinary camp for 19 area children.

MCTC Kids’ College programs for ages 5-13 served more than 260 children at the MYC, LVC, and MC.

The 3rd annual Project Malaria 5K Run + Walk took place in downtown Maysville in August 2016. The proceeds from this event benefited impoverished communities in Uganda.

Eighty-eight children participated in Career Craze. This three-day camp for middle school aged children teaches such things as the benefits of education and jobs and career opportunities in our area.

V. Align programs and curricula with needs of employers that enhance the employability, job placement, and career development of MCTC graduates. MCTC’s Practical Nursing to Registered Nursing online program began in May 2017 and

its first graduates had a 100% pass rate on the state board exam.

The Air Conditioning Technology program at the MC began offering ACR 200/201 and ACR 210 to allow students to gain the Refrigeration Mechanic Certification and placed two walk-in refrigeration units in the lab as a teaching tool for this certificate.

MCTC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Team worked to develop the QEP proposal Let’s Solve It: Problem-Solving Skills for Life. Professional development was offered by Tennessee Tech University trainers in spring 2018 to help faculty work with students to improve problem-solving skills.

MCTC’s Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program was awarded official

accreditation by the National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences

(NAACLS) Board of Directors. The program, which began in 2013 prepares students for a

career as a Medical Lab Technician.

The Construction Technology program finished and sold the three bedroom, two bath

student project house in spring 2018. Over the course of two years, nearly 120 students

worked on the house to see it through to completion.

Plans are underway to begin an Associate Degree Nursing program at the MC.

LVC’s Associate Degree Nursing program had a 100% pass rate on the state board exam for the 4th year in a row.

Practical Nursing programs had a100% pass rate on the state board exam at MYC and RC.

Culinary Arts students had 100% pass rates on four National Restaurant Association certification exams in cooking, baking, human relations management, and cost and control.

Brandin Perkins, Professor/Coordinator, Electrical Technology, recently earned the FANUC Factory Certified Instructor status from the FANUC Robotics’ CERT Program. Through this certification, MCTC can now offer two levels of FANUC certifications to students who complete Mr. Perkins’ Robotics and Industrial Automation course.

The Electrical Technology program purchased the LabVolt 2kW Motor/Generator Trainer and the program is one of only two colleges in Kentucky to have this trainer.

MCTC’s Workforce Solutions department provided services to a number of communities

and individuals including:

o Implemented KY FAME at the MC with 12 students in the cohort,

o Served 196 companies,

o Served 402 students through workforce credit courses and 1,465 individuals

through community education courses,

o Administered 2,081 workforce assessments and 252 adult education

assessments through the Assessment Center, and

o Provided 46 students with Lineman training.

The MYC renovated the welding lab with 18 booths, tinted windows, an air filtration

system, duct work and manifold system for gases. Pipe welding was implemented for the

first time at the MYC.

VI. Secure and maintain physical, financial, and human resources to advance the mission of MCTC.

To mark the grand opening of the RC at the MMRC Industrial Park in Morehead, Kentucky, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Friday, January 26, 2018. Local and state officials, faculty, staff, students, community members and those who had a hand in the creation of the new facility attended the ceremony.

MCTC’s website was completely revamped along with all KCTCS college websites.

MCTC implemented a Bottom Up Budgeting process and an extensive professional development plan for employees.

The Academic Commons for the LVC was completed fall 2017. The project included an enlarged tutoring area and added access to Student Success coaches and faculty tutoring. An Open House was held November 29, 2017, to celebrate the completion of the project.

Missy Bishop, Dr. Dana Calland, Valerie Mullins, and Angie Potter attended the KCTCS Advising Academy. The group will assist in the development of a new advising model that will incorporate career services.

In spring 2018, the College dedicated the Student Commons at the new RC to Chief Operations Officer and Rowan Campus Director, Russ Ward! Russ played a pivotal role in the planning and construction of the new facility!

Dr. Rhonda Sims, Nursing Professor, was nominated and chosen by Midway University Administration for their 2018 Distinguished Alumni Nursing award. Dr. Sims received the award in April 2018 at a formal recognition event held on the university’s campus.

MCTC and the MCTC Foundation secured and administered $3,218,443 in federal, state and private foundation grant funds.

The Automotive Technology Program purchased a New Hunter Alignment machine,

Alignment Rack and a Hunter Tire changer for the new automotive shop scheduled to open fall 2019 in the new Phase II RC building.

MCTC honored our benefactors with an Appreciation Brunch at the Prizing House in Cynthiana. The Burnett Family Charitable Trust and the City of Cynthiana received recognition awards for their contributions.

The fall 2017 economic study conducted by Emsi shows Maysville Community & Technical College has a $71.4 million impact on the region’s economy. Emsi, a CareerBuilder company, is a leading provider of economic impact studies and labor market data to educational institutions, workforce planners, and regional developers in the U.S. and internationally.

Phase two construction began in June 2018 at the MMRC industrial Park. The new facility will house the high-bay industrial technology programs (Air Conditioning, Automotive, Construction, Diesel, and Welding) currently located at the Viking Drive Campus.

MCTC’s 17th annual Fall Kick-Off was held on the MYC and RC with more than 100 employees in attendance. The Fall Kick-Off is a professional development event for both full-time and part-time faculty members.

In preparation for the 2018-2019 implementation of the new library management system, Alma by Ex Libris, Sonja Eads, Director of Library Services, co-chaired the Resource Sharing Committee of the KCTCS Library Services and Resources Peer Team (LSRPT) that lead a thorough analysis of all the e-resources provided by the libraries while Carla Redden, Librarian, began working on the KCTCS implementation team for the new system.

Dr. Dana Calland served on a Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges on-site team visit in October 2017. Responsibilities included participation in team conference calls, interviewing faculty, staff and students during the visit and writing recommendations if needed. The visit served as excellent professional development for preparation for the upcoming MCTC reaffirmation visit.

Matthew Porter, Welding Instructor, attended and completed the Leading Educator Academy (LEA) training held at Kentucky Lake State Park. The LEA is designed to grow and develop new faculty by applying innovative instructional strategies through an intensive performance based workshop.

Jennifer Adler and Justin Weiss received a grant that gives the College a rare opportunity

to teach a 1 credit hour, one-week laboratory field class in May called “Forest Ecology and Climate Change.” The Lilley Cornett Woods in the Appalachians of Letcher County Kentucky is the site for this student experience.

The MCTC Foundation received the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) fundraising award for overall improvement. The Foundation raised $217,375.19 for the fiscal year 2018.

VII. Provide a safe and secure college environment.

MCTC’s Safety and Security Team became members of the Regional Sexual Assault Interagency Council.

The College provided active shooter classes and lock down drill practices on each campus.

Eight Self Defense classes and three Kids’ College safety classes were provided.

Evaluation teams on each campus discussed and assessed the practice drills conducted

for tornado, fire and lockdown to improve upon future practice drills.
