I don’t claim first page very often
– it’s usually reserved for the pastor
but I wanted to share pics of Pastor
Jeff’s first Sunday. Forgive my claiming
this page.
Steve, I in no means want to
exclude you from this page, but I wanted this to represent Pastor Jeff’s
first service only. A day he was
anxious about, as we’re sure Patty,
Glenn, and Leo were also. A day in
front of a bunch of people who
believe in not judging but you know
probably were, even if just a little bit.
A day for you, Jeff, in a very hot
building with no air conditioning,
where you were determined to be
“professional” and keep on your suit
jacket, but no robe in 90-degree heat!
Things said in “my” office usually stay in my office, but you called it:
Steve was in a suit with a bowtie!
Looking good, Steve!!
Let’s share some pics!/ed.

As we begin a new era at Maynard
saying goodbye to Pastor Patricia and
Rose and welcoming Pastor Jeff and
Steve, this article in the United Methodist
NOW newsletter caught my eye. Maybe
it will help answer some of your
questions about this change./Ed.
Why do United Methodist
pastors change churches?
Our unique system of
deploying clergy has its roots in
the earliest days of Methodism.
John Wesley, the founder of the
Methodist movement, preached up
to 40,000 sermons in his lifetime.
He was an “itinerant” preacher,
traveling from town to town in
England, setting up Methodist
societies.
“John Wesley believed that
itinerant preachers who moved
from place to place were more
effective than those who settled in, grew comfortable, and wore out
what they had to say,” says
the Rev. Belton Joyner.
In a letter to the Rev. Samuel
Walker in 1756, Wesley wrote,
“We have found by long and
consistent experience that a
frequent exchange of preachers is
best. This preacher has one
talent, that another; no one whom
I ever yet knew has all the talents
which are needful for beginning,
continuing, and perfecting the
work of grace in a whole
congregation.”
In the early days of Methodism
in America, a pastor — most often
a circuit rider — might be
appointed to half of a state or
Why Do Our Pastors Change Churches?
more. His appointment might be
for only three months, after which
he moved to another circuit.
Thousands of the oldest United
Methodist congregations today
trace their history to a circuit
rider.
This traveling from place to
place to begin Methodist societies
was adapted for the Methodist
congregations many of these early
societies would become after the
establishment of the Methodist
Episcopal Church in 1784. It thus
became the basis of the itinerant system The United Methodist
Church uses today.
United Methodist pastors are
sent, not called or hired.
“Itinerancy” refers specifically to
the commitment by pastors to go
and serve wherever their bishops
send them. “Appointment” is the
action taken by bishops. These are
different, yet related.
Clergy in The United Methodist
Church commit to serve where
their bishop appoints them.
Appointments are typically for one
year at a time, though the bishop
may move any itinerant pastor at
any time. The goal of the
appointment process is to match as
much as possible the gifts and
graces of the particular pastor or
deacon with the ministry needs of
a particular congregation or
ministry setting. In this “serial
leadership” of consecutive pastors
and deacons — no two are alike —
over time, the combination of skills
Glenn — our past
Patty — our present
(at this writing)
Jeff — our future
All three make moves
to new church homes
on July 1. Keep them
in your prayers for a
sense of welcome and
that all will be well!

blends to form a broad base of
developed ministries.
While bishops make
appointments, they incorporate a
consultative process outlined in The
Book of Discipline that includes
district superintendents, clergy and
pastor/staff parish relations
committees (at Maynard: SPRC).
The needs and desires of clergy are
considered, but the mission of the
church comes first.
Joyner explains, “In a
connectional system such as United
Methodism, the question from any individual congregation or from any
individual [clergy] is not, ‘What is
best for me?’ The question is
‘What is best for us, the whole
connection?’ The one who has
oversight, the bishop, makes those
decisions. (The New Testament
word for bishop is episkopos, which
Why Do Our Pastors Change Churches? (cont’d)
means ‘the one who can see the
whole picture.’)
“The changing of pastors brings
different and often-needed gifts to
the local church (1 Cor. 12:4). The
changing of settings can keep a
pastor refreshed. The missionary
journeys of Paul are surely a
reminder of that, for example, Acts
13:2-14:7; 15:36-18:22; 18:23-
21:19.”

Baptism of Bentlee Joseph Barnett!
June 17, 2018—Father’s Day
Pastor Patricia and Ret. Rev. Merv Matteson baptized Bentlee. Patty made it all the way
around the sanctuary with no tears—from either of them! Congratulations, Bentlee!

Maynard again had a presence
at the Pride Parade and
Community Festival. What a joy
to show the LGBTQ community
the love of Christ. We hope each
year that more will feel the love
that is theirs for the asking, theirs
for the believing, theirs for the
taking. The Grace of God is theirs
because he loves each and
everyone of them. Everyone made
in his image—some way, some
how. You are loved!!!.
Pride Weekend 2018!
Look who we found? Or did
they find us? Pastor Jeff Mullinix,
his daughter, and spouse Steve
Shamblin-Mullinix found Maynard
at the parade and joined in the
march—a great addition to our
spot in the parade.

Since I have only had to
complete one bulletin without
Patty’s input so far, it feels like she
is just on vacation (remember hers
and Rose’s trip to Viet Nam?) and
Pastor Jeff is filling in.
But, alas and alack, we know
that is not the case. Never a
farewell or goodbye, just an adieu,
till we meet again. Have a great
adventure at Maple Grove UMC,
Patty and Rose. All will be well at
your new home and church home!
We will all be making new friends
Not Farewell but Adieu, Patty and Rose
and blessing the gift of old friends at
the same time. God is keeping us all
in his loving arms, offering comfort
for the changes and challenges that
have been and those yet to come!
After 12 years, is a simple “thank
you” enough? But it’s all we have to
offer—thank you for all of your gifts
God asked you to bestow upon us at
Maynard!!

What great fun the children
had in Vacation Bible School as
they dug in the sand for relics
(created by Michael Lindner and Jay
Reyes), drew old symbols on
scrolls, learned new songs to sing
in worship on Sunday, and of
course, heard Bible stories.
As you can see by the pictures,
the “archeologists” had a great
time. Thank you, Connie Bloor,
for obtaining matching shirts for
this group.
Hope Pierce shows us the relic
he found! Although it looks like only a few
are paying attention to what Patty
is teaching them, don't let them
fool you — they all did a great job
on Sunday in worship!
Connie, start planning now —
I think they are anxious to attend

Psalm 121: A Prayer for Travelers
Whether traveling overseas or
around the corner, starting a new
job or a new family, we embark on
all kinds of journeys. Life itself can
be a long and winding road, but as
Christians, a life dedicated to God
is not one defined by standing still,
and our faith assures us that we
will never travel that road alone.
Titled A Song of Ascents in
Scripture, Psalm 121 marks life’s
journeys. The sacred song is
believed to have been sung by
pilgrims traveling the ancient road
to Jerusalem but, over the ages, has become known to many by a more
familiar name: The Traveler’s Psalm.
The words serve as a guide for the
journey and a reminder God is
watching over us every step of the
way.
You are encouraged to use this
video meditation as a source of
comfort as you commence,
continue, or conclude your
journey. This short segment is
easy to share or download and can
be used in a wide variety of church
settings, such as before or during
worship, in Sunday school classes,
or in small groups.
The images in this video were
taken by photographers from
various United Methodist
conferences and agencies.

Psalm 121 A song of ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to
the mountains—
where does my help
come from? 2 My help comes from
the LORD, the Maker
of heaven and earth. 3 He will not let your
foot slip—he who
watches over you will
not slumber; 4 indeed,
he who watches over
Israel will neither
slumber nor sleep. 5 The LORD watches
over you—the LORD

Love One Another Ministry
(LOAM) is a group from Maynard
and the community who visit the
homeless living in encampment(s).
Mary Wilbur heads this group of
caring, supportive individuals and
is the contact person for those in
the encampments. If they are in
need of food, prayers, heat, just
someone to talk to, they call Mary.
She can then spread the word to
others.
Speak with Mary after worship
any Sunday if you are interested in
being a part of this outreach or if you have something to donate to
the homeless. \
Mary and others visit the
encampment on the third Sunday
of each month at 4 p.m. Help is
always needed to distribute items.
Here is what they collect
throughout the year:
SOCKS;
“C” and “D” BATTERIES
WET ONES or BABY
WIPES;
CANNED GOODS – easy
open cans of tuna, Vienna
sausage,
any canned meat, soups,
vegetables, and fruits
INSTANT COFFEE;
CANDLES (used or new);
LONG JOHNS;
HEATERS and PROPANE
for warmth and cooking
food; *
UMBRELLAS that fold
small would be appreciated
and/or PONCHOS;
Love One Another Ministry (LOAM) Outreach
TINS (cookie or popcorn)
help keep food fresh in damp
weather and safe from
animals.
* Do not be concerned about
contributing to the purchase
of — or purchasing yourself
— propane and/or propane
heaters. These are not fire
hazards as they have auto
shutoff valves if knocked
over. They are needed not
only for heat in the winter
but for cooking all year long.
Candles are really the
problem as they are easily
knocked over or touched
inadvertently. But they are
needed to see in the evening
and night hours. Candles in
jars or have stable, flat
bottoms are safer.

Graduates 2018: Holly Babcock and Grace Hannah
As your classes and grading are now
complete, may you strive toward
excellence in all you do. As the speeches conclude, may your
voices rise up to pronounce justice
and peace in the world. As the fanfares cease, may you sing of
joy, even in the dark and lonely
places. As the applause quiets, may you
celebrate and lift up those around
you. As you graduate, may your
achievements grow and cause
growth in your communities.
A Prayer for Our Graduates: Holly and Grace
And may we all know of the
overwhelming blessings of the One
who created all things.
Congratulations to Holly
Babcock who graduated with a
nursing degree and passed her
boards! And has a job!!!!
Congratulations to Grace
Hannah who graduated from
West Jefferson High School and
will be attending Columbus State
before heading to Columbus
School of Art and Design.
NewsNet, May 30, 2018
If you didn’t have a chance to meet Holly Babcock when she
had a few spare minutes from studies to attend Maynard, I’m sure
you know her “famous” uncle, our own Bryan. Bryan is proud of
all his nieces and nephews and Holly is one of many and it is her
time to experience his pride. Their smiles say it all!
Congratulations!! Much luck as you begin your career in nursing!
Grace Hannah is a high school graduate just starting out on
whatever she decides to do. A great artist puts her opportunities
and schools to help her fine-tune her craft. Grace, your grandma
(Connie Hammond), along with Maynard, are very proud of you!
Congratulations!

in February 2019, Bishop Palmer
encourages all West Ohio United
Methodists to participate daily in
Praying Our Way Forward, from 2:23
-2:26 (a.m. or p.m.), and to
participate in weekly fasting.
Here is a suggested prayer that
you can begin to pray:
“Christ be with me, Christ
within me, Christ behind me,
Praying Our Way Forward
Christ before me, Christ beside
me, Christ to win me; Christ to
comfort and restore me; Christ
beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love
me, Christ in mouth of friend and
stranger. “

The West Ohio Annual
Conference of the United
Methodist Church held its
49th session June 3 thru 6,
2018, at Lakeside, OH.
Attending this year from
Maynard Avenue UMC
were Pastor Patricia, Maria
Bernal, Rose Wagner, and
Leo Soboslai.
As usual, there were the
budget to approve, reports
to be heard, and other
annual conference business
to tend to. We also lit candles to remember
pastors and spouses that we
lost this year. A candle was
lit for Ruby Jones, who was
the spouse to Rev. Evan
Jones who served at
Maynard from 1970 to
1979. We celebrated
pastors retiring and pastors
being commissioned to
serve as deacons, elders,
another positions.
Worship services are
always amazing. We heard
from the Scioto Ridge Boys
Quartet, as well as the
Annual Conference Choir.
Great sermons were
offered by our very own
Bishop Gregory Palmer, as
well as Dr. Zan Holmes and
Rev. Louise (Lou) Seipel.
The theme for the conference
gathering was Be Not Afraid,
There Is Enough. This is based
on the scriptures about the
feeding of the 5000, teaching us
how we are to trust God that
2018 Annual Conference: Be Not Afraid, There Is Enough
there is enough even when we
don’t think there is.
Light the Way campaign, which
started last year, is still in motion ...
the monies raised help new church
start-ups across the conference.
Maynard made the contribution
of over $100! Thank you for your
generosity!
At conference, a 5K run helped
raise over $9,000! And at the
conference level, the totals are
now well past the $2.1 million
mark!! Amen!
Recommendation 6 was before the conference asking that we
support the immigrants among us
by offering material, legal, and
spiritual services. We also are to
provide sanctuary to individuals
and families to those seeking legal
solutions, and to keep families
together. All things asked of us in
these situations are law-abiding
acts. This recommendation
passed!! Thank you, West Ohio!!
For more details on this
recommendation, visit the website
for the West Ohio Conference.
Thank you, Maynardites, for
helping with the cost of the
housing for the representatives.
We stayed once again at the
cottage on Lynn Ave. It’s quaint,
has three bedrooms, and nice
amenities! We always encourage
others to come and visit … for an
afternoon, or plan to stay over …
we will make room!
Come and experience Annual

experience Lakeside!
